NieR: Automata |OT| "I wouldn't expect too much from this game if I were you."

Just started Route C and... You people saying the game only really begins here weren't kidding.

Good lord. I'd normally be more annoyed about a 20 hour prologue, but it was far too interesting and fun to get mad about playing it.
A2's interactions with the pod are amazing early on.

Yup,
she's my favorite character, and they have some Grade A banter.

...come to think of it, I might've. Whoops...

Can you? I thought he was invincible

Edit you goddamn monster

Haha, I'm not sure if I did! If I saw him early enough I didn't realize there were friendly robots I could talk to. I started killing the non-hostile ones outside the carnival area for a few minutes before I realized my mistake.

Uhhhhhhhhh what the hell, I was exploring a bit to complete some stuff and I found a secret area that is fucking enormous what the hellllllllll

Playing this game a second time in PSVR Cinema Mode is really immersive.

The
roller coaster
,
castle in the forest
, and
zoomed out side-scrolling section in the Route A abandoned factory ending
in particular look so spectacular with that simulated movie theater view.

It's worth the added blurriness in the text. And the game's menus don't get enough credit for how stylishly minimalistic yet functional they are. Very MGS3-esque.

This game is everything I wanted FFXV to be. Flashy but not autopilot combat, gripping story that juxtaposes epic stakes with small character moments, and a consistent confidence in its own identity.

Now please commission Platinum to remake the first NieR so that I can play it on modern hardware.

About to go to the
forest
.

I think you can get there: (minor location spoiler)
in the big crater in the city, there's a big ol' drain pipe that you can walk right into. It takes you to the Flooded City. I caught a mackerel there in the second big pool.

Or you can just wait, since I think you go there soon.

Cleared Route B. No active quests or red dots at the time I finished it. I spent way more time on this game today than I planned.

When I was about midway through the route, I was pleased, but not that impressed with it. While the touch is lighter, it felt a little bit like the original Nier's B side. That not only makes it less surprising, but I also find that part of the game kind of shallow, looking back. That part of the original beats you over the head with a message that already came through with some clarity the first time through.

But I really like where it went after the "point of no return".
Even though I suspected the twist behind the origins of the YoRHa project, something about the delivery made the implications of it hit home really strongly. I feel like the game is following through on the very heavy questions it raises, and that's super exciting. And the trailer for C/D... Wow.

I was liking the game before, but now I'm starting to see how it could get the Metacritic average it has.

Chapter C midway-ish spoilers
Alright, the fight with pseudo-Eve and the memories showing up in the hacking world, now that's what I'm talking about.

Also I love the dialogue the robot gives in those doors that lead to nowhere. "I will, NAY I must self-destruct" is incredibly comical for me.

The only 'secret' place I've found is in the
desert area. Is there another place?

Finished Routes A-E. Wow, what a rollercoaster! I think that might have been the most complex, philosophically sophisticated, and heart-wrenching story of any game that I've ever played! My main complaints would be that hacking gets really old pretty fast and that the side quests are, mechanically, very meh. They really should have made most hacks automatic (perhaps making the time you need to hold down the button longer to increase the chance that you get interrupted) and kept the mini-game for important hacks.
I definitely did not hate A. My apprehension is probably more towards how completely cold it left me. Like, I'm not itching to find out more about the game because of anything inherent to its storytelling thus far; I only feel that way because of what everyone else has said about the other routes. If I'd played this game in a vacuum, seen credits, and had that "oh hey btw there are other routes" message show up, I genuinely don't know if I'd want to. The game has just so thoroughly failed to get me invested in its characters. I feel like I'm missing something. 2B and 9S have such bland characterization so far, and I barely feel like I know anything about them aside from "glum and disaffected" and "bright and optimistic."
Here's how I would rate the different routes:
Route A - 8/10 - Seemingly just a bit better than your standard video game story with some emotional highlights and philosophical exploration into tribalism, what it means to be human, and purpose. Seemingly budding romance between 2B and 9S in the short time that they've known each other.
Route B - 9/10 - Wait, what's going on? I've seen this all before but things are taking on a different context. The veil on the story gets pulled back to give you a peek at what lies beneath the surface.
Route C onward - 11/10 - ....

Seriously, if you need to, just skip all of the tedious but thematically good side quests and critical path to Route C.

Just finished ending c, and I have a question

What do I do now? I tried loading the save I made after finishing it, and it just started the game again from the beginning

I just completed Route C. I'm not exactly sure what happened.
I picked A2. Did she get rid of 9S' virus or what? And what did she even do at the end? How did she make the tower crumble?

Wait till ya see what's at the end of it.

Oh damn indeed. Know what I'm wearing the rest of the game on 9S.

Also, something that's undersold is that 9S' voice-acting for the Picture Book scenes is INCREDIBLY good and subtle. The one about each having a different shape was haunting.

Is this possible to do or am I going to severely under-level myself?
I didn't actually try this but, being a completionist, I significantly over-leveled the whole game which made most encounters trivially easy (on normal difficulty). Even if you're under-leveled, you can just change the difficulty at any time.

Dat feel when you can't wait to go home and play the game and you go home but you still can't lol. Too hot in my country now with 43 degree celsius heat and with my broken ac I don't want to risk damaging my console.

I stopped playing right after the demo area yesterday. The scenes right after those made me emotional. Can't wait to cry my eyes out for this game.

Still playing the first route, 14h in, have got the
K ending (mackerel ending)
and T ending (suicide by chip ejecting ending)
and I still not had that "Aha!" moment where I fall in love with the game like NieR. Maybe because I already played the prequel ?

The game's sidequests became a lot more tolerable once fast travel is unlocked though. I hope to god I don't have to redo them after ha ha.

So is this game just brutal on hard or am I doing something wrong? On route C and some of these fights... death city. 1-2 hit kills type of stuff.

That's how it felt to me, but I'm a huge Godzilla fan.
Giant monsters coming from the sea isn't exclusive to Godzilla, but it also breathed fire.

Are the
giant Emil heads
a reference to
Planets of the Apes
?

Upgrade your weapons all the way and find out ;)

Is the extremely long stair in the first city buildng a reference to MGS3?

I got the same vibe. My GF even laughed and said "What a trilll..." to me as I climbed.

My answers in bold.

The sea machine looked like a Duncleostus to me.

Quick question on starting 2nd playthrough:
I've just gotten back into the hub system (city-desert-etc) and it seems like it's just a different perspective? Does it mix things up besides introducing cool mechanics via the hacking minigame or is it basically just Camera Two on the same events?

Not sure if anyone has run into this, but on route C,
when I get to the top of the recovery unit in the forest using 9S, the game seemingly glitches. After defeating the 4 robots at the top he just was to the center "core" and nothing happens, he just...stands there

There are additional context to some key scenes, and other than that, think of the times in Route A when 9S is not with 2B

So does shit start getting super real on the 3rd playthrough? Or is 9S's story actually really cool too?
