A note about Persona 5 Streaming From Atlus

Since we're talking unsubstantiated claims, many people (including myself) have bought games that they previously watched in LPs. There's no real evidence one way or the other so using this to defend Atlus JP is just being disingenuous.

In cases of poor publisher promotion, that makes complete sense. I find it hard to believe however that someone would need more than the hours and hours of available Persona 5 footage to determine if they want to purchase it or not.

Hell, you can watch Atlus themselves stream the first 2 hours. But no, it was really that 35 hour speedrun of the game by that guy who giggles all the time that made me want to purchase it...

I can't substantiate this claim, but I believe that many use LPs as an excuse not to support the developers. Personally, the concept of watching someone play a video game and interject with giggles and talking bullshit is not a legitimate form of entertainment, but to each their own.

I'd be curious to see what general sentiment would have been like had Atlus advised upfront that there was a temporary ban on streaming. Though at this stage with the incessant whining from GAFers and the like, they may just have to change their position.
If you can't then your just spouting bullshit.

Great... I've been on blackout for this game since the first trailer and now thanks to this statement I know something major is going to happen on 7/7 😑

I believe any game made before 1997 is "essentially cave man art."
Really enjoying it, I suggest everyone buy a copy and don't wait around for an LP. Support your devs!

If you need to watch someone play a video game for 10 hours because the trailers don't do it for you, you probably aren't the target demographic of the game.

Good luck growing the game base audience.

I'd never heard of the series until the reviews came out for this one, I am tempted and the first thing I did is went on youtube for gameplay videos...

You are an entitled, petulant child. Since when did watching people play video games become the greater form of entertainment than playing it for yourself?

Haha what the hell? I don't want to support this shit so I'm a petulant child?

Of course I would have more fun playing by myself, but I care more about my principles than my enjoyment in this case. Hate me if you want. but this kind of passive aggressive bullshit over a company is ridiculous.

I wouldn't have played Persona 4 if I hadn't heard about it from the Giant Bomb Endurance Run

ur silly

It is ridiculous. This is a horrible business practice that is probably gonna keep me from buying future Atlus games. This is a level of daftness beyond even Nintendo.

I mean it's not like any P5 gameplay is banned from the internet, I watched plenty of reviews before I made my purchase,

Man, fuck this. I'm not buying this game until they reverse this shit. (I realise that may technically be never.)

Edit: Gonna watch as many streams as I can though.
I'd hate to miss out on this game but if taking a stance is more important by all means.

Yeah, if you're waiting for them to change their mind on this, when it will probably not affect their sales much (AKA the only thing that changes publishers minds) you're going to be in for one.

An out of touch Japanese studio petrified that Let's Plays are gonna hurt their bottom line push their weight around to put a stop to it. Yeah, real noble.

I sort of get it and think it's really not that big a deal, but also, to ATLUS, this isn't really a big a deal. I'm just missing out on some wicked good screenshots for my laptop background.

I'm kind of on the other side and looking to just ignore this game for now. Plenty of other top tier games that I don't need to feel shitty supporting devs who have shitty policies. Will buy when it's B2G1 used at gamestop.

This series doesn't mean much to me but I was still thinking about picking this up this week and putting it to the front of my backlog which has games like Nier and Yakuza in it.

The actual devs are probably not to blame here. It's more on the publishing side of things I would imagine.

Well they cancelled the LP because of this so uh...yeah

Not even Nintendo made a fuss about streaming Zelda BotW. They just did what they always do, which is claiming your video and monetize it. By now everyone is used to it (even though it's still stupid but whatever).
Horizon and Nier Automata players had no problems whatsoever.

But Atlus really takes the cake on this one, going so far as to threaten streamers with suspension of their accounts?!

That's like getting the had it a company fired because he told people that Darth Vader is looks Luke's father, a year after Empire Strikes Back came out in cinemas.

Atlus, you can go fuck yourselves with this bullshit.
I'm gonna steam it, with a constant warning in the corner and title that my stands contain spoilers for the whole game, and you can go fuck yourselves like the backwards ass dipshits that you pretend to be right now.

How much do you bet they won't do anything like this for when SMT V releases on Switch?

This is stupid as hell.

Giant Bomb's Persona 4 Endurance Run brought so many people to the franchise (like myself). Fucking over the fans and limiting media coverage is the dumbest thing if they want to expand their audience overseas..

