I bought NieR: Automata, though I probably won't start it until next month. How does it play with the Steam controller?
Very well. What you need though is a toggle to switch the right touchpad to stick mode (from camera mode) for some sequences. (I put it on the right grip button)
Mouse-like camera mode is great for all the "standard" 3rd person parts of the game.

I think it's probably because it's fucking amazing.

(I say that as someone who had Nier 1 as his game of the year)
i would love someone to point out what part of nier 2 actually amazed them

nier 1 i can name dozens, but this one hasn't made me pause even once

nier 2 is a huge "here we go again..."

I'll never understand gaf's love for Nier, I would if it was a good game, but it really wasn't.

Anyway, are those shmup sections in Automata hard?
not in the slightest (in normal difficulty at least)

the game's been fairly easy so far, took me like 9 hours to die for the first time

it's not a bad easy tho, game's real mashy but it'll kill you if u don't heal or you go somewhere you're not supposed to

Finally finished Nier Automata. Probably some of the best writing I've seen in a video game this generation and last. Persona 5 would have to be even more amazing in order to knock this game as my GOTY.

The gameplay is not terribly deep but the combat feels really good for me. It's ugly but still has great atmosphere and ambiance. The music is incredible and used very well through out the game. I love the story and I have barely even scratched the surface. It's Nier with Platinium gameplay, to me that's amazing.

i guess where my thoughts are on nier right now is that it's all style and little substance

which is exactly what i thought it'd be when i heard platinum was making it

i'm not one to get pissed off at names being used "improperly" so whatever if it's bayonetta in nier's clothes, but this combat is way too simple for it to be a good bayonetta game

Sounds good. Thanks.

It's definitely not as good as Bayonetta in the combat department, but going by the first nier's gameplay it's a HUGE step up and what drove people to play that game was it's story and music. I say kick back and enjoy the ride of this game as the story takes you over :)

yeah Nier does NOT run like a game that looks like it does should run. Oh well, not a deal breaker by any means, but theres some noticiable chugging even with AA turned off.

So i have played Nier for a few hours yesterday, and i gotta say it's really really fun to play. I expected it to be good, but it was still much better then i anticipated (went in almost fully blind). Has been a long time since i had this much fun with a game.

Happily!
I enjoy talking about games I love.
Note that I went in completely blind, I didn't even know the characters or anything about the setting -- I tuned out after the very first release trailer since I knew I was going to play this one.

I'm only done with route A, which as we know is very little in terms of story of a Nier game, but here we go:
  • The fact that it starts off with (first 5 minutes "spoiler")
an implementation of all 3 major shmup genres: scrolling, dual analog, and starfox-like.
And more than that, they are good implementations.
    Better than Nier 1's.
Before playing the game I was a bit concerned that they'd do away with or focus less on the genre mashup, and that immediately not just put my fears to rest, but amazed me with its quality.
  • Just the basic combat and controls, even in the tutorial already. 2B feels amazing to control, and combat looks absolutely fantastic. I don't think I've played any game where a perfect dodge is more satisfying.
  • The setup for (early game spoiler)
the first major post-tutorial boss in the desert area. It's amazingly atmospheric, and that was the point where I knew that I was playing a Taro game and not "just" a good action RPG.
  • The entire (mid route A spoiler)
amusement park area was just fantastic, both audio-visually and in terms of what it meant for the story and how it defines the "factions" you interact with
    .
  • Most recently, the story run up from (end route A spoiler)
the point you lose 9S to the end of the route. It fleshes out 2B's character and is extremely captivating. I actually wanted to stop playing yesterday ~3 hours before I finally managed to - it was that exciting.
  • The variety in pacing and environments. I love that you have periods of frantic activity interspersed with more laid-back side-questing, and you also have large open world areas alternating with tighter locations (which might also switch to different perspectives). This is something many games get wrong, and that type of variety is really important to hold my interest.
  • The music. It's just as good as Nier 1's, and that's really the highest compliment imaginable.

It's my birthday - so here is a gift from me :)

Happy Birthday!

-I did not enter-

Just beat Transformers Devastation. Sooo good but man is it short. The running around the same area several times though in slightly different ways was disappointing as well. Really enjoyed it though, hope they make a proper sequel and Activision gives Plat. time to do their thing in the right way. The weird shift to being like the old cartoon in the last few cut scenes was out of nowhere as well lol.

Moving on to Nier Automata! Gotta figure out how to stream it though since that is my new goal.

I'll get it for 15€ on PS4 in its GOTY version, play it and sell it back for 7€ like I did for Inquisition.

I'll wait until it gets added to Origin Access vault. I was very disappointed by the first 10h I played and the reviews don't suggest that it'll get better.

That's what the performance thread is for.

Besides, there's only a couple and they are extremely basic. Not worth it until something more comprehensive debuts.

Nier is real close to 100K on steamspy now it probably is over 100K already, seeing as it jumped back to being a topseller.

Disgaea 2 otoh had huge drop in numbers compared to the fist game. Disgaea - 120K , Disgaea 2 - 25K.
I also was wondering for a while, anybody actually played it? I don't mean replayed, but those who haven't played it before. And if yes, have you finished it?
as it has something like 20 hour playtime average, which could mean that nobody finished it easily.

edited: I also noticed that Blackwake is at almost 200K
wow
anybody plays it?

Remember that SteamSpy has a few-day lag, so the actual number in the here and now is somewhat higher.
