The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild |OT2| It's 98 All Over Again

I feel like I just got randomly screwed when doing the
korok trial where you have to trail a korok to a shrine. A wolf randomly spawned on right as he said "I'm almost there", made the korok start running and yell for the hero to save them, so I shot the wolf (still crouched and hidden), the korok stopped and just stood there for 30 seconds, then spun around, looked right at me asking if I was a ghost, and Link stood up like an idiot. Luckily it's not too long to redo, just tedious.
Same thing happened to me. Probably the worst shrine outside of the motion control ones that suck when you're playing in portable mode.

I have six shrines left and I've been roaming around endlessly looking for them. I've done all the Kass ones and pretty sure I've done all the Shrine Quests in general so now it's just a matter of stumbling upon them. And I refuse to use the Shiekah tracker.

Any other game I would have just given up and looked up the locations by now but this is one game where I'm still enjoying just aimlessly wandering over 110 hours into it. Plus, I'm making bank with Korok seeds in the process.

But yeah, I'm thoroughly convinced these last few shrines don't actually exist.
Well, good luck with that. I've already found 3 or 4 that are almost impossible to find without the tracker.

Does anyone else play Zelda soundtrack/playlists on another device while playing Breath of the Wild?

I've started playing the SS OST. I need something to keep me awake while I kill minibosses and hunt for koroks. I may sit down and listen to the BotW OST to see if I think any better of it than I do now. SS took awhile for me to appreciate and now it's one of my favorite scores so it's possible BotW will eventually not feel so ho-hum to me

And that's fine. I totally understand this being people's favorite in the series. I can't deny it's a great game. I'm just saying I personally am pretty disappointed in the dungeons and boss fights. The dungeons were always my favorite part. The main series Zeldas are only like every five or six years so even if they return to good dungeons with the next game it's still a long ass wait for what I crave.

I don't think it dragged the game down because the overworld content definitely more than compensated for it. But "better dungeons" and "more enemy/boss diversity" are definitely at the top of my list for the next game.

- Dungeons should be like Zelda 1 and 2: 1) dangerous, with tons of tough enemies you never encounter in the overworld (and, no, that doesn't mean mini Guardians); and 2) complex, with maze-like corridors and hidden rooms that really encourage you to get and use the map or check out every nook and cranny.

- I'm actually fine with the core enemy roster (although please change the Moblin + Lizalfos designs to be more threatening, a la OoT), but I felt like they needed more minibosses and a couple fully unique enemies for each type of biome (Freezards, Chilfos for icy regions; Dodongos on Death Mountain; etc.). Bosses also shouldn't just be
Ganon with an elemental theme
. Was really hoping to see Zelda 1 bosses reprised in 3D.

- Also, please ditch those forced minigame segments before each dungeon. Just let me find the dungeon the same way I find shrines. I felt like the
Lost Woods
, the labyrinths, Mt Lanayru, and several other shrine-focused areas would have made better dungeon lead-ins than what we got.

I used to, as I have an open world playlist of Zelda music, but i feel it clashes more often than works. I feel only MMs soundtrack captures the right tone. I ended up just leaving it off. That rito music brings a tear to my eye, is that windfall?

So about the sad lack of caves in BOTW:
I'm about a 100+ hours in, and started exploring northwest, last legendary beast area I'm missing. Just discovered the shrine in
Hebra Great Skelleton
and it's been such a cruel reminder of how amazing caves would be in this Zelda iteration. Makes me wish the dlc would be about adding a second layer underneath the main map, giving us tunnels, caves and dungeons to explore.

Is there any way to survive Death Mountain without wearing armor? I'm doing a naked run and I have some fireproof elixirs but they are not powerful enough for certain areas.

3 Fireproof Lizard and 2 Moblin Fang; that will give you a lvl 2 Fireproof Elixir. That will allow you to continue your naked run, enjoy!

I finished the 4 divine dudes now and I gotto say, I didnt like them. The turning mechanic on all 4 is dreadful and annoying and the visuals are very dull. Very boring and not fun to play. Dont do that again please Nintendo!

I've only completed three so far, and really the only standout moments were the ramp-up in music for Vah Medoh once you start moving through the objectives, and the part at the beginning of Vah Rudania when
you're wandering around in the dark
.

