So how bad is the Switch stock situation?

Nintendo NYC is the place to go for Switch accessories, apparently.

Yet your post doesn't shine an iota of a light on the manufacturing process.

Not really sure how you plan 1 shipment for launch and leave it at that for 3 weeks. Then again Nintendo is obviously new to the hardware business as it's a reoccurring theme for them.
just. wow. It takes a couple months to manufacture and then ship something okay?

The Switch is selling better than everyone anticipated and that is great for all parties involved. Most of the people that wanted one were able to get one. Games will get published on it due to strong sales. If you want to be bitter for not having a Switch, blame only yourself, because there were ample opportunities to pre-order one or get one on March 3. Half the Walmarts didn't even have lines and some had them in-stock for a day or two. Half the Targets had them in stock for an hour or two on launch morning. Now you get to wait for a restock, because you didn't know what you wanted two weeks ago. It's not the end of the world and you chose this. If stores were stocked to the brim half of these buyers would be back to not pulling the trigger again.

Everything about this console launch has been a giant success. Gamestop getting a restock this week is good news. There have been plenty of posts in here giving tips on how to score one on Wednesday. You can be proactive and score one if you choose to do so.

They started manufacturing these months ago and should have a steady supply line.

True, but they can only manufacturer so much a day(about 20k a day going by that Foxconn leak), and they've pretty much sold through that first major batch of 1.5-2 mil by now. They will likely ship in decent size batches to replenish Worldwide supplies in a manner similar to how they launched, which means that they have to wait until they accumulate a decent amount. From what I gathered in this thread, it seems like that the time for another major shipment is drawing nigh.

In fact, I came here partly to share some related news.

The rep from a local GameStop in the "Bed-Stuy" area of Brooklyn (on Fulton st, between Nostrand and Bedford avenues, for anyone near the area) said, today, that they will receive a shipment next week. He said it will be on a first-come first serve basis so come early cause there's gonna be a line and "it's gonna be crazy!"
I scoffed; "crazy?! You're telling me that this little joint gonna get crazy?"
I'm aware Nintendo Switch is the new hotness, but it's not like this was one of the more notable GameStop outlets in the city.
He shook his head from side to side as though to imply that I'm underestimating just how in-demand the Switch is, and proceeded to explain:
"Man listen, I start work at 3pm," he said; "and already I've had about 10 people come in asking for the system. So yeah."(it was approaching 4pm during our conversation).
It seemed like this was pretty much how his days have been going as of lately. I asked him if he knew exactly what day the shipment would arrive, but he apparently didn't. He just told me that they are expecting the consoles to be available at midnight(of whichever day next week). He had a bunch of Switch promotional flyers on the counter, and told me to grab a couple just before leaving.
I'm hoping to get a Switch this summer, but if I'm tempted - and get the time - I might look into this.

Note: Some slightly paraphrased quotes, from the best of my memory.

I believe the above. I took my Switch to work today and had three different people ask me about it in a short time. Not stereotypical gamer types. More like Bass Pro Shop types. One guy's wife was as excited as he was to talk about it. And they knew it by name for the most part. The wife called it the new Nintendo.

Haven't seen anything like this since the Wii/DS years.

So is it recommended to be waiting outside before Gamestop opens on Wednesday, or are they just getting them in from UPS at some point during business hours on Wenesday?

It depends on your store. They might not even receive a shipment on Wednesday and if they do it can be any time after they open. UPS delivers until 9PM but I don't know if they have a time frame for business delivery. Even if they do receive a delivery they might not have them for sale until the next day if they are busy and can't take care of inventory.

I know my local store get's shipments around 2PM but sometimes earlier and sometimes later.

your best chance to score is to be there when the UPS truck arrives on Wednesday. Talk to the people at your local store to find out when the truck usually makes its stop.

Gamestop seems to be getting new supply, but what about Targets? I can't support Gamestop, even though I'm dying for a switch. (And I'm swimming in Target gift cards.)

I've never had this much trouble getting a console at launch. Even the 360 was much easier for me to find - FOREVER ago lol.

Let's hope it's better than the Nintendo classic nes. People still can't get them even though it has as much technology as a TV remote (had mine since launch)

Ask me about the moon landing or the temperature at which jet fuel burns. You may be surprised at what you learn.
I went to EB Games and asked if they had the Switch in stock and the guy laughed at me :(

These are not comparable situations.

The reason Nintendo didn't ramp up production of the NES Classic faster is that there's no after-sale profit potential. Nintendo will never make more money on an NES Classic sold after they sell it: there are no games to buy, and few accessories, meaning that if they were to oversupply, they would just be flat out those manufacturing costs.

The more Switches they can get to retail, the more money they make from game sales, overpriced accessories, etc. Every sign points to Nintendo reacting differently here, although it still takes time for second shipments (given they were rushing to market to begin with).

LOL Yeah, I got that at Best Buy when I stopped in.

