Sony Playstation: First Party Studios & their Current Projects

Wow us with Sucker Punch's game like they did with Horizon and unleash a barrage of footage and dates. Also a third party bomb of some sort (Devil May Cry).
Yeah.

Sucker Punch new IP as the first party highlight, From Software revealing a new IP and Devil May Cry as the big new announcements and then show gameplay and release dates at the same pace as last year. Back to back haymakers.

This makes way more sense than something like going back to the Order.

Socom could fill that "Games as a Service" void Sony has in their lineup. An addictive multiplayer game they could continually update with maps, cosmetics, etc
This is my biggest criticism of Sony's 1st party lineup right now, they could definitely add a few more multiplayer focused games to their portfolio.

SOCOM and Warhawk would be perfect. They're both pretty unique multiplayer experiences and have strong dedicated communities. Warhawk remastered for PS4 as a F2P game with cosmetics as the moneymaker. Or maybe have the full game for like $20-30 (along with consistent updates) and a F2P version that features one map or something, similar to how they had the demo for the original.

Sony's first party isnt trying to compete with the biggest games on its own platform, its primary purpose should be to diversify its lineup and separate PS4 from Xbox.

It seems like Sony gives their dev teams alot of creative freedom, and they seem to prefer single player games for the most part. Also keep in mind, Sony just put out its 2nd biggest game of the gen so far (Horizon) and it got outsold by Wildlands, a "meh" Ubisoft game that isnt even one of their big fall games. Sony should not try to compete with EA/Ubisoft/Activision, it would work out badly for them.

Thank god for that.

I think most of the exclusive PS4 games are known so far. The only studio whose project is unknown is Sucker Punch. Do you think Sony will focus on showing gameplay of the announced titles or they can still wow us with more unannounced projects?

Japan Studio, Manchester Studio, PixelOpus, London Studio?

I have a sneaking suspicion SOCOM is coming. I don't think Shu brings it up the way he did a few years ago if they weren't atleast thinking about it. People are always asking for it so I think it's just a matter of time at this point. I wonder who will make it though.

They will wow us either way :) Some awesome set piece/boss fight from GOW, gameplay from Spider man, more creative ways to kill/use the hoard in Days Gone, ni no kuni 2, dreams, detroit gameplay, release dates.... another awesome, weird, cryptic Death Stranding trailer which internet people will then keep on analyzing frame by frame for months....greatness!! Sucker Punch's game and any other new announcement is just bonus.

I also think from First Party studios there is not much left to reveal. Not complaining but why are there lesser games this gen compared to PS3 era from first party studios? Developing games on PS3 architecture was more complex, wasnt it? ND released UC1,2,3 & Tlou...so two new IPs, compared to what they have this gen, and i think they dint had two teams for most of that gen, SSM had GOW3 & Ascension and did a lot of collaboration work on games like Journey, Unfinished Swan...

Sorry for OT, but is there a similar thread where third party games coming this gen are discussed? Like what's Rocksteady upto after Arkham Knight, will Cyberpunk be released this gen?

Imagine if at PSX 2017 Shawn Layden walks out wearing a Socom t shirt.

Honestly, I think if they just focused on stuff that's already announced it would still be a great show: God of War, Days Gone, Final Fantasy VII Remaster, GT Sport, Crash Bandicoot Remaster, 2 Knack 2 Furious, Wild, Spider-Man, Shenmue 3, etc. If we get a lot of gameplay for these and some release dates I personally would still think that would be a very solid show. EDIT - and Matterfall, and any third-party reveals that could be there.

Wow us with Sucker Punch's game like they did with Horizon and unleash a barrage of footage and dates. Also a third party bomb of some sort (Devil May Cry).

Yeah, I can see them having another big third-party Japanese exclusive there, like Nioh or Nier or Persona 5. It has been more than 4 years since Itsuno finished Dragon's Dogma and I can see his next project being ready for announcement this year. EDIT - actually, it's been 5 years since Dragon's Dogma first released!

