Disappointed to hear about the LGBT jokes, as someone who is really looking forward to watching this when I have the time. Glad to hear it's pretty funny overall though.

Why sorry to hear about them when you haven't heard them? Are LGBT jokes off limits?

Jim Norton has a fantastic talk with some blogger and destroys her on the idea of intent behind jokes.

Especially on the criticism vs retaliation for what was said. Feels like this video needs more views around these parts.

Yes I'm sure a comic that went on stage and talked about how dumb niggers were for an hour would sure be received greatly.

He said comedy has no limits - not that it is all successful or even funny. The above video tackles this idea too.

Its the same 3 people every thread, every thread, making it their personal mission to make life entirely about them and their victimhood.

Its not worth arguing with them

Pretty hyped on the specials honestly, but I knew coming into this thread it would be like this, because its every thread.

Wouldnt say its Daves best work but its great to know he can still get to this standard.
Most of the thread is people saying they love it bruh

No, but that doesn't mean people aren't free to criticize the jokes.

"I have no issue with someone calling out a comic and going 'Hey, I think you suck.'" - Jim Norton from the video you linked.

Yeah I understand that and I agree but he was saying "sorry to hear about them" when he hasn't even seen the special. Jokes take on a much different feel and tone when typed on a forum vs said on video by a comedian. Even if it was posted/read verbatim on here it might come off different and the post I was referring too was already sorry before even seeing the specials.

No, but it seems like the issue that people are having with the LGBT jokes is that they seem overly mean-spirited/unfunny. Although you are right that I should hold off on judgement until I watch it myself.

He said that no limits makes comedy great which I really disagree with. Comedy might theoretically have no boundaries but comics certainly confine themselves within limits to relate to the audience. And its ok to point out sometimes when a comic cross a boundary that you don't feel comfortable with. That doesn't mean you want them to burn at the stake. We don't look at Kramer's rant or Don Imus and think well it's ok people really need to get over that. It's rightfully criticized. It's the balance of yes comedians should be able to say as many offensive things as they want, but at a certain point you lose the audience if you don't understnad the subject you are tackling.

I thought that ending was great, I was wondering when he did the story about the producers where he was going because it felt a little weak, but he really did pay i toff.

Someone needs to gif that black guy who's with a girl at about the 17:30 mark on the second stand up. Did you see how he goes from laughing to being really serious?

If a comedian isn't offending someone are they doing their job? I think the idea is that when you're attending a comedian you're supposed to take things in stride and realize they are going to say bad stuff. That doesn't make it acceptable, but that's part of the art form. I like Dave Chappelle, and I think he should probably learn a little more about trans people so he could write jokes that are perhaps a little more tasteful.

Also, if it matters, I'm trans.

Ultimately it comes down to being tasteful, and I might assert that Chappelle ever so slightly missed the mark. He's still a good comedian, and people who laughed are not all of a sudden transphobic.

Wow he does a great job destroying her argument. And then at the end there, hhahahahaha what a dick.

Just finished second one. First half was great. Second half tapered off for me. The jokes people are getting offended by weren't too awful in general, I guess. But the use of the word "tranny" twice was nails on a chalkboard for me. So I suppose thr joke is not terribly offensive (to me), but the word choice itelf is.

Hahahahaha that was so strange. Def on the 2nd special was better than the first crowd, but the first was great as well.

i just want to watch them both again. he is hitting his prime. we have many many great things to come yet from this man.

I'm a little worried at whats to come after all this. After the Jimmy Kimmel interview I feel like he's doing these three netflix specials for the money and getting the fuck out again. lol

Member that time Kramer said he'd hang people from trees?

This ain't like that, is it?

Kramer said that to a black heckler, he wasn't telling jokes. That was real hatred he had. These specials were hilarious, I laughed at all the jokes. Dave Chappelle is one of the best standups of all time. It reeks of hypocrisy that some would never bat an eye when he joked about racist white cops sprinkling crack on a 'nigger' after killing him but he cannot make a joke about how Kanye has two mother-in-laws now etc.