The best reaction by far has been when I called up Target and asked to speak to electronics (for some reason no one there answered and it put me through to the central line) and the lady preemptively said "If you're calling about the Nintendo Switch we're all out of stock".

Working in retail during a console launch - that's impossible to find - must get tiresome. I'm sure I was the 1000th person asking that day.

Casually grocery shopping and since ive been looking for days at all my local big ratail stores with no luck.. I happened to come across one! The gray switch. I was like holly cow! There was someone waiting for an associate and I was sweating bullets thinking that he would ask for it, but he ended up asking for a phone. Picked up the switch, a pro controller(debating if I should return it since I'll be playing handheld mode 80% of the time) and zelda. I guess I got lucky!

On a side note the more I play it, the more it reminds me of the sega game gear. Is that just me?

Just picked up a switch from Walmart, employee there confirmed they got 6 units in this morning at like 2:30am. Immediately stocked on the shelf, and I got one. Today would be a good day to check your local Walmart, the earlier the better.

I thought stores usually receive shipments on Mondays or Tuesdays. Because video game stuff usually releases on Tuesdays. It would also make sense to get them then so they can have them ready sell at opening on Wednesday morning.

Stuff was picked clean looking at target, Best Buy and toysrus in concord nh. They had barley anything switch related in stock. I did hear people talking and asking for the switch in Best Buy. Some hot college girl seemed obsessed trying to find one talking to employees at Best Buy. I did see rds cases, including the big case that holds the dock to. Also a wolf link amiiboo which I snagged.

From the vibe and chatter, the switch is getting people hyped to buy it simply due to scarcity and word of mouth combined with Zelda getting a ton of love, even though these folks aren't huge gamers. I'm also noticing ds and portable gamers wanting the switch, as if it's the new Nintendo stand alone ds/portable.

Think they might have the "it" item of 2017

Welp, put an order in on the Nintendo UK store for a grey Switch, Zelda and a Pro controller under the assumption it would be a few weeks before stock gets in. But it's now saying the controller and Zelda have been dispatched (obviously more surprised about the controller there) with the console itself "awaiting stock pick" with an estimated dispatch date of today. Or is the awaiting stock pick just a standard placeholder thing?

I'm going to start checking iStockNow every morning for the 24 hour walmart by me. Figure I can run over before work if one shows up.

I was at Target yesterday and the only Nintendo hardware available was the 2DS and the Switch tether. Look, I need a pro controller.

*sigh*

Nintendo, do you not understand how the hardware and console accessories business works? If this is planned scarcity for marketing purposes - than your plan is not working. This is not a PS2 situation where every 16-35 year old bought your last Console. You're just angering centers of influence at this point. People who want to love your console but can't.

Nintendo hardware is represented at my Walmart by a single Mario Kart 2DS.

It's pathetic.

Is Foxconn the only place that manufactures Switches and other devices? Or are there others companies use?

If it's just Foxconn, I can see why all these companies have stock issues. How can one manufacturing company keep up with all the different devices they have to make, like Switches, iphones and PS4s.

We got plenty of 'em in Taiwan. Went into two shops down on Kaohsiung computer street and they had some behind the counter. Holding off for Splatoon 2, though.

Think we'll see accessories showing up, too? I want a Pro Controller and a case because I am traveling on Sunday and don't know how to bring this thing with me.

Manufacturing is quite complicated. First there is the purchasing of the individual components. For Nintendo to ramp up production they need to ramp up how much components they order. In there are custom components, this could take some time. Then there is the actually production line. This isn't a cartoon where you can press a button and speed everything up. Speeding up the production rate or getting another factory to produce the product takes time. There is the basic factory test before the product can be shipped. Then there is the actually shipping which takes time.

With all this it is not surprising that it takes a few weeks for stock situation to improve.

Why do people call asking for it in the afternoon? They likely sell out in minutes, until a significant restock happens if imagine if they had any they'd be gone within half an hour every day.

Can I ask a question that may appear to be a bit snarky but isn't intended to be?

Why didn't you guys pre-order? You post on here, you know the rules of the game for new consoles. Or were you surprised by the positive feedback (I was too but I had a pre-order in place in case I needed it fortunately)?

I was not too interested until the positive buzz around Zelda. Plus didn't most preorders fill up super quick? If I am remembering right (?) on Amazon they launched in the middle of the night and were gone by the morning.

I had no intentions on getting a Switch at launch tho I figured if it was well received I planned on putting one under the tree this Christmas for my kids. Then I watched some Zelda footage the week it launched and now I've got the fever bad.

I figured I'd be in the store at midnight anyway so I'd just pick one up on my break.

Ten units. People lined up since 4:00 PM.

I returned an extra unopened Switch to Walmart, figuring someone would be glad to get it. The women working customer services ripped into it and tossed everything under the assumption I was some kind of scammer. When they were done it didn't look fit to buy.
