Neo Geo games coming to Nintendo Switch

Glad to see the colors are fixed.

I have Metal Slug 3, Waku Waku 7, and King of Fighters 98. I'm thinking about getting Shock Troopers next.

quick pic i took with my phone, no filter mode is the best, now the pixels really pop out of the screen!

Now that these are finally patched, I may jump in!

I asked this earlier in the thread though: how worthwhile are these games if you will never play them with another person?

I asked this earlier in the thread, and somebody recommended Waku Waku and Shock Troopers, but there was no explanation as to why.

Are the campaigns still satisfying to play alone? Is there even a campaign in Waku Waku? Any replayability? How about length?

Convince me to buy the best single-player experience from this NeoGeo selection!

I believe sound delay and slowdown is still in MS3. I own Dotemu copy and the colors are more washed out than Switch version now that the colors have been fixed, but I don't get the sound delay or as much slowdown on that version compared to the Switch version either.

I can't compare this to the PS4 version of AA to see how the Switch version compares unfortunately. Whish I knew how much slowdown was in that one. Even though colors are better on Switch the slowdown bothers me.

It will be interesting to see how the Arcade Archives looks and performs when it releases on Steam. I will probably get it on Steam since this is one of my all time favorite arcade games.

So I checked Metal Slug 3, King of Fighters, and Waku Waku.

Visuals now look colorful and vibrant.

What a huge difference compared to before.

Some detail about the sound delay to help people decide if it will bother them or not.

In the fighting games it is not going to be very noticeable unless you know where to look. A hit is going to register many frames after you press the button so in effect all it does is make the hit sound a little meatier. Not a big deal unless you use sounds for timing links and such. If you just wanna screw around scrub style with friends in kof you probably won't even know it is there.

In Metal Slug on the other hand the gun shot sound should trigger on the same frame as the gun shot animation. Right now there is about a 300-400ms (just a guess) delay between the two. When rapid firing you won't be able to tell because so many animation and sound triggers are occurring so quickly it becomes a blur. It just feels bad when it is detectable as I've mentioned before somewhat similar to input delay, though I would say this is milder than input delay.

Make your own call how much you think this will bother you. And hopefully another patch is coming so it won't matter.

Waku Waku 7 is an arcade fighting game, so there is nothing to the game besides fighting lol.

These games are all arcade ports so they're designed for quick bursts of play and to be replayed over and over. How much you get out of them depends on you, really. I'd suggest watching some gameplay on YT.

Shock Troopers is like any other arcade shooter in that, while it's obviously better with coop, the actual campaign is still a blast to play through on your own. A playthrough is also technically shorter than, say, Metal Slug 3, there's a ton of replay value due to the branching paths and different characters actually having different abilities.

Waku Waku 7 has a campaign in as much as fighting games of the 90s did. You do the whole ladder against the ai and fight a final boss. It's a very fun fighter, but if you are worried about never playing it with other people, Shock Troopers might be the better get for you.

After buying Metal Slug 3 for like the 4-5th time now I'm kind of remembering how boring this game gets in repeat playthroughs. I know 4, 5 and 6 get a bad rap sometimes but they felt more like successors to Metal Slug 1 and I liked that about them, didn't over complicate the formula with everything and the kitchen sink like MS3 is.

Either way I'm excited to see more ports from Hamster. Waku Waku 7 is great but Sunsoft really nailed it out of the park with Astra Superstars so I'd love to eventually see some unique ports in the future, not just of Neo Geo games. It probably would never happen but it'd be a great fighter on the Switch. The way the combos are easy to perform and the wackiness of the game made me a huge fan when I played it for the first time about 6 months ago.

How playable are these games (especially the fighters) without a dpad?

A few thoughts on the joycon d-pad and fighters after messing a good bit with the fundamentals.

Using the grip or hooked on to the system is required, imo. Playing free hand is great for a lot of Switch games but when you need to execute fighting game motions it just doesn't work. You need that stability and leverage.

My fireball execution is basically 100% and no real effort or adjustment was required.

Double fireball is closer to 80-90%. With a bit of practice I am sure I can get that up to basically 100%.

