Nier: Automata PC performance thread

Yeah, there's definitely some post process AA there by default.

This should be common sense for PC games, but if anyone is unhappy with their performance I'd recommend lowering or just disabling the AA setting in the options altogether. I think the game still looks great (some textures aside) without MSAA.

Another thing, is this amount of pop-in to be expected? Is this what it's like on the PS4 version?

Somethings up with that. There's pop-in on PS4 Pro but nowhere close to being that bad.

I take it this game will kill a Intel HD 4000 system, even on low and with an i5-4670, right?

I really need to upgrade...

probably not?

anyways i got 60 fps on a 670/i 5200K with the resolution set to 720p. game would run at 30fps at 1080p on low. looks like i'm refunding for that ps4 pro version.

Jesus, even the base PS4 doesn't have pop in anywhere near that at the absolute worst case, its gotta be some really weird bug

Using the Borderless Fullscreen application in the OP fixed the full screen res bug I had.

Yay! That was my one real quirk.

I preordered and am excited to check it out. Judging by reports here it seems solid as long as you use Borderless Gaming.

Anyone have a system similar to me?

Intel Core i5 2500k Overclocked to 4.3GHz
16GB DDR3 RAM
GTX 770 2GB

Win 10

The game runs flawlessly at 1080p with everything maxed it including AA. 60fps with slight dips to 57 was the lowest I saw.

Really not getting the reports of it being a bad port--Basic, but great performing

You're not getting the white screen crash that's being reported by users with 470/480 cards? I can't finish the intro level without crashing on a 470.

So, I'm running this game at 3440x1440... and although it supports ultrawide resolutions, the game seems suuuper blurry. Is it just me? Like, my monitor says the game is running at native resolution and such like. Is the internal renderer lower than the output resolution?

Also, yes, can confirm that pop in is all kinds of bad :|

How can performance be so different for so many players??

Even on Steam i am reading comments from "flawless 60fps" to "unplayable".

I am little confused.

Some strange results in this thread, seems all over the place.

not really. you need the hardware to run it if you want 60fps. borderless gaming app will let you do that at 1440p granted you have the hardware. 2gb vram cards should not be opting for 1080p 60fps...if you ask me, 2gb vram should not cut it nowadays.

Damn, now fullscreen is broken. I just get a black screen. It was fine for an hour, and now I have to restart the game.

My case was at least a little extreme. There was some hope after the MGR port requirements ended up being highly exaggerated, but this seems to be an extremely demanding game, so there's not as much hope for older GPUs.

I am seeing a lot of reports of 9XX series nvidia cards struggling, but with the lack of detailed graphic options to tweak, I'm sure the game is just hitting some weak points on certain cards moreso than others. Could also be something fundamentally wrong with the port, but I'll wait for more concrete evidence before suggesting that.

I wonder if they are also responsible for much of the download size like in MGR.

That game was 22 GB and 20 of those were video.

It is! The 'movie' folder is 25GB.

Is it just me or are the controls REALLY wonky?

Like, the menu scrolls at lightning speed when pressing down on the D-pad and when I press A, the game interprets it as two or three button presses.

i73820/GTX1070, playing at 1080p with everything maxed, haven't dropped a single frame below 60 in the first 2 hours. I'd like higher refresh rates, but 60 feels fine with a controller.

Looks like I'll get to join you all in about 1hr 45min when this downloads

23% off Nier Automata at GMG - use the voucher code X2EU4J-EMO5AU-S9IRJY

Since I had £1.20 left over - the game cost £29.96

Wasn't planning on buying but there it is. More amusingly, I will be using this on the ancient circa 2006 VGA montior that is still higher resolution than the damn pre-rendered cutscenes

Could be a steam bug where inputs get doubled / quadrupled as it registers the same controller multiple times. A quick restart of steam should solve it.

bruh but the cutscenes

also damn can a 1070 really do 8xAA and 60fps on this game...i need to upgrade at some point
You mean fixing the 30fps 900p? 'cause that ain't going away.
Unless you mean some other bug.