Unfortunately neither of these things really has much to do with how fun the dungeons are.

This falls under my complaint with how big the overworld is. Like instead of it being that freaking big I'd rather have something smaller and with that development "leeway" room from not having to work on a world that big you could squeeze in more variety like that. Hyrule Castle suddenly felt like the kind of location I was more interested in exploring and that's at the end of the game.

I guess a better way to put it is that I would prefer it if the ratio between vastness and variety were closed in more.

I so thought that Vah Rudania was going to be something special because of that but nope! Just as crappy, if not worse, than the other 3 dungeons.

Even then (with respect to Vah Rudania)
Typhlo Ruins does that better because it's entirely on you to have your own torch and navigate your way through more of a maze-like forest

welp ran out of battery so I guess I've been playing 3 hours straight :p

Yeah the game is really good. Its also a lot smarter than me, or I just dont have the patience these days (probably a mix of both), as it uses A LOT of environmental clues and puzzles and Im just not good with those, its like sidequests with just pictures of maps in other games, I always hate those lol.

Dont get me wrong, I think its actually great design in Zelda, and for people into this type of stuff, its awesome. For the rest of us, there's google, and that is A-OK.

Case in point, besides the seed stuff, this
bandit treasure
sidequest I just did, I might have eventually figured out the
bridges if by the time I ran into them I hadnt forgotten the clue (and that is a big if), and followed the river, but when I got to the part where you get the seed I would have been stumped, I probably would never notice the little mushroom on top of the waterfall indicating the way to climb.

But like I said, my dumbness does not in any way make me think this is the game's fault, at all. Also, I really like the Shrines, surprise they get so much hate. Now those ARE the type of puzzles I enjoy :p

Weapons wise, maybe because I knew how it worked going in, the weapon breaking isnt bothering me. Im simply not getting attached to any weapon, and ive already gotten a bag full of 16-20 damage weapons quickly (considering I was just using 5-10s just an hour or two ago), so its been fine. The only problem is I tend to always use the weakest weapons to save the best ones for tougher guys, so im technically never using the best ones (because the best ones now will be worse by the time I do use them) heh.

One thing that helped a ton was getting the
clothes from kakariko village and upgrade them at the fairy
, I went from getting 1 shot a lot to actually having a chance now, I had no idea it would make such a difference, thats pretty cool (since theres no leveling afterall, and just more hearts werent really going to help when 1 hit took out 5 hearts earlier).

So thats about it for my 5-6 hours (or whatever I have) impressions. Game seems huge, I feel like I barely scratched the surface. Im digging it tho.

I'm having an issue with getting Kass
into Rito Village
. I've done all of the shrine quests
literally all 42 of them
and I've also completed the
Hero's cache quest
and he still isn't showing up. Any one else have this problem?

Yeah, totally. I was a big fan of the ambiance in Rudania anyway - especially with the eerie glowiness of the Sheikah tech - but conceptually that other area pulled off the idea much better.

You probably solved one of his shrine quests without hearing his song?

Did you look for him in the right place? He is
on the platform highest up in the village, near where the village chief lives.

Did you find his

? I'm not sure if you need to see that first or not...

He appears at a few stables to give you backstory, might need to listen to that once. I know Gerudo Stable is one of the places he hangs out.

At this point I'm purposely NOT completing every shrine I find, so that I'll have something tide me over til the DLC hits.

Korok seeds OTOH I don't dislike, but I also won't be too sad if I don't find them all.

Finished the game with all four beasts down and 90 something shrines. 101 hours played so far, and dearly loved every single minute of it. The problem is I don't want to stop playing, and I have still quite a few sidequests and armor pieces to get. Well, I guess you could call that the opposite of a problem. :)

The final area and boss was slightly underwhelming after seeing it hyped up so much here (I actually prefer most other Zelda's), but it's also true I skipped quite a bit of it using the Zora tunic. This is more or less in tune with the rest of the game: incredible overworld, slightly lacking dungeons. Still good enough to not bring the amazing whole package down by any means.

I love this game so much that I would be perfectly content with this being the only Zelda game this generation on the Switch as long as they continue to breath new life into the world with DLC. If ever there was a game that deserved to continue on like that, if only for a while, it is this one.

