PS4 Rest Mode is the worst - can I just disable it?

I've always had issues with rest mode on my PS4, it barely works for me so I just stopped using it. 75% of the time it would just shut down altogether but require a database rebuild upon reboot, then shut down again, then reboot so I gave up.

But now when I simply ask my PS4 to turn off (with the actual power button) it invariably goes into rest mode when I don't even want it to. And not a-single-orange-LED rest mode but fan-constantly-whirring-clearly-using-a-pointless-amount-of-power rest mode.

It's a constant pain, it barely works when I want it to and often works when I don't. It's quite literally worse than useless to me.

Can I just disable it altogether somehow?

TL:DR: Sony fucked rest mode on PS4 and it's frankly embarrassing how broken it is. Please just let me turn it off entirely.

Sounds like you've got a good case for a warranty replacement. That's broken, no doubt. But it's also the first I've ever heard of such problems.

My rest mode works fine, aside from the PSVR breakout box not shutting down.

Xbox One's instant-on mode is way jankier than this.

Yes you can disable rest mode, it's in the power saving settings.

There's clearly something wrong with your PS4, but, you can disable rest mode. Go into the power saving menu, go to Set Features Available, and switch them all off. You will no longer be able to go into rest mode at all.

Your PS4 is the problem. Rest mode works fine on all 3 PS4s in the house.

You can:

1- Start PS4 in safe mode. Reinstall system software. See if that fixes your problem.

2- Hold the PS button on your controller, and select "power off" instead of rest mode or hitting the power button on the PS4.

Do a full power off. I think your electric outlet might be faulty or maybe it's your surge protector if you're using it. It'll suddenly turn off and do rebuild database if it loses power from the socket. That only happens to me when we suddenly lose power in the house.

get your ps4 fixed because that is definitely not normal. I use rest mode 99% of the time and I've never had any issues with it.

in fact it is my most loved feature from this generation since I can always pause and resume any time, even mid mission/cutscene whatever and save tons of time on boot up!

back to your problem: if you don't want to use it you can simply shut down the ps4 with the controller and if I remember correctly you can turn it off from going into stand by in the options menu?

I had similar issues because of Stardew Valley, it was causing rest mode to crash and the OS to bug out. 4.50 fixed those issues though. I believe Doom also caused those same issues. If you have either game, delete them both and restart. If not, contact Sony.

Like everyone else has said, I think there is something wrong with you PS4 if you're still under warranty get it fixed ASAP.

Had the same problem, rebuilding the database helped in my case.

I guess I traded in a broken ps4 to GameStop judging by the replies in this thread because mine did this too with the rebuilding BS, I judged held the button and did a complete shut off :S

My power button is basically an RNG at this point: press and hope, see what happens. I gave up trying to use it for what it was meant for long ago, ironically now that I'm actively avoiding this "feature" it's actually more of a pain than when it was just a poorly implemented option.

How did they fuck this up so bad? It's standby mode for fuck's sake, it's not curing cancer.

Jumping on the," your console is borked train". Rest mode is God mode. I can't live without it. From the sounds of it. The stuff that's going on with your console isn't typical. Get it checked asap.

Like... Why are you even turning your PS4 off with the button on the console. There's a button on the controller for it. What are you doing?

Never had a problem with rest mode myself, it's a blessing in disguise.
I don't even remember the last time I turned my PS4 off, sans reboots for firmware upgrades.

You should check yours.

This is not a common issue. Your PS4 is defective. If it's still under warranty, you should send it in to Sony for repair.

Did you read any of the posts in here? Lol

It's either your PS4 needs repairs or you have power issues in your house

You can just press "turn off PS4" instead of using rest mode when switching it off if it's giving that much trouble

You should be deeply concerned with the state of your machine and either replace it or have it repaired.

Sleeping and waking from rest mode should be a seamless experience. For everyone else, it is.

This isn't the feature or Sony, this is a problem with your machine that is operating in some tragic state of partial failure.

It's your system. Plain and simple. They didn't fuck anything up, it's just that your system is fucking up.

If you wanna do a full shut down use your controller. It's not that hard.

Lol wtf are you on about? They didn't fuck up so bad, it works fine. Your console isn't working like it's supposed to.

Your PS4 is broken. How many different ways can we say it?

You're still implying that this is a problem all PS4s have after a dozen responses to the contrary.

Your PS4 has a problem. Get it checked.

Rest mode works fine for the rest of us.

I don't think there is anything wrong with my PS4, that's a weirdly specific issue if so. It works fine otherwise.
Hold PS button -> Power -> Turn Off PS4

I don't see the issue...

Keep PS button pressed --> Power --> Turn Off PS4

You need a new PS4 bruv.

And the turn off PS4 option is right there in front of you lol.

I know how to turn it off with the controller, just sometimes I decide I want to turn it off when I'm standing right next to it.

I feel like I keep getting notices that my PS4 "unexpectedly turned off", when I boot the console. I little bar comes up to reboot but it doesn't take too long.

I don't know what happens.

I find the feature useless compared to my other console.

Never had any problem with rest mode. Sometimes i leave it in rest mode and when I know i am not going to be doing any gaming for more than 1 week, i completely turn it off.

No issues here.

Man, I love rest mode. So quick and easy, plus let's you buy games online and get home to them already downloaded.

Only thing I'll never ever ever ever ever understand is why trophies will not auto-sync once per day when my PS4 is in rest mode.

My Vita does it. Heck my PS3 doesn't even have a rest mode and it does it.
