when will you watch kemono no aware friends
I'll put it above Utena in the pile.

I challenge Firehawk to finish Utena
See above!

Depends.

We're about to go into a season where we're getting another work from the writer of Oreimo, anime strike continues to exist and has licensed some good shows, and Berserk season 2 is only days away.

Does that qualify as terrible?
The twist
is that it was never NOT terrible!

Ah, I kid. :p

Only way to find out is to do the :firehawk challenge!
I'm sure there's a youngster here who has the will, ambition, and lack of self-worth to watch every single anime this season! I pass the torch on to the next generation! lol
---

Scum's Wish / Kuzu no Honkai ended up being an okay series for me after being so enthralled with it at the beginning. I think I ended up becoming tired of the self-narration because it just stopped being introspective and became expository, but I appreciated how it all ended. Perhaps the only thing that's a little convenient is that the adults are the ones who basically find a compromise, perhaps out of naivete rather than some kind of actual enlightened sexual attitude, and the teens are allowed to move on with their lives because they're young and will have second, third, fourth, fifth, etc chances.

I was most worried about Sanae, since that part of the love polygon was spoiled on wikipedia, but for the most part that turned out fine... or at least as fine as something like that can turn out in a Japanese context.

Probably the one strange thing that I feel is worth talking about is just how sex is depicted in the show - yeah, it's consensual, but almost all of the sex scenes are based on some form of emotional coercion and inevitably one of the people involved end up just being passive objects to be consumed by the other person. I'm glad that sex isn't some kind of weird holy grail thing that most anime treats it as, but I still find it somewhat amusing that, based on what I've watched anyway, B Gata H Kei from like 10 years ago is still the most sex-positive anime that I've seen.

For shiggles, and since it's being fansubbed, I scrubbed through some of the Jdrama version of the show and it's literally a carbon copy. Except it manages to not look at as good because of the usual Japanese production issues (namely the lighting). The sex also ends up being more awkward since it's literally just one actor laying there like a dead fish while the other actor climbs on top of them. lol
I'm going to assume the combination of Japanese idols not being able to have any kind of sex in their roles + Japanese censorship is what makes it tame, even by the rather PG nature of the anime.

Wouldn't Scum's Wish qualify as :firehawk?

Also holy shit, when was the last time I posted in here?!
Yes, I would say it is, particularly the ending!

But the firehawk challenge is to watch at least the first episode every single show, even the ones that don't get licensed, of a season. Although I suppose which season you choose to do it will change its difficulty. lol

First you betrayed Yoshida then you betrayed Kobayashi...
Isn't she only in one episode??

That moment when you catch up to a series and the latest episode part 1 of a double episode.
Anyway, very funny episode, but mostly set up for the next one.
Nice to get some pay of for some of the earlier episodes as well.

Like 3-4!

Sword Art Online Abridged - 11 - Season Finale
It's finally out you guys!

Definitely worth the wait.

The way Kayaba explained why he set up a death game was on point with Mother's Basement's video explaining why it's a bad game. I did wish it had a better explanation of how Asuna and Kirito survived from the deathblow.

The only thing I want to see in the ALO arc is for SWE to
pull a DBZ Abridged where they abruptly resolve it early like with the Garlic Jr. Saga.

Yeah like 5-6 minutes of flashbacks in the beginning....

but I assume 13.5 was recap (I'll watch this later) and this was meant to ease people into the second season without having seen the first show.. Backgrounds are still sad but feels like the character art and animation was markedly improved especially compared to the flashbacks to the first season. Show felt a lot better after the eyecatch so here's hoping.

Chaos; Child 12

I cannot believe that this entire fucking set up has been done as a way from his friend to give the MC a hard case to solve so that he can appear to be a hero.
ALL THOSE PEOPLE FUCKING DIED FOR THAT!? HOLY SHIT WHY DID I WASTE MY TIME WATCHING THIS!?
Yeeeeep. Pretty dumb. The twist isn't helped at all by slamming so much of it into the final episode, giving so little time for anyone to process all of it.

My Hero Academia Season 2, Episode 1:

Yea, wow, that was a recap episode worthy of TOEI or Studio Harriott and no that isn't a good thing at all. I suppose there was enough new material to set up the next arc to make this episode worth watching at least but otherwise, yea, this sucked on toast.

Good god, I thought we got a recap episode to get things started faster, but between the flashbacks juggling and the first 5 minutes retelling the setting and what happened on the last episode, this was really an awful way to start the second season.

Anyway, if someone liked the first season, they will likely like this one too, perhaps even more. It's more or less the same show, for better or worse. The animation seemed toned up and the characters more vibrant, but I think I'll have to see more of this to be sure.

Oh, and they basically adapted 1.5 chapter. There's no way they'll reach that arc. Seems like more than half of the season will be the Sports Festival, haha...

Oh good, One Piece anime adaptation levels, that always works out well.

A decent start, even if not too much happened.
Learning Ochako motivation was pretty neat.

It's not even 1.5 chapters as far i can see, it's just pure chapter 22 with flashbacks and anime original scenes making almost 100 % of the first half. So we might still get a respectable 2ch per ep later on but any notion of going past Stain or maybe exam arc seems very unrealistic.

