The Switch Protection Thread

Has a solution or product been made that will allow a skin protector on the Switch? I know that it wasn't working before due to the skin protector peeling off the coating of the Switch or something like that.
I don't think it will ever happen, the switch and joy cons are coated with something to make the plastic feel soft. that coating interacts with pretty much any adhesive according to the dbrand guy.

Dang. Oh well, I'll just have to be gentle with the Switch!

Thanks for also answering the last time a while ago by the way! I accidentally closed my response from before so it never sent but I had never noticed until recently!

no problem :)

here is where dbrand confirm that it's any skin, btw.
As you can guess, we purchased a retail unit (ten, in fact… just to make sure it wasn’t an isolated issue) and both the JoyCons and the Console are not compatible with vinyl wraps or any adhesive-backed skin of any kind.

Are you sure those are really scratches? Sometimes a cloth can leave small markings resembling a scratch but they can be cleaned. The cloth may need to be slightly wet.

Yes, unfortunately I'm sure. They're micro abrasions so they're very light and on the very top of the surface. They're only pin head sized and only visible in very certain lighting conditions when the screen is off - most people probably wouldn't notice them unless you tell them where they are and show them. But its one of those...once you know they're there, you notice them.

My concern isn't really over the micro abrasions; they're very hard to spot and don't affect the image quality at all when the screen is on. It's just the fact that it really doesn't take much to scratch the screen at all. More careless users that don't have a screen protector are likely going to have fairly scratched up screens after just moderate use in a year or two.

I had zero issues installing the Premium Hori Screen Protector to my daughters switch. I usually suck at applying screen protectors too. Zero complaints. It's crystal clear. My daughter doesn't even notice I put one on her Switch.

I'll likely get one for the Switch I'll get myself in the Summer.

Oh, fantastic. Seriously? After I bought an officially licensed product and applied it?

Guess it's never coming off, then. Glad I invested the time and concentration required to align each section of the skin perfectly.

apparently the pdp ones are unaffected, for some reason. dbrand states that any vinyl adhesives will damage it - perhaps the pdp ones aren't vinyl?
Wait so the PDP ones aren't affected??? Really?

What I did. Used the dust tape amfilm provides to make the hinge.

I did my amFilm last night.

Hinge lead to perfect alignment... but then removing the stickers was harder than i thought. The strong adhesive led to lifting up the protector on accident. Or maybe it was just the top film.

Did it in a steamy room and still ended up with one piece of dust or little hair or something. I thought about lifting it with tape to get it out, but it seemed hard to lift and i think i heard that can let even more under and/or compromise the application.

I might be able to deal if i can't see it while playing.

Did anyone's Orzly tempered glass protectors turn up today? Mine is apparently due tomorrow, but I'm not very confident that it will.

So, still no orzly review huh? If only amfil ships in Canada

Someone had one in one of these threads. They ordered it on eBay. They didn't post pictures or anything and they haven't been back to complain about it peeling away in the dock so i guess that's good. I think there is no cut out for the auto brightness sensor though, but i can't really see what difference that would make.

Oh. That's good news indeed. Still waiting for mine.

I finally decided to put on the amField screen protector, went on mostly well and got all of the bubbles out except for one that is not on the screen so all in all 9.5/10. Easily the best protector I installed myself.

So I just got back after several hours with my second amFilm replacement screen. For those who may not be aware, I initially had massive bubbles with both screens. To note, I have installed more than a dozen screen protectors. This replacement came in rapidly, and I have a 100% success with my new screen. Did the same method that I did initially (hinge stick method) and it worked perfectly. The YouTube video offered by amFilm is basically useless to have a foolproof installation. I don't know why this installation worked perfectly compared to the first time, but I don't want to hear this crap about "skill." I hope everyone installs their screen successfully!

Got my PDP case today (Mario version). Well, for a cheap case it is okay... I don't think the build quality is bad, at least on mine. Everything is in tip top shape, no hanging threads, no rips on the exterior, etc.

however there is one thing about it I automatically don't like... when the Switch is inside and the case is fully zipped up and closed, it takes a very low amount of pressure applied and you will hear the thumbsticks 'click', so little pressure that it's barely more pressure than if it were not inside a case at all.

I really want a case that offers a little more protection for the sticks. So, I will be looking into something else... but this will be okay for two or three weeks I guess.

I do like the pattern design on the outside, inside, and the Mario Coin as the zipper though.

I'd recommend this case if you want something cheap, offers some low level protection and you don't think you will ever have your case in a situation where it might get slightly 'squished' (like in a backpack)

As for my amfilm glass screen protector, i went to install it immediately after taking a shower to help minimize dust. I use this same brand on my iPhone 7 Plus and it worked perfectly on the first try... however this time I could not seem to get all the air bubbles out no matter how hard i tried, and just when I thought I got 98% of the bubbles out... I there was a dust particle right in the middle of the screen! I was pressed for time so just said screw it... I'll have a 2nd go with the spare inside the package sometime this week when I'm not rushed... my mistake. But that was actually the first time I ever failed to apply one properly, was a bit frustrating.

My AmFilm protector got delivered today. I'm going to play Zelda as normal tonight, and apply the protector at work tomorrow first thing, which will allow time for the protector to settle. My work is in a pretty dust free office building, so I think that'll probably be good.

So Orzly uploaded a video of their tempered glass protectors to YouTube, they run it through a few tests and demonstrate the hinge method of installing it.

https://youtu.be/1U3byIjQ5tQ

In the video they recommend letting it set for around 8 hours. It also has the cutout for the light sensor, contrary to what a poster on here said.

