Today, March 23, 2017, streamer/speedrunner TorjeAGC beat a new world record (Any%) for The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time. Exact retime: 17:09.83 (check the video).

It wasn't too long ago when the world record was above 18 minutes. Congratulations to Torje!

I searched but found no prior thread on this.

That's awesome, I was under the impression that this run was pretty much perfected. Cool to know I was wrong.

I mean, you can tell he has absolutely mastered the game but I don't understand how the bugs work at all. He goes back to the lower portion of the Deku Tree and then Ganon is dead?

An explanation would be nice.

The simple, but not very enlightening answer, is that he tricks the game into changing the exit point of that boss door from the Gohma arena to that cutscene

So what has changed/been discovered since then in the world of OOT speeding? Since I guess at a point people thought the times wouldn't get faster.

GIM is the main find. A glitch that allows them to get the Bottle without having to visit Kakariko Village.

And they made him a Lord of Cinder. Not for virtue, but for might. Such is a lord, I suppose. But here I ask. Do we have a sodding chance?
Very nice.

Why is it the PS1/N64-era that is the most entertaining games to watch being spedrun?

Developers were barely getting acquainted with 3D worlds, so it leads to tons of world-breaking glitches. You can find similar stuff with early NES games like Zelda and SMB1.

What the fuck is this garbage? So he hacked the game and its a speed run of a hack or major glitch...wow so impressive...

Edit: Apparently I don't understand the art of speedruns.

He sets the world freaking record and then his youtube description for it is all "eh, pretty good time, made a lot of silly mistakes though"

It is a major glitch, but he didn't "hack" the game. Also, it is pretty damn impressive. Unless of course you've got a faster time?

Haven't watched any OOT stuff for a long time but I thought the iQue version was supposed to be fastest, so how much time would he have gained on an Any% run using it?

Ah, speedruns threads, there is always one of those people.

Without knowing about said glitch and coming in with an OP that doesn't state as such, I had the expectation that there was something else going on. Why can't I be unimpressed when my expectations were something different?

... have you never seen a speedrun before?

Awesome! This and Super Metroid are my favorite speedruns to watch, it's mind boggling how precise the runners are.

You came into a thread where the title says 17 mins and 9 seconds and expected it wasn't glitched? Erm... what?

When you confront your ignorance with a hot take that makes no effort to understand what's going on and instead resort to insults, you probably shouldn't expect a positive response. You could have reacted to your own ignorance in a much more positive way and have been met with more welcoming responses. Don't play the victim here. The speedrun community is a fun one and this is a very skillful run that you'd probably be able to appreciate if you were more open to it instead of letting your assholeness run wild.

so you thought he just went through the whole game in that time with no other factors?

Think of it this way: this is the fastest time anyone has every completed the game start to finish in any way. If you suddenly figure out a glitch that lets you finish it in 14 min you would be just as impressive because you'd probably have worked your way to it for years.

Whoa, wait, you seriously thought someone ran through all of OoT without using any major glitches in just eighteen minutes? I, uh, don't really know what to say to that.

Why can't I be unimpressed
You can. Just know that there's no basis for it, and that everyone else reserves the right to express how dumb and dismissive it is to be "unimpressed" at the results of several years of speedrunning, glitch hunting, and numerous discoveries about how the game's internal logic works and how it can be majorly exploited.

So I watched the run and it appears that they have found new glitches in the meantime since the 18 minute runs. I don't understand where he actually got the bottle from.

I did not think my comments would derail this thread this much, nor was it my intention. I clearly misunderstood what was going on and like I said had different expectations about how the speedrun would go down. Did I use harsh words, yes but maybe you all should go back to focusing on the record speed run instead.