It might be a 'meh' game critically, but it's still a major release from one of the biggest third-party publishers out there in an established series. Plus, you're talking about UK numbers and I don't think we've got numbers from the rest of the world.

Japan Studio, Manchester Studio, PixelOpus, London Studio?

Japan Studio probably won't have anything ready for release again before 2019, I reckon. They've just released two games and have another one for later this year. I know they're fairly big, but three projects within 12 months is busy for a studio of any size.
Manchester Studio are only 2-3 years old I believe, and we might see whatever they're working on next year. We know they've been formed to make PSVR games.
It has been almost 3 years since PixelOpus' last game, Entwined, and I think that was an "available now!" announcement at E3 a few years ago. Assuming they are working on a similar-sized game right now, I could see their next game getting a similar announcement & release at E3 this year.
London Studio made a couple of the PSVR games which launched last year, I believe. They're not such a big development team any more and I can see them maybe having one more game before the generation is over, but we'd be looking at a 2019 release.

On TLOU2's state of readiness thing...

Honestly, it's hard to say. Thing is, ND was one of the most efficient and fast-paced studios last gen, what's with them releasing games on a 2-year cycle consistently.

Obviously, current gen stuff take longer in average and we haven't seen what a full dev cycle from ND looks like yet in earnest.

Uncharted 4's reboot was the one that severely affected the overall sense of how fast their current-gen production pipeline looks like, because parts of the game went back to pre-production, some parts of it are more matured than others, etc etc.

Like, from what we know; Uncharted 4 effectively took 2 years from "start" to finish, if we assume that Neil/Bruce's takeover of the project marked the start of the development. That is a relatively quick turnaround for a project but as said, we have zero visibility of how much stuff was kept from Amy's vision and how much was scrapped.

Assuming, that development was smooth as butter and all ideas Neil Druckmann had from conception-to-readiness-to-develop for TLoU2 is not wasted time, TLoU2 probably had ~6 months of pre-production in some shape or form before work had to be put on hold for UC4.

UC4 shipped in May, and Neil/co went straight back to work on TLoU2. That is another potential 6 months of work for 2016.

If we assume that by ND's standards of what it means to be early in development, it's not weird if they're planning to hit end 2018, giving the game a full 2.5 years of development time.

Again, it depends on how much of ND's pace of development carried forward to current gen.

TLOU2 is the real test of whether or not ND is still the most efficient devs this gen in terms of consistently releasing great games on a short dev cycle.

yup

Just noticed that Sony has a very real chance of releasing an exclusive a month for all of 2017.

Jan - Gravity Rush 2
Feb - Horizon
Mar - MLB The Show
April - Drawn to Death, Starblood Arena (PSVR)
May - Farpoint (PSVR)
June - WipEout Omega Collection

With plenty of others left to be dated. Quite an impressive run.

And they also distributed Team Ninja's Nioh in February, plus PaRappa on April 4th. Definitely a busier beginning of the year for them, and I'm used to them usually releasing a decent amount of games early.

Making games with all the technical bells and whistles you'd expect these days is enormously time and money consuming. You could release a game in two years last gen, this gen it's often 3 to 4 years. I don't mind, there is more than enough to play these days and the quality is generally high.

As for Cyberpunk, I expect a late 2018 / early 2019 release.

how many years this game is in actual development , 3??
in op it says 3+ , i think there maybe 50% chances it will make this august.

2017 at all is too early. The impression I got from E3 last year is that Days Gone is further out than God of War, Dreams and Detroit. Pretty sure we were told not to assume a 2017 release.

Last Bend game was Uncharted Vita in 2011. If the rumors are true, they prototyping ideas on Vita like inFamous. So let's say they started development on Days Gone in 2013. They are nearly 4 years in development, I think the game should be set to release whitin the year.

Not sure if will be this year though.

