The Gundam |OT2| Another 5 years of Gunpla, Origins, and GUNDAMUUUU!

I've seen some review videos and the Sazabi is definitely huge.

Looks like Tallgeese III was also an exclusive? Shame I would have liked that one as well.

It's funny but the first Gunpla kit I ever got was the Wing Gundam back when it was airing on Toonami. Wish I knew where that thing was even if it probably looks like child's play compared to the newer ones.
I still see my local Midtown Comics selling those old era Wing models...I don't buy them, I don't even think they're HG's. I'm not sure what they are. P Bandai pisses me off a lot, it's like they put the actual good shit from Wing in there. I would love a MG Tallgeese 3, luckily Tallgeese I is findable, but the cool shit is rare. Watch them do a MG Merurius and Vayete and make them P Bandai exclusive.

How often does this happen? Is Altron a one print MG?

No, it recently got a reprint (although I don't know whether the reprint was announced or already happened offhand). It's just really popular. Popular P-Bandai stuff get multiple reprints, so don't be surprised to see this come out again. Just gotta keep your eyes open.

I've got a Gundam X and sort of want to get the Double X but that almost feels like mostly a repeat.

As someone who's built both, sorta? Almost all the armor pieces are different and allot of the inner frame is different too (My biggest disappointment with the MG Double X is that it reuses the X's frame for the torso, so the final kit is less chubby than the Double X should be). I really liked building the Double X's legs in particular. I'm making more of an argument that they're actually different, I guess, but the similarities like the green chest pieces and the prism paper stick in my mind.

You'd probably be ok with just the one, if I was pushed on it. I have both because I love Gundam X and want to support more releases. The MG DX has a majesty on my shelf that isn't really matched by anything else. It's a centerpiece, in particular for if you own allot of gunpla. The GX is the more interesting build of the two since the GX is a more atypical Gundam than we're used to (it has more unique gimmicks), but the DX is a more fun build.

Tallgeese III being a Penis Bandai exclusive is so weird to me. I can understand it with the II but not here.
I mean, it's right behind Wing and Deathscythe when it comes to most popular Gundam Wing mobile suit. Glad the I is my favorite Wing suit, though I have yet to buy it because there's no need to rush for it XD

It might have been a NG but I don't remember anymore. Thought it was awesome when i was a kid though.

Well, that's nice at least. Just need to be vigilant I guess.

I might pick it up then as I love the series and the Gundam as well. Thanks for the rundown on the differences!

I hope somebody on here tells me about the next print then cause I really want that one.

Haha same.

They did actually yes.

Many people really love Origin Gundam so if that styling is to your taste then it wont do you wrong.

Its a great kit from everything I've read and saw online.

It really is an awesome kit. It's what got me back into Gunpla after being away from it for years. Hit me like a gateway drug.

I hope somebody on here tells me about the next print then cause I really want that one.

I do too. I generally dislike the Altron, save for its EW version. It's the only version of it that I think is legit cool.

I've only done regular decals which I think I've gotten better with over time aside from the super small ones at times. Never done dry or water slide decals. But I do think the decals can add a bit to the models that I really like.

Need to try doing some panel lining as well at some point.

Edit:

I like the look of the Justice 2.0. I'll definitely get it to compliment the Freedom. Still thinking on the Providence, but I think that'll do me for SEED suits.

gundamGAF, decal and panel line, it's really worth it:

But I'm lazy and do this stuff sitting on my bed.
definitely give it a shot. but i understand how you feel. i haven't top coat spray, spray paint, or use anything that smells like lighter fluid bc i'm in an apartment and don't want to open my windows in freezing winter.
i haven't done waterslides since 3rd grade where i totally messed them up. but i know they do look good if you decide to put them on.

but if you get an RG half the build is the decals.

try the panel lining =), it's fun and 100% easy to erase mistakes.
yeah, i haven't brought a master grade a long time, i have justice mg on pre-order, i think providence looks good too and will get him after trying justice.

Any recommendations on markers/pens for it?

Oh the Justice 2.0 is already up for preorder?

Edit: Oh snap, looks like it is.

these aren't the basic ones everyone recommends but they're much easier to use and come out cleaner imo:
gm20 black brush style marker
gm21 grey brush style marker

pretty much use the grey on white plastics
black on darkers colors like blue/red.

here's a tutorial specific for this marker:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oLZTXTayf4U
instead of tissue as the video suggested, use a precision q-tip for more accurate results

EDIT:
as reference, a runner i used this marker on:

Finished!