Didn't think either was particularly strong by Chappelle standards, but they were good. I hope he hits his real groove on the 3rd one. Killin' Them Softly is probably one of my all time favorites.

do you blame him? I'm pretty sure he is being slandered as homophobic/transphobic for simply stating something.....Joking about something that is kind of true. Black Americans have been fighting for their rights since before I was born, no one ever attacked black comedians or any comedians for making "unfunny jokes" but in a matter of what feels like 2-4 years, the LGBTQ community drove past them like
giphy.gif
and started this whole "you can make fun of everyone but us" stance.

So yeah I can see him joking about that, I'm sure other minorities could relate to that on a "what about us?" level. If he feels that way he should be able to express it in the only way he knows how.....As a comedian.

Or (this is a radical concept, I know) we can fight for the rights of more than one group at a time? It's called "intersectional feminism".

I don't see that being done, I see "these jokes are ok, but all these other jokes are not ok"

End of the day, Dave, Eddie Murphy, Chris Rock, Jaime Foxx, Eddie Griffin, some comedians are not for everyone but they say what other people are thinking.

He could have put all this material into a sketch with him in high heels playing a "character"

Watched both specials and thought they were hilarious. Just skimming through this thread it isn't difficult to notice a lot of individuals are offended. As with any Chappelle special, that was bound to happen. I think it's okay to be offended, and just because it's comedy doesn't mean you still can't be moved in a negative way by a joke. However, it really does help if you attach a level of ignorance with most of he's jokes, in fact with comedy in general. I didn't even know who Bruce Jenner or Caitlyn Jenner was, I had to Google this stuff for those jokes to actual hold some weight, but I still understood the joke and being ignorant to the topic helped make it digestible. Overall, I thought it was solid.

It's a shame to see this thread take the turn it has taken, really it has. Literally, people can't take a joke anymore. I thought it was gonna be a celebration of all thing Dave Chappelle and folks talking about Evillore making an appearance and the onset it has been that.

This isn't about PC culture, or outrage culture but about certain folks "always having to say somethin" having to scrutinize things under a goddarn microscope and taking shit apart. C'mon w.e. happened to a comedian saying a joke and everyone just laughing. Comedians have always offended someone, but those folks back in the day knew better to make a big hubbub about it, knowing full well it was only a fucking joke.

The problem was that it wasn't funny though. Like 99% was funny. Couple of his shit fell flat.

Yes LGBT people invented "attacking" comedians Lenny Bruce literally getting arrested for obscenity never happened...

Yet somehow you demonize LGBT folk for inventing "attacking" (I'd call what's happening here valid criticism) as if everyone loved comedians unilateraly until Queer folk came alongband ruined it all.

This post also does what Chappelle does erases LGBT folk that are people of color. Black trans women are some of the least protected individuals in society and you can kinda see why... posts like this completely ignore their very existence

Man she came across as a straight moron. Hinting that the status/treatment of black people in America was somehow tied to the proliferation or lack there of racist jokes... I can't even.

And a lot of it wouldn't have been funny
Again, this comes down to opinion, your opinion finds it not funny but I'm sure the audience would have found it funny.

Dave is an artist, this is how he expresses himself. Yes people are allowed to criticize his work, I have no problem with that. But it never just stops at frowning at the routine does it?

That was about what is off limits and what isn't correct? I don't believe anyone has called for no jokes about the LGBT community. The main issue, at least for myself, was that they weren't funny for Dave. He can do better than bottom of the barrel tier shit. He's one of the greatest comics ever, but those jokes were varying degrees of a couple chuckles to painfully unfunny.

Comedy has no limits, but if what you said wasn't funny...some people can and will crticize for unfunny jokes that happened to use words that are not okay now. Dave made a joke using fag, but the thing is that joke was funny.

Again, this comes down to opinion, your opinion finds it not funny but I'm sure the audience would have found it funny.

The people here for the most part have just been criticizing his jokes that weren't that funny.