That beginning was an unfortunate combination of a S1 recap and the chapter itself shortly going over the villain alliance attack and analyzing it, which makes for a rather slow start.
Second half felt like it found its groove and was great. I love how Iidas gestures are animated, lol.
This was 1 chapter + a good amount of anime original classmate interactions in there, which I found pretty nice.

Overall character art and animation looks much better, backgrounds still aren't anything noteworthy.

And yeah folks, this isn't going to end at *that* point, that's S3 material.

There were 3-4 minutes of recap, 1 minute of awesome anime original and everything else was adapted perfectly from the manga. Don't get what's wrong with that if they only do it in episode 1. There even was some foreshadowing in the recap.
Rest of the episode was a great adaption of the manga and I don't mind if they do 2 chapters per episode if the quality stays this high. Next ep will already have plenty of action

My Hero academia S2 ep.1 AKA AOTY 2017

Wow....this first episode! Everything to start to finish was sooooooooooooooooo good! And it had like 5 minute of recap! BUT WOW!
First just with how the show introduction starts, with a lone Deku standing alone as a last hope before a huge group of villain in a dark environment. This was for me such a cool call back to him saying at the start of season 1 that this was the story of how he became the greatest hero. From him standing up to activating OfA to the villain running toward him...just that first minute got my blood pumping!
BUT THEN...if things weren'T enought the OP starts and OMG. This screamed to me shit is going to go down so much. From starting on a shot of All Might jumping in the background to seeing each character strech to prepare for the grand day and then cut to the tournament stating with Deku and Todoroki. Then the wuick shot of All Might landing and seeing everyone rapidly...this was great.(Damn you dimming!)

Queue the episode. Little flashback starts, but the way they handle it imo was great. The extra anime scene with Deku in his room showing how he personnaly himself deal with the huge event that just came to past was very well done. While short it showed what I appreciate the most out of MHA the SoL part of every character. Him watching All Might on his computer, while doing some weight training to get his thoughts together was on point. Income his cute Mom calling him for supper and both of them exchanging a smile. Small detail, but what a great family.
As for the rest of the episode it was mostly character animation, but everything about them made me smile. Every single one of them has such expressive animation. All Might writing to someone? teases us for things to come. How they handle the Tomura incident identifying him as a the man-child and All Might be scared about a possible mastermind. Then the students themselves....What a fun bunch! From Iida weird little entry, Jirou making fun of Kaminari, Tsuyu slapping Mineta so fast as he was about to make a dirty comment, Ochako suddenly becoming so serious and Okiro making obvious comment to invisible girl. Their intreraction are so lively! I love it.
Follow that up with the cutest baby Ochako ever, to All Might acting like a young school kid and asking Midoriya for lunch. Those were both so heartwarming and Hilarious.
That ending tho! *Young Midoriya! I want you to tell the world....I AM HERE!* gets me everytime. I loved the visualisation of the pressure that put on Deku.

This was an amazing first episode, just a little recap to make new viewers more comfortable and some great expositions for things to come! Hopefully this won't turn AnimeGaf into the negative shitfest like it was for season 1!

No worries, we have Attack on Titan to feast on.

Also did I say that opening was absolutely phenomenal? I need it credit-less! NOOOOOWWW
MHA was slow again? Damn.
IMO people calling it slow are greatly exaggerating, it was really well paced for a reintroduction and a 1st episode.

They also added tons of anime original scene for more character interactions. If you like MHA at all this should make you happy.

I wasnt feeling the op song in the previews but its way better as the full tv size vers.
All might just gliding through the air in the beginning was great too

The ED was super cute as well with the girls.
Bones did good there.

Tbh, after Mob Psycho 100's intro on episode 1, MHA S2's opening scene felt really tame and plain. Like, I can't believe both of them were from the same studio. It got my hopes up for nothing.

That's actually true, it was only one chapter + just 2 pages from the previous one. lmao

At least AoT starting with a recap makes sense.

No because Persona 5 has come out.

Seems to be on par with average anime writing, too?

Can't judge it really but when I saw the Giantbomb quicklook and it showed the MC getting in trouble because...
he saved a woman from being raped
and then everyone treated him like garbage for it... . Top tier stuff.

Pretty good ending. The lack of final battle really sucks, thouhg.
After his plan failed, the villain just kind of fucks off.
Everything else was great, so at least the show ends on a high note.

No, it's a good thing. People shouldn't be applauded for drinking out of the toilet just because it makes them feel good.

Sure, people critiquing something is important. I just hate how sometimes I feel people continue to watch things they don't like and just contribute to a negative environment that's unpleasant. That's how I felt things were last spring season. People weren't just critiquing , both sides were just shitting on each other. It was unpleasant.

Anyways cheers, I am hoping for the best this season.

Nothing wrong with sticking things out in order to give a better informed opinion but it always seems like it's less the criticism that creates the negativity than the damage control surrounding criticism. Still laughing about one dude last year saying maybe slower anime wasn't for me.

That's how animeGAF is, it'll never change.