I wish that was the case! I've only played about 30 minutes of the game but I don't think any cutscene has been prerendered or 900p, but whatever it is, they mostly run quite poorly. Literally slideshows.

Game straight up doesn't work. Past the intro screen turns black, music plays, and I can't do anything. Clicking outside the window causes the game to crash along with steam itself. Turned gsync off, set 144 hz monitor to 60, etc. Fuck

Guess I'm going to go get day smashed at SXSW
Happened to a few games I've played. What usually works for me is reinstalling the redist files in the game install folder. For Nier, it's the _CommonRedist folder. Maybe try installing DXSETUP. Manaully installing all the other redist files would take awhile since there's lots of them.

Actually, have you verified the game files?

This is a longshot in terms of solutions, but if you are using a Dualshock 4 and don't have the "Hide Dualshock 4" option enabled in DS4Windows, it can act like you have both a DS4 and a normal gamepad hooked up at once - thus making every button press count twice.

Happens to me in The Witcher III if I don't check that box. Again, not sure if you're using that controller or that program with it, but it's similar to something I've experienced elsewhere.

2gb vram just doesnt cut it nowadays. mgs5 is very well optmized and runs smoothly but its hardly a good looking game. u can run mgs5 at those frames with a worse gpu.-

"but its hardly a good looking game" wait, sorry? It's a damn freaky good looking game. Even better than NieR technically speaking. I wasnt expecting to run @1080p 60fps in my specs, but really 10fps @1366 × 768 with LOW graphics options??? It just a lazy and poor port that requires way much hardware than needed because is badly coded.

So, in the starting area.... i5 6600k, GTX 970, Seems to run smooth with everything high except AA. AA is really taxing, even 2x makes a stable 60 hard to maintain.

What resolution scales best on a 4k TV/monitor? Should I be running it at 1080p 8X MSAA? Because 4k is 45-55 FPS at best on a 1080 GTX.

Sounds like double inputs. What kind of controller are you using? Are you using any software to emulate an xinput controller or something similar?

Nah, it requires more than 2GB of VRAM. MGSV runs on 512MB consoles this is designed for much higher amounts of VRAM 2GB just isn't enough. It's got nothing to do with laziness

Unless you mean some other bug.

The prerendered cutscenes don't run consistently at 30. They hitch up and stutter a ton.

Not worth playing through such a story heavy game right now if that's how they're going to act up.

For me it was Controller Companion that was fucking it up.

Yeah, the cutscene thing is fucked up. For a game like this, it's really hard to deal with.

Even Drakengard 3 had smooth cutscenes.

Yeah I know I actually didnt express very well. I am more like "I cant just believe a game with those graphics demands more than 2GB of VRAM to run well". But it's ok, I eventually will buy it for PS4 when I get the console.

Are the cutscenes the same on PS4? :(

That a shame because I was aiming for PC first, for once, but if it's riddled with too much shit I'll just go buy it straight on PS4...like...TONIGHT because I've been waiting on this version to come out since it was announced.

*Closes book* And that's why it's better to have real time cutscenes, kids.

Automata at least allows switching off AO and changing shadow detail, but MGSV had extensive graphical options to gain as many frames as possible for lower end systems.

Not that I'm happy about the way this port plays for us - I haven't had a lot of interest in games for a very long time, and I can't even run the one 'major' release I was excited for. But there are different targets for MGSV (and MGR, for a comparison with the same dev house as Automata) and Automata. What can you do?

VRAM is almost never related to sustained framerate. If you are low on ram you'd get drops and stutters as stuff is being loaded, but not low framerates across the board.

DualShock 4, and I think CHC is on the money, I am using DS4Windows since I am on Windows 7 and it won't install properly on it's own. Gonna give that a shot. Thanks!

1080p is the ideal scale since it will get scaled up x4 to 4K. But in that case, you might as well downsample from 1440p and maybe even add some msaa if you can. Then let the tv take the 1080p image up to 4k.