Installed my amfilm protector tonight (hinge method). The first attempt failed, with unsightly bubbles that I just couldn't get rid of. So I opened up the second protector and applied that one. Still a small bubble on the edge of the left bezel, which is gonna bug the heck out of me, but the screen is fine, so I guess I'll just live with it.

Looks like we all need to find a friend or a nice Gaf member with a 3D printer.

This fix looks great.

I have a maker select 3d printer that could easily handle this so I am excited once the dude on reddit gets done making the file for us to download.

The possibility of a custom front with a switch logo or other things is going to make this a fantastic fix. Too bad nintendo didn't think of this and sell cover plates like the 3ds.

I'm still waiting on the Orzly one I ordered but the cheap pdp film one went on surprisingly well and isn't at all noticeable. Kind of surprised because I have terrible memories of the film type of screen protectors.

Short of a visit to one retailer that might have other tempered glass protectors, it looks like this is the one i'm going with, given that it's the only one that will arrive in a decent amount of time.

EDIT: Well, Caseology decided to relist & needs the order cancelled.

This looks good (would be even better if it was matte black!) and it's nice that it uses the rest of the original dock as well. As much as I would like a 3rd party solution to the problem, I would rather use first party tech as much as possible.

AmFilm came today and it was so easy to put on. Definitely recommended!

Agreed. I don't put screen protectors on any of my devices but this couldn't have been simpler and it looks amazing. Can't even tell it's on there. In fact, I think this shows finger prints even less than the regular screen so it's even better. So happy with the purchase and happy to finally use the switch out of the dock.

I'm gonna order this today but I'm really nervous since I am generally awful at putting on screen protectors. But I just bought a Switch a few days ago and don't want to mess it up.

I applied the amFilm screen protector today and I could not be happier with the results. No screen bubbles or visible dust under the screen! Here are the steps I followed if anyone is interested:

1. Run a hot shower for approximately 10 minutes
2. Clean the bathroom counter thoroughly
3. Line up the screen protector where you want it on your Switch
4. Use hinge stickers to attach the screen protector to your switch so that you can flip it back and forth, like the cover of a book
5. Thoroughly clean the actual screen of the switch, first with the alcohol wipe, then with the dry wipe
6. Remove the sticky side plastic off the glass of the screen protector and use the plastic tabs on the side to help guide it down
7. Use the included card and cleaning cloth to remove any additional air bubbles.
8. Play Zelda without any worry of scratching the screen!

My amFilm protector showed up today. Before I apply it - are these tempered glass protectors pretty easy to remove without harming the device? They provided two so I imagine that they are meant to be removed and replaced at some point.

I recommend the amFilm glass screen protector as well, I spent this morning applying it after removing the old one that bubbled. And had zero issues, and no bubbles. Time wise it took less than 10 minutes, and that includes reading the instructions :)

Also they come in 2 packs as well. So if you do mess up one you have a spare (at least the one I ordered from Amazon did).

Thanks, that one ships to Canada so I bought it, I've been waiting for the Orzly one with a freaking nebulous date.

whichever I get first goes on my Switch screen.

After them ignoring many emails, contacted GAME again, spoke to someone, and they're refusing to give me a refund for the obviously defective Premium Hori Screen Protector. Honestly I'm not surprised by this. GAME are an awful company who don't give a damn about peoples rights. It's a good job it's only £15.

Mean while, I still haven't received the Orzly Tempered Glass Screen Protector from G-hub I think it is on Amazon UK. It was meant to arrive yesterday after being dispatched last Monday. They said they shipped it via Royal Mail, not sure I believe that...

I'm just not having any luck at all with these things lol.

Another +1 for amfilm on my side. 100% recommend it. I'm a screen protector veteran and found it pretty easy to do. Wet wiped the screen, dried it, made sure all the dust was off, then lined up and applied. No issues.

I did put it in the dock right after, I should check that today if there's any issue.

Also, fyi I ordered on on March 6th and received it on the 13th. A week turnaround, even if it said out of stock.

I'm in the same boat, mate. If it hasn't turned up by tomorrow I'll be making some enquiries.

Got my amFilm protectors today and just applied one of them.

The bad news is that I screwed up the other one by allowing too much dust to catch onto the adhesive. I would definitely recommend applying this in a clean bathroom at the very least.

Even attempting with the second protector had me paranoid because as I was trying to align it properly, the second piece of plastic came off and that laid the protector down in place when I wasn't ready. This alignment doesn't seem to look perfect, but I'm just going to believe that the cutout for the protector doesn't fill the entire screen.

Now I'm short one screen protector unless I can use the dust removal stickers to get rid of the dust if I'm ever going to use it.

Are these good for the life of the console, and are people allowing a day for it to settle in before using the dock?

so how does the steaming bathroom method work? I just fill the bathtub with hot water and wait till it's all foggy? won't the switch screen become foggy too?

this sounds really dumb and I'm probably worrying too much

You wait a bit before going in and doing it. The steam is supposed to attach to the floating particles in the air and bring them down so there aren't any dust particles in the air when you apply it.

screwed up my first attempt by getting a bit of dust under the protector, second time almost flawless except a tiny piece of dust outside of the screen area, I can live with that

Yup have the amfilm one on as well. It feels great, makes touching the screen feel much much better. Can't wait for some touch based games now.

Rare case in which the screen protector actually makes the device much better.
