Polygon Pictures' Godzilla anime film will stream globally on the Netflix service this year.

The Japanese arm of the world's largest online streaming service will collaborating with TOHO, Japan's largest film distributor, on the coordinated theatrical and global streaming release. The film will have a stage event at AnimeJapan 2017 on Sunday, March 26. The six main voice actors will appear at the event.

Kobun Shizuno (Detective Conan: The Darkest Nightmare and other Detective Conan movies, Fist of the North Star: The Legend of Kenshirô, Fist of the North Star: The Legend of Toki) and Hiroyuki Seshita (Ajin, Knights of Sidonia) are directing the film at Polygon Pictures. Gen Urobuchi (Puella Magi Madoka Magica, Fate/Zero, Psycho-Pass) of Nitroplus is credited with the story concept and screenplay.

The film is the first anime film in the Godzilla franchise.

The new era for Monster movies keeps on going.

Do we know if this movie is CG or not?

Silly question.

Has there ever been a Godzilla anime?

I don't think so, though there was an American cartoon that was a sequel to the '98 movie (and from what I remember was pretty good, but I would've been like 10 at the time so who knows).

Surprisingly, no. There was a kids oriented live action program ages ago, but those were less than 10 minutes long a piece. Animated Godzilla has been limited to the ultra terrible Hanna-Barbera series and the surprisingly decent spinoff from the 98 film.

Actually, there was a great animated TV show based on Godzilla 98 :

It's not Mama Zilla we see in the movie, but a series about her offspring we see during the teaser at the end of the movie.

It's great ; it deals with a lot of other MUTOs and it's kinda light-hearted.

I would love it if they give a nod to the American cartoon. I want to see Nigel get destroyed one more time.

I wish all the Godzilla movies were on Netflix.

Especially all the older ones.

Considering the rights for Godzilla movies seem to be kind of all over the place, I don't think this will ever happen. I'm still waiting for the rest of the Showa era to get bluray releases :(

All the old TOHO Godzilla vs. ____ movies were so awesome.

I scan Netflix and Prime Video every so often seeing if they got picked up, but they never do.

You can buy them on BD, but I'd rather stream 'em.

a lot of those 60s and 70s versus movies actually aren't on bluray yet :( it really sucks because we're like 6 or 7 movies away from having the entire Godzilla franchise available on a single medium

Zilla is a really good design and I'm glad he's been integrated into Godzilla's cast of monsters.

A bunch of them used to be on some combination of Netflix, Hulu, and Prime, but have since been taken down.

Love that series.

Likely means there'll be more art.

Ready to have my heart broken that it probably won't be as immediately evocative and interesting as this piece of fanart that was mistakenly attributed as official.

I consider DVD and Blu-ray to be the same medium for collection purposes. So except for Godzilla 1985 every single Godzilla film is on disc.

Well, unless you're looking specifically for the American version of Godzilla 1985 (which is never going to happen) that movie did get a DVD/BluRay release

There was also that godawful western Godzilla: The Series, which was based on the Roland Emmerich movie.

As others have already pointed out - the cartoon based off the Emmerich movie was actually good and way better than the movie it was based on. Even Toho was totally fine with that cartoon

1985 is the American version. Returns/1984 is the Japanese version. I want the Raymond Burr version on Blu-ray but that can't happen because of the music they used in the film.

Yeah, that version is never seeing another release because the rights situation for that movie is a complete fucking mess that nobody wants to sort out. I'm honestly ok with it because, while I appreciate that they tried to make this movie a sequel to the US version of Gojira, I think Return of Godzilla is the superior version. Burr's character in 1985 is pessimistic to the point where he seems like he's straight up rooting for Godzilla. Plus the US version redoes the Russian missile situation in order to make the Russian's look like they try to nuke Tokyo because it was the Cold War

God damn do I love Burr's voice.

I'm talking about the TOHO Godzilla Collections:

I don't think they're actually HD. Just two-packs of movies on 1 disc.

I have them.

-They are HD. The transfers are generally ok imo
-They are 2 films on 2 Blu-rays. Not sure where you're getting the 2-in-1 from, it even says 2 discs in the specs.

Maybe I should take a look at it again, But I remember not liking it at all, despite having some decent (for the time) animation.

To be honest, I kinda liked Godzilla 1998. It was not a good movie, far from it. But I liked the cheesiness of it.

My opinion of the 98 Godzilla movie is that it's an okay monster movie, and is a bad Godzilla movie that mostly misses the point about Godzilla

To be fair, most Godzilla movies miss the (original) point of Godzilla

A horror movie about a living allegory of the nuclear bomb and the anguish and dread that comes with that force looming over them.

A Godzilla 1985 Blu-ray would be sick. I grew up with the dub, and really like Burr in it. Guess I'll have to be content with my Hong Kong bootleg of it.

Man, if I had my old VHS tape, I doubt it would even work lol. I ran that shit into the ground.