I can get a source in a bit, but I remember an interview with Colin Moriarty and he asked them if it was 2017 and they said something to the affect of "it is not safe to assume 2017" and then quickly clarified that they were "aiming" for 2017.

Either way, I honestly thought it WOULD be out sooner than those that you listed. They showed the game twice for good lengths of time if I remember correctly (one story trailer and then the longer game-play trailer to close the show). If it were further out, I would think they would just go with the story trailer only.

Bend isn't a very big studio. I think they have less than 100 people. So they may need more time than a typical 200-person AAA studio would need, especially for an open-world game.

I honestly was expecting Destiny's gameplay reveal to be at Sony's E3 conference, but now that that's happening on May 18th, it really makes me wonder whether this was entirely an activision decision or whether Sony had something else in store for the conference and did not want to put aside a lot of time for Destiny on stage. Either way, there will probably still be a trailer with exclusive DLC/beta available now text.
OP forgot to mention "Wild" from Michel Ancel. I wonder what happened to that title. I hope nothing like Deep Down.
Some screenshots were posted on instagram a couple of months ago with the game looking a lot better graphically than it did at its reveal, still being worked on (so far at least) and Michel said that we'll be hearing about it a lot more often IIRC.

I didn't know this so I guess it makes sense. Ah well, Uncharted and GT Sport will have to do for the rest of 2017. Still hoping for Detroit though.

It's still possible that it comes out this year, but I wouldn't be surprised if it's a 2018 game. Plus it's generally not a good idea to release a new IP in the Fall among all the heavy hitters. Sony has marketing deals for Red Dead 2, Battlefront 2, COD, and Destiny 2. They probably don't even need to release a first party game and be just fine this Fall.

The only one that matters tbh
Yep, looking forward to it because of the potential compared to the first game.

In this case do you really need to ,Think? It's like the Call of duty parts, it just has to be there.
Of course. Just a figure of speech in response to the person saying it might not be there.

Edit - Well, not really a figure of speech but I just used "think" for whatever reason lol.

Just seen an article on PSU.com about a possible Days Gone August 2017 release date. It says after the Destiny 2 retailer leak, a possible leak from Gamesonly.at (via Gamezone) states that the Days Gone release date will be 22 August, 2017.

Crazy if true, that would add to the already epic 2017 PS4 line up and if Days Gone and God of War actually make 2017, then it could be one of the best PlayStation line up's of all time.

I still think God of War has an outside shot at 2017. "Soon but not 2016" is what Barlog said last year.
I agree.

With it being playable from beginning to end in Dec 2016, I think there is a real shot for GoW inbSept or October, and it will likely be the star at E3.

I think a schedule lime the following is possible for the rest of 2017 to avoid high profile PS tied titles to bump into each other

Sept (early): Gran Turismo Sports
Sept (late): Destiny 2
October (early): God of War
October (late): Battlefront 2
November(early): Call of Duty WWII
November (late): Red Dead Redemption 2
December (Early): Dreams Beta (or full game if Beta during summer)

I think it'll probably be tied to XB this year, but I could see this year's AC releasing in between COD and RDR2.

Yeah, we definitely would have seen/heard more of Days Gone if it was coming this year, especially if it was this summer.

I also think that of the big games we saw at E3, God of War is the most likely candidate to come out this year, if Sony are comfortable with putting it out late in the year (which they may not be). But who knows.

I actually think Sony may be better off if they don't release any 1st party games this Fall except for GT Sport. They have marketing deals with Destiny 2, COD, Red Dead 2, and Battlefront 2. If they release special edition PS4 bundles with any or all four of those giant games PS4 will easily win the Holidays.

I'd be really surprised by that, the videos that they've shown of the game have been no more than tech demos and didn't really show any gameplay. That would generally be a sign that the game is a long way off, it looked very good but it did also look very early.

...?

What they've shown of Days Gone is not a tech demo. It was a straight up gameplay demonstration.