It really is impressive how out of touch AtlusJP is. All the moreso considering the emphasis on social media in the series itself.

the only good thing to come from this is that boss fight database might get shut down and can stop showing up with new recommendations that spoil every boss from every newly released game

Some Japanese companies are really weird with their copyright claims. From painful experience, Capcom will not pull down videos showing every Ace Attorney culprit in loving detail uploaded less than 24 hours after a game in the series comes out, but god help you if you upload actual gameplay from the game.

(Capcom USA doesn't really care as far as I can tell)

So what exactly is the thinking here?

Do Japanese companies really believe LPs and streams hurt sales, despite all evidence to the contrary, or is there something I'm not seeing?

I'm not sure where the fear comes from but it seems like it.

It's especially funny with Persona 5 specifically considering the entire reason I am aware of the series is the Persona 4 endurance run.

Where is the contrary evidence? I was atually curious if there was any. And I don't mean neogaf posts saying they bought it because of giant bomb.

love how a whole bunch of streams on twitter have titles like "this story driven story might have story" and other snarky titles about the limitations. god damn atlusjp

Your loss. Considering that the game isn't a sprawling open world with a bunch of camera angles you can tap into, I'm not understanding what the big deal is. Use your phone and the Imgur app.

Can someone who is capable of writing in Japanese well write a strongly-worded message to the head of ATLUS? Because they need it and they should know that this is not acceptable. They need to move on with time instead of stuck in the past.

The success of streamer friendly games like Goat Simulator, Minecraft and Five Nights at Freddy's. For narrative heavy games, stuff like Life is Strange and Hatoful Boyfriend, which had a large online presence despite limited, if any, traditional marketing.

Or simply the behavior of other publishers and how they approach streaming. Like Ubisoft's For Honor sold gangbusters with barely any traditional marketing, instead riding almost pure on the backs of streamers. There's a reason why Western publishers are much more interested in courting influencers rather than traditional avenues of advertising.

There's basically no concrete evidence on either side. That said there's loads of comments from people who bought games thanks to Let's Plays. As someone who has made videos and watched others I've seen hundreds upon hundreds of these comments for a variety of games and content creators.

I can see this being a reasonable request coming from a game that is completely held up by it's story. Visual Novels like Danganronpa and Ace Attorney, games like Gone Home and Firewatch. Stuff like isn't as easy to go back to. Persona on the other hand has an incredible gameplay loop with fantastic combat and monster collecting/fusing mechanics. I like many others knew many of the major plot points/events on P4 but still bought a copy to experience the gameplay.

Personally I think they shouldn't ban people from capturing footage for their game. This is a level beyond the stuff that Nintendo does and even that gets proper criticism. It could also set a precedent. It only takes a couple of games limiting what you can show until more and more Publishers attempt to make it the new normal.

In addition to the above, you're also understating the influence Giant Bomb had for people who subsequently became aware of Persona and invested in the series due to their Endurance Run.

It's funny that even if you only took anecdotal evidence into account, streaming etc. seems to cause more sales than it prevents. Going out of your way to block videos and streaming based solely on an assumption that more people won't bother buying the game is strange.

I'm not, I just think a corporation being this stubborn would be interested in some numbers. It also might easier to find posts of people saying they bought a game because of a let's play rather than people saying otherwise, so the corporation could wave that around as their 'reasoning'

Seriously, it's absolutely amazing how video game companies in Japan, one of the most technologically advanced nations in human history, are so backwards when it comes to the internet.

I can train to their HQ right now, I'll hold a one person protest.

I don't agree with this at all. We've seen completely story centric games like LiS and Hatoful Boyfriend that have strong sales that can seemingly be tied to a robust streaming presence.

As far as I am aware, we have no evidence of the contrary, where a game is popular on LPs and streams but has disproportionately low sales.

This made me laugh. I remember seeing a request for something like this on /r/translator a while back.

So they are going for post game release free speach censorship? good luck on that.
"imagines someone creating a streamaccount just to try meme spoilers in twitch chats", like that person would care for getting it suspended.

Both the backlash and the lack of exposure in the streaming community is going to hurt the goddamn sales of this game, those fucking regressive nincompoops.

I can only imagine the reaction of all the tweens, who don't read game reviews but watch streamers, being exposed to the incredible style of Persona 5. Spend enough time looking at that game and it sells itself. *sigh* That won't be happening.

Get with the effing times.