Dragon punch is more around 50%. I can hit it about half the time but I do have to focus. Improving execution there probably wouldn't take a ton of practice. No idea what the practical ceiling is, this is just fuzzy data based on my farting around.

Not gonna storm EVO with a joy con or anything, but I wouldn't consider it a dire input method.

I should add that I have been playing stuff like Shovel Knight using the d-pad and making small adjustments with how I shift my thumb meat compared to a standard d-pad. The lack of a "center" part to the d-pad does feel odd at first, but I've adjusted to it painlessly. No idea if these have stacked up in any meaningful way for fighting games over the past week and a half, but I didn't jump in cold I guess.

Also, I did all my testing using Hanzou in World Heroes Perfect since he is basically Ryu.

If you want these games to be properly scaled for the Switch's screen you can adjust the "Size of the display" to be 150 instead of 160. This also helps with the display of some of the lighter scanlines. Scanlines still kill the brightness though. I haven't gotten to mess with this setting on a TV yet.

Good on Hamster for fixing the colors. There's still some other nitpicks that could be addressed, but for the most part you've got my wallet again!

joycons are no bueno for this, hell, I don't even like the joycons, I am glad the pro controller is supported here and not like Blaster Master Zero which does not even let the console to sync my pro controller when that game is active

I've noticed similar. I'm somewhat freaked out at how well the joycon's button pad works.

Doesn't read OPs, especially not his own
Was there any update to waku waku 7? I played it earlier on my lunch break .

Actually thinking back, it did prompt me about no internet for no reason, maybe that was a update.

Why do you people buy stuff that has significant flaws? I mean incorrect colors and no use of two player joy cons? Don't buy inferior software.

It's about sending a message.....

in some cases, like waku waku 7, its the only legal version that exists that you can buy, and so alot of the times we're at the mercy of publishers because of it.

Off-topic, but they've already said that Blaster Master will be updated soon with Pro support.

Alright guys KoF or WakuWaku7? I have one KoF on the Wii VC, whichever one was released first on the system... 97 maybe? I didn't have a lot of fun with it, but I love the KoF series overall.

Testing MS3, it seems to me like the sound is fine in handheld mode but has some delay when docked. Anyone else experiencing this?

Graphics look great now.

If you've already tried KoF and bounced off, Waku Waku 7 has more... personality? Maybe start there and see if it gels with you more.

I agree with this, it's a very good suggestion.

Also, fuck Fernandez, man. I was just playing Waku Waku 7 on PS2 the other day, and that guy is typical SNK style boss: cheap as fuck. But it's OK, since the game is quite charming anyway, and a lot of fun to play.

Lastly, it seems my question about scanlines from the last page was answered indirectly by someone above in this page. Seems like there is an option for scanlines, but at the moment produces a suboptimal image.

Each time I check I wonder if I am going crazy. Then I compare to MAME (not authorial I realize but best I have handy) and side by side it is immediately obvious.

I do wonder if the attack on the gun sound in Metal Slug comes across a bit weak and contributes. Will do side by side testing with good headphones tomorrow.

I got Metal Slug 3.
What display settings are best to use???
I am playing it portably.

I use:

Display Settings >
Size of display > Size: 150
Screen filter: off

Think that is all I changed. Messed around a lot. Will probably toy with scanlines some but those are the most straight forward 'clean' settings.

Thanks, that was a really good post. Hopefully they'll be a 'dpad pro' joycon or 'joycon classic' in the future.

Well, a dpad is just four buttons underneath a plastic cross, so it kind of makes sense.

I can't wait for the first vertical TATE-able games come out. Like Star Soldier. I haven't received my Hori Dock yet, but I wonder if that supports the switch standing on its side.. I assume that won't be an issue if I take the controllers off.

Playing Star Soldier and Twinbee in TATE mode on PSP was awesome.

Actually, I just looked. The one I bought on my Wii was KoF 94. YEESH. Not wonder it felt rough. I'm sure 99 has a lot of improvements over it. Maybe I'll pick up both?

Yeah, got it, thanks.
Looks so much better from 160.

depending what you want, I found that for pixel accuracy 133 should be near 4x while 100 is actually 3x resolution of the NeoGeo resolution when in 1080p, in 720p (which applies to portable) 150 is your best bet
