Really? It seems pretty similar to other Street Fighters. No chain combos or dedicated launchers or aerial rave stuff going on, just fairly standard links into cancels.
I'm exaggerating. But it's faster, imo more combo focused, and I feel the tweaks they made were influenced by Vs. The waaaaay over the top presentation doesn't help either.

Yeah. One of the best even if brutally cheap. Simply for the tone and vibe. It got an official gorgeous 240p port on JPN Wii VC. The one I use. There was also an official port on the shit Neo Geo X Gold. Trashy port.
I have my eye on a Neo SD. Seems like a fun cart to have.
i haven't touch the wii VC yet, i really need to get some titles on it. in fact i need to learn how to sign up for a JYP psn and wii account. so far i've just been grabbing hard copies of titles and sitting in front of my CRT.

Ha, ha, really?
super long post:
i was a very competitive street fighter player in high school. i started on SFII and moved unto Championship edition. the only guys who could beat me were the ones who went on to win local state tournaments but i can't touch your 1CC's in art of fighting trilogy =P

since retroGAF is talking street fighter, just a little monologue trip down memory lane:
in NYC, the best players were in Chinatown(the place closed down and reopened in Brooklyn. Diago Umehara has been to the Brookyn location after it was converted from arcades to consoles) and a super arcade in Westchester @ a Nathan's hotdog chain.
These guys were amazing and learned stuff they still don't post on the internet.

i'm sure everyone here is a great player but this is a subtle tip that really gives an edge to equal matched players pre-alpha/zero

for those who's not familiar with SF
alpha/zero introduced a "fake fireball motion with Ryu" a nice touch for most old school SFII players used a fake fireball motion that ended with "jab" to induce opponents to jump.

zTWfU5N.jpg

i learned from the guy who won tourneys not to use 'jab/L.punch" with a fake fireball motion bc it fully commits you to a fake (with no chance of using a real fireball) or fully commits you to a fireball without a chance to backout putting you at a disadvantage. (especially in alpha/zero if a player counters with a Level 3 super fireball) or an accidental dragon punch comes out and you're dead meat =D

i'm going to leave an animation chart for reference(by Lord Zymuth) to help visualize:

during a fireball motion:
3ob9aXrm.jpg

the best fake was to assimilate a low short/L. kick seamlessly within the motion illustrated above. the timing had to be as the joystick hits crouch/forward before Ryu/Ken comes to a rising position.
Z0BzoG3m.png

from this position you can observe:
A: and see if the opponent was induced by the low kick and jump towards you.
B: if the opponent was not induced by the fake: complete the hadouken with any L/M/H punch since you put yourself in a position to throw a hadouken.
wE7SDkdm.png

most players used a jab/L. punch, in a fake from which you're not in a position to throw a fireball at the end of the motion like pictured below
XH2WKQGm.jpg

which was why i couldn't win against him bc i was ingrained w/ the jab for my fakes.

You know what I would like to see? Companies take the time to make proper fully playable versions of Arcade releases on these newer, much more powerful consoles. I'm mean, I sure it happens but definitely not often enough. Too many times we have PSN and compilations released that are simply older inferior arcade home console ports from 20 years ago and not the real thing.

I paid good money for this Dynex!
Alright, well, I went ahead and bought those Universal Game Cases for my SNES and Genesis stuff. I most assuredly don't need 100 of them, but I guess that gives me more than enough extras for whatever I buy down the road.

With shipping, it was like $86. For a buncha plastic cases. I am dumb.

They are out there. Look at what M2 has done for Sega arcade release and their ShotTriggers releases.

Also, I have been cherry-picking some of the ACA releases and things like Darius are surprisingly well done...in ways having details making the experience even greater.

People were quick to shit on the price of SFII Switch and the Mana collection on price but now it looks as if they are going to be solid.

They take time and money. Can't expect a buffet every month. Cream always rises to the top.

Can anyone here recommend the best way to play Shen Mue 2 on the PC? As I am not about to get a Dreamcast especially for it, and some say playing it with the original Jap dialogue instead of english voice-overs is better...

What is the best method right now..? Or recommended sites?

I thought the Pal release of Shenmue 2 for DC only had Japanese/Cantonese voice overs? aFAIK only the Xbox version of Shenmue 2 is dubbed.

Dreamcast emulation is your only choice. Demul is popular, lots of threads with custom builds over at http://www.shenmuedojo.net

English or Japanese is up to your own preference. Buy Shenmue 2 on DC off eBay, and then apply the English dub if you want it.

What kind of hardware are you working with?

Your two main options are NullDC and DEMUL.

