Shoot the Core! - Gaf Shoot ‘em Up (aka Shooter/SHMUP) Reference Thread

I've been considering a budget PC build to run on my cabs, to try to get stuff like dualscreen Dariusburst or Crimzon Clover working. What minimum specs should I be looking at? Any other PC games I should consider while I'm at it?

I need to get a budget PC as well. If you find out any pointers let me know. Just need to drive some 55" HDTVs I bought last year specifically for the game. But I have no idea what to buy that does dual HDMI out.

Honestly, I think it'll be kinda tough to build a PC with modern parts that would be underpowered for those games. Just about anything with a dedicated video card will be far more than enough. If you start looking into small-form pre-builds with Intel video things get a little riskier but you might still be fine.

As far as software goes, those two games are probably the best options on Steam when it comes to unique ones or best versions, but there's always the doujin library to dig into for novelty's sake. Stuff like Blue Wish Resurrection, Warning Forever, Touhou, Kamui, etc.

The last thing I built (a replacement HTPC for parents) used a 5370 APU. Would that count? lol

What are everyone's favorite cute-'em-ups? I love the Twinbee series and Harmful Park, but Parodius is my favorite SHMUP series, and Sexy Parodius is my favorite SHMUP ever. Looking for more stuff in a similar vein to play.

Trouble Witches Neo on Xbox 360 is surprisingly good. I revisit it every other time I have the 360 running. So it might be worth looking into the Steam variant (I can't vouch for it directly though).

Unfortunately I don't think Neo is available anymore. Every variant of Trouble Witches buyable today are closer to the original.

For the best experience I think of buying that ASUS monitor for shmups since you can rotate it 90 degrees.
Are there any cheaper monitors with that feature?

I bought one of these in 2010 for my VH236H and it's still reliable.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OGau-fbIRlE Just judging by this (couldn't find benchmarks after a quick look), I think you might have trouble with dual-display HD DariusBurst with that.

Under Defeat.

I keep comin back to it after finding it a few years ago. I'm currently playing the HD digital version on the PS3.

Looks fun, but I don't see how this is a cute-'em-up from the footage I saw. Thank you though.

Might as well mention, Mamorukun Curse! The game is really cute and fun to play.

Cool, thanks. I like the unique scrolling. Gotta say though, I really miss the sprite-art days of '80s and '90s SHMUPs over the polygonal fare we get a lot of now. :/

Game Paradise (Saturn version). An ode to old arcade games and shmups, with 2 main leads and 2 bosses draining your tetosterone levels

Oh yeah, this is definitely more my speed. Looks great.

Another recommendation for Trouble Witches. Must be pretty good!

Well I was just messing around, trying different scanline settings, and when I tried switching my set to 4:3, it didn't look right either.

was kidding about the credits =)

just brings back some bragging memories:
that was the bragging rights around the neighborhood... every shooter that had bombs: raiden, twin cobra, tiger-heli, you weren't considered the legit unless you can beat bosses without bombs. (until you died and lose full power, then everyone spammed that bomb button)

as for continuing... no one did at the arcades. everyone considered it a waste of a quarter. everyone wanted to start their own game fresh.

the only games that people continued were games like Smash TV and Gauntlet (quarter munchers). but all shooters were considered a one credit thing.

Did anyone ever play Halley's Comet? there was this guy who had insane instincts and can flip that game 3 times in one quarter. he had such a high score that the ice cream parlor(local arcade) posted his score above the machine for anyone to beat. was the most amazing tate shmup player i've ever seen.

Finally spent a few hours with Danmaku Unlimited 3. I was a bit iffy on it at first coming off of DU2, but I quickly came around on it. Now my favourite in the series.

Gundemonium Recollection is one of the first to push me into SHMUPs and remains the only cute-em-up that I actively return to.

I'm a massive fan of the Twinbee games and also Harmful Park. I can't really say for certain as it really does depend on what sort of mood that I'm in but Mars Matrix has always occupied a special place for me although I could never really explain to anybody why that is, it just is.

I love Galloping Ghost and have been there more than a few times, but having held a "world record" in Ikaruga, I know those aren't true world records. My score at the time would have been a joke compared to anyone who actually played the game even remotely seriously. It seems that they only keep track of scores posted on Aurcade.com.

Here's Aurcade's Ikaruga high score list showing me ranked #4 without even hitting 5mil points lol

yeah... I've been #1 in Progear since 2014 (beat my old score again in 2015) and it's kind funny sitting at 14mil when actual high scorers in the scene hit 175-220mil with a 2-ALL.

#4 in dodonpachi too XD

definite twin galaxies approach as tain mentioned.

Speaking of GG, I just took my son there last week and the place has gotten out of control. So many games!

Any time I see good ol' Thunder Force mentioned I also think of the obscure Blast Wind. Never a great game yet I really liked it, relatively simple vertical scroller. Also probably not a coincidence that my overall Saturn favorite was Batsugun.

I haven't been back since last June but will be going again this June and I've heard they basically bought out the next door space, knocked down the wall, and keep introducing monday "mystery" games onto their floor. I'm super excited to go back soon.

the only thing that I haven't liked about the layout is that the shooting section is in that little back room where the temperature gets WAY too hot.

Finally got the Darius 30th set in. It is a love letter to the series and wonderfully created. And the special physical disc of Darius comes with a special extra selection on the menu screen to pick a version with pretty arcade overlays like the original. Very very cool.

Fuck, that's awesome. Stupid question - is the PS4 region locked? I want this.

PS4 is not region locked, only DLC is.

But if you create an account in the region that the store is for the DLC and make your PS4 the main PS4 for that account as well, I believe you can get the DLC and use it on your main PS4 account (I could be wrong but I think that is what folks have said in the SRW V thread).

Well it's all moot anyway. The Darius collection seems to be sold out everywhere. I'll wait for it to restock or a US release.

You can do that, but it's still technically region-locked. So if you buy a game from Japan, you still have to buy the DLC from JPSN. Primary consoles do, indeed, share content in that way.

there's someone reputable who has a bunch that are selling for $230 shipped with the cup/towel, but it's from a place that a lot of people here despise :O

I'll keep an eye out. I recently found a relatively "cheap" copy of the Thunder Force Gold Pack 2 so that should keep me busy for a while.

To be fair, the disc of the Darius for PS4 is really only like 15% of the box set. Really is mostly a gorgeous set of audio OSTs and a very well done super play of a few of the games. The physical is just a nice little bonus.

I shared this awhile back in RetroGAF and forgot about this thread. I figure posters in here would appreciate it. Years back I kept a smaller CRT on it's side for vertical shooters, and eventually because of various reasons that just stopped working out. I finally managed to get a wall mount that fixed the lack of tate mode in my life.

Sorry for the delayed double post for folks who already saw it.