I agree, although most of the things I would want for the game, like more enemy variety all along the overworld (Darknuts please) seem like they would not be easily integrated via DLC. On the other hand I fear that a sequel may remove elements I love, which are many, just to feel fresh.

My ideal game would be this, with a lot more underground areas / caves, more numerous and longer dungeons each with unique bosses (not a fan of the X-blight Ganon pattern, especially compared to the usually huge, beautiful, varied and iconic bosses), many more enemy types both in dungeons and the overworld, a few more abilities... and keep pretty much everything else intact. Hell, reuse the map mostly, just add an underworld layer and remix the shrines and Koroks. But this isn't what we're getting with either DLC or a sequel, so...

In any case, my once unshaking faith in the Zelda franchise, rather waning after Skyward Sword, has been more than restored by both A Link Between Worlds and this. I'm happy to let Nintendo take Zelda in whatever crazy direction they want next.

Hero's Cache is the 17 of 24 one right? If so it meant 5pm.

The Hebra one, if you look out from that spot, a big snowy area in the distance is shaped like a bird. If you glide towards it, your perspective adjusts to let you see into a small crack in the mountain where a shrine awaits. Unless you have the sensor on, it'd be extremely hard to just stumble upon.

Ah so I guessed right on the Hero's Cache solution. I thought maybe
it was always there
and I got lucky.

As for the cedar tree, it's pretty easy to stumble upon the solution randomly.
I just glided in the direction the quest told me and happened upon the shrine.

I was just mucking about on the mountains and I found that one accidentally.

About Rudania's Boss:

When I hit phase 2 of the fight, I didn't know what I was supposed to do. The Boss makes that fiery orb, passes it through its shield, then throws it at Link. When this orb hits anything, it explodes in a big area-of-effect. In the meantime, the boss is surrounded in a damage-negating shield.

So my knowledge and understanding of how Zelda bosses work makes me think I'm supposed to shoot the fiery orb when it is part way through the shield. This would make it explode and the explosion damages/staggers the boss. But this doesn't work. It just keeps exploding in mid-air and not affecting the boss.

So I start doing everything I can think of. I see if I can Stasis the orb, or bat the orb back, or parry it, but none of the works. I try hitting the boss with arrows, but that doesn't work either. The ghost of Daruk starts giving me hints like "watch closely as it charges its attack." This just makes me think I should be hitting that fiery orb while its still charging or close enough to hit the boss. I had never been stumped by a boss like this before. Finally, Daruk says "maybe he'd like a bomb snack."

After groaning at how stupid this line was, I threw a bomb just to see what would happen. It magically floats all the way to the boss and hovers right in its face, allowing me to detonate it and stagger the boss.
I was so mad. I thought I was picking up on all kinds of clues and clear telegraphs on how to proceed, but the answer was something completely different that I never would have guessed if not for the incredibly condescending in-game hint.

It's been 24 hours and I'm still annoyed at what the solution ended up being versus what I thought it was.

Oh, so I wasn't the only one! I felt so stupid when the snack line came in....

Having just finished all the Beasts, narratively, Rito first and Gerudo last really works best I think. The way the cutscenes are directed, what you do throughout their stories, as well as the little details in each really seems to fit like that.

For example with Gerudo,
after encountering the Yiga throughout the entire game, including in a handful of sidequests where you deal with their meddling, it seems fitting they're one of the last roadblocks you take down. The cutscenes involving Urbosa really shed light on the conflict of Zelda, which works well after having seen most of the other memories. Plus, she actually makes a mention of Ganon's previously Gerudo form, which is fitting of finally encountering and discovering this great evil in the next, final act.

Rito works in that
obviously, its rather short. However, elaborating on the rivalry of Link and Revali is a good starter to the Champions' story, especially if you found the first memory that plays at this. It effectively shows where some of the doubt comes in as to Link's hero status, as from our perspective, we haven't seen how Link is a proven hero. Revali's scene atop the beast also has a good feel for the end of a first dungeon. The music is absolutely beautiful and rather heartfelt, so Revali's line that Link's job is far from finished resonates rather strongly that the tale is far from over. Resolving their rivalry so early on shows decent character development in Revali accepting his role, and now truly framing Link as a hero.

Eh, may not have worded all this right, but I'm glad I went through the dungeons in the order I did. :p