DEMUL is the most accurate DC emulator but a bit of a resource hog. If you've got a reasonably powerful PC then DEMUL is the one. It's reasonably reliable, but Shenmue II is quite a complex game to run and crashes can happen. I haven't had any crashes on my most recent playthrough, but it's generally just a case of getting lucky.

NullDC is far less accurate and prone to visual issues, but doesn't eat resources nearly as much as DEMUL. You'll probably need to find the custom Shenmue version over at the Shenmue Dojo to run Shenmue II though, as the last version of NullDC released from the dev team crashes on the game very frequently.

In either case, I suggest using the widescreen/render patch that you can also find over on the Shenmue Dojo.

I asked my wife for these cases last christmas and I had good intention of boxing and printing covers out for each game. I quickly realized how much time, space and extra cost was involved, printing all the covers out. I just recently sold those cases.

I'm going to stop short of printing out covers -- that whole business sounds like a pain. Just gonna throw the carts and the manuals in the case and call it a day. This just makes it much easier to shelve that stuff.

Anyone here collect some of the rarer Japanese systems? FM Towns, X68000. Etc?

It feels like these releases are few and far between. For every Battle Garegga you have a bunch of lazy ports or releases of bad ports from older systems. I would love to see a more purposeful effort from devs to get arcade perfect released of older titles out there (like what M2) is doing.

I mean... not trying to dissuade you from emulating if that's your preference, but a Dreamcast is only like 30 bucks. And it has a really phenomenal library.... and based on your avatar, you'd probably enjoy the dozens of great shoot-em-ups on it.

By all means, emulate if you prefer, but it's just something to reconsider. I've never gotten into Dreamcast emulation so I can't be of much help.

Last night I got my first eagle in Neo Turf Masters. I've been playing this game for years now, and I finally did it!

By the way, all the music and presentation of this game are so classy. I even love the font they use on menus and stuff. Pure class.

Plus the screens after they show your rank in the standings but before you tee up for the next hole - where they show the entire length of that next hole - is just so well stylized. I never skip it and it makes the whole ordeal feel so leisurely and chill. The piano music is also just so fucking classy. It also helps with planning out your shots because they break out each hole in 100 yard increments on that screen:

Amazing pick-up! Neo Turf Masters is one of my favourite Neo Geo games, and has earned a spot in my (hypothetical) four-slot MVS, along side Metal Slug 3, Puzzle Bobble, and The Last Blade. As someone who doesn't typically like sports games, Neo Geo has my favourite sports games.

WELCOME TO THE PARTY PAL
and i just took a USB stick of The Cover Project/etc high quality scans to kinkos/fedex and got good copies made, the stock of paper doesn't matter too much since they're behind plastic anyway. even had the gal there use her laser cutter thing for the stacks and most of em lined up well!

personally, i had to - i love how the right covers have all the front & back art from the old boxes, and the spines (which is 95% of what you're seeing most times anyway) look good on my shelf. i totally went with the standard art, not that weird uniform stuff like "ONLY ON SUPER NINTENDO TM" style ones.

They do, but they are slightly higher then a Genesis clamshell which drives me nuts. 100 case though, that takes up a lot of space.

oh yeah you just can't use em for genesis ones, but thankfully sports games & empty clamshells aren't hard to come by either

Neo Turf Masters is easily one of my favorite Neo Geo games, and it's up there with NBA Jam TE as my favorite sports game. The game feels great to play, and has some of the best music out there. I love it.

Reposting from the Retro AV thread since this is probably a better spot.

Anyone know much about superguns? I'm thinking about picking one up before I head back home from Japan. The shop here has a Combo AV Ex and a Pana Custom Long.

Is the main difference that the Combo AV Ex has HDMI? Do they support higher resolution games or only 15 KHz?

What do y'all think of the NGPC version of NTM?
It's okay. It's missing it's own unique identity and is too much like it's big brother.

Mario Golf on GBC had more of the right idea for a handheld game. I loved the mini-RPG spin of that game and it was far more distinguished from its console counterpart than NTM on the NGPC.

not sure what you mean by "look normal" but the WiiU doesn't have analog video output that I'm aware of.

It's still a 480p or 480i signal going to your tv, it's never going to look great.

I just wanted to correct this. WiiU does have an analog output. It uses the Wii cable but it doesn't do 240p output though. It only goes as low as 480i/p and it does allow 4:3 or 16:9 aspect ratio.

All this Neogeo talk makes me very excited for the 4 slot cabinet I've secured for my new house!

The Pana Custom Long is quite a standard supergun, supports the Jamma standard wiring with a CPS1 kick harness. It only runs 15khz games over rgb (via a JP-21 pinout scart cable) and s-video. The PSU has an adjustable 5v and is switchable between 110/220v. And I "think" it has auto fire functionality but don't quote me on that.

Are you sure you are not taking about the Combo AV and not the Combo AV EX Plus as they are radically different in terms of what they can do. The AV is very much in line with the specs of the Pana Custom Long but the EX Plus is probably the most fully featured supergun you can buy if the links below I found are anything to go by.

http://www.game-kanaya.com/osusumepaneru2/combo2.html
http://www.game-kanaya.com/osusumepaneru2/combofull.html

Can see it has the Gonbes CGA to VGA upscaler installed, so it is taking that output and then converting it to an HDMI compliant signal with another board (although it seems there are plenty of other video output options available too) The link below will give you an idea of how the Gonbes scaler performs.

If I were you I would pick up a cheap adjustable arcade power supply, RGB scart cable, buy the Home Arcade System or H.A.S supergun made by a guy with the handle RGB over at the shmups.system11 forum, buy a couple of Undamned USB to DB15 adapters and use standard Xbox 360 / PS4 / PS3 arcade sticks.

That way you have a completely english speaking support group and if something fails then its really easy to just swap out parts. You can also buy jamma voltmeters which show the current going into the pcb at all times which saves you having to open up the unit and make adjustments with a screwdriver and multimeter every time you want to change pcb or if the voltage drifts.

what's up retro guys and gals =)
my haul from last week

Thanks for all that it helps. I am proficient enough with Japanese and electronics that I would be comfortable with something like this. I like the idea of having everything condensed into one box and well designed so this sort of thing is desirable for me especially because I have animals.

I took an extremely blurry photo of the description card (because most Japanese shops don't want you to take pictures) and it was labeled as a Combo AV Ex. It also says that it has HDMI, DVI, and VGA. That's not super important because I will mostly be playing on a PVM but I also have a monitor that supports 15, 24, and 31 KHz so I can use that with the VGA output as well. I was mostly worried about sync issues because my cheap one looked like this.

FYI if y'all want to try and operation rainfall SE into dropping the Mana Collection in the west.

There's a fan translation out for FM5. It's supposed to be the best in the series so I need to try it.

i have that on my laptop =) that was the only game i downloaded a ps2 emulator for. i brought a legit JYP copy to throw the translation on but i think this is now the preferred way to play.

hmm, i should try this and see how wii games look on WiiU on a crt.. if there's any difference.

I havnt exactly done the Pepsi challenge with it but I did use it @ 480p running through a homemade SLG to play shovel knight with scanlines. I've also used it @480p on a vga CRT and gamecube/wii games look fantastic.

Speaking of which, I did this a few days ago, for a good friend of mine who is a Neo Geo collector (mostly AES, but he recently started to get MVS sets too... Reason why we're doing custom covers for each game he's purchasing):

What happened?

Speaking of ebay. I love when people are like "... my price is firm. No thanks." Then their product doesn't sell for a week and they start lowering it.

I think worse are the people who have the same Item up on ebay for 6 months with it not selling and refuse to even consider lowering the price.

Nah the worst are the "make offer" auctions where no offers below the BIN price are accepted

Yea this one bothers me to. There are a ton of items on eBay now that are at ludicrous price listings based on nothing but a whim. Game loose is $10, Complete, $100. Sealed? $700. Lol

Just wanted to jump on and say I'm finally happy with my retro setup. Decided to get rid of the CRT last year for "space reasons" and have been trying to recapture the magic ever since.

Thankfully the missus is fine with me using the back bedroom as a games/pc room. So I'm now using:

GSCARTSW - Needed an auto SCART switch that I could hide away. It was this or the Hydra.
OSSC(Open Source Scan Converter) - Originally had a Framemeister XRGB preorder, but Solaris failed to ship it for two months (without telling me) so I cancelled and went with the OSSC when my waiting list number came up. pleased I did.
Samsung UE32K5600 HDTV - 32inch, only 1080p, but the image is good and the input lag is approx 10ms (under a frame) in game mode. The OSSC doesn't add any perceptible lag, so it's nigh-on perfect. TV is also compatible with the OSSC's 3x/4x modes out of the box. Might need to tinker to get the 5x image stable.

Seeing as I'm UK-based my consoles are 60hz modded if needed (and the N64 is RGB modded), with most running via RGB SCART (or RGsB via SCART for the PS2). The Wii's hooked up via component, the Dreamcast via VGA. It's all routed through to an external speaker system.