Good build, tried panel line washing as my method this time. It's really satisfying to see it kinda feed itself and line for you but cleaning up is still a bit difficult and came out kinda messy in spots. Though I might clean it up a bit before top coating it tonight.

Also ordered a pretty cheap display case last night since stuff is getting dusty and also bought two figures too :p (Nina from Tekken and Lisa Lisa from Jojo's with the limited Rose from Street Fighter colors!) hopefully its big enough for all this crap. Slowly turning my apartment into an otaku paradise.

Next up is MG Ingram 3 from Patlabor. After that I would like to knock Infinite Justice out of the way. Though if I'm honest I can barely see the difference between Justice and Infininte Justice. I just like Athrun and the Seed designs in general.

Nice thanks! Is it doable to do panel lines when fully constructed? Wouldn't mind doing this to some of my completed kits though doing it on the runner would obviously be easier.

Got nostalgic today and started going through the old Toonami promos for the various shows. The Gundam ones were some of the best I think. Peter Cullen really did a good job, but then that's expected really. It'd be really cool if those old promos were on the Blu-rays coming over here or at least the two minute one. Doubtful I know.

I'd almost forgotten the ending we got for the US airing since they didn't show the openings or endings back then. Is there a source for the music used? I can tell it's some sort of rock instrumental of Just Communication, the first opening, but was it an official one or something just for the US airing?

It's officially called "Just Communication (Instrumental) and is on the first Wing OST (track 38).

I have the soundtracks and the instrumental is right on there. The vocalist track is probably the one that got caught in licensing hell, or just flat out too expensive like the Zeta OP's and ED. We are never getting those on an official release.

it's actually correct to do panel lines as you suggested, after you constructed it. yeah, go for it! all the built kits are perfect for panel lining. you can always pull apart the arms, head if you need more clearance.

i just did on the runners bc i got greasy hands and barely do any sanding, but i don't recommend doing it that way(even though i always do it) =)

Yet they left it and Rhythm Emotion in when it played during episodes lol. Hearing Just Communication during episode 3(?) on TV was my first exposure to J-music.

Oh neat. Was it ever used in the show proper? It's been years since I've done a watch of Wing so I can't quite recall.

I think I remember this actually.

If I'm being honest, I prefer this instrumental to the actual opening song. I remember hearing that about that with Zeta which is a shame. Wasn't even on the recent Blu-rays? It's always a bit weird hearing about these sorts of issues. I'm trying to think of other times this has happened. First one that comes to mind is TOKIO's opening on The Skull Man, which I know was cut from the US Release.

Ah gotcha. Yeah I'd probably do the parts separately. That's what I've been doing for stickers lately where I'll do each of the individual parts before putting it all together.

Zeta's second OP is legit one of my favorite anime OP's period. But shit, I don't think they want to give Neil Sedaka's estate a cut of the DVD money so it's never happening.

panel lining on the runners is actually sometimes easier than doing it after a kit is completed. sometimes you can't get your pen/marker into a spot just right. Unless you use wash of course. Very useful for wings, face mask, and outside armor pieces that stand out. Use your good judgement of course. but panel lining is about mistakes and cleaning up. don't be scared. If you are not top coating you can always go back. Hell even if you top coat just peel it.

Quick Example
Mg wing runner.

Final result after a decent cleanup.

yeah that's a good strategy. i do the same =)
i just go over to the last page as i'm building a part to check where the decals go:
ex: decaling and trimming while building the core fighter right at the start of the kit

there's a little secret to apply small decals on RG's is to use clear tape.

I hear you there brother. I don't think I'd be half as much of a Gundam fan as I am if it wasn't for that second Op

Ya know what people haven't been talking about much? The new HGUC Zeta Gundam! It looks really neat. There's a few peeves I have with it, like how the rifle doesn't appear to be able to mount to the arm and the shield is yet again locked into place on the arm (the MG 2.0 was the last to not do this) and maybe it's a mite blocky, but this looks like the best posing Zeta Gundam at the 1/144 scale ever. Some of the promo pictures are wild - It can do a wide, wide "Aile Strike" pose. Link because I'm at work:

Doable but I don't recommend it. Maybe I'm just paranoid, but I'm afraid of leaving stress marks by the gates on the plastic by continually panel lining, but maybe I just apply too much pressure when I'm filling.

It's pretty legit. I don't know about one of my favorites, but it's pretty high up there. The American intro is garbagio.

80's/90's Gundam OP's are their best OP's. They can still churn out a good one here and there, but I love my old school JPop OP's too much. I think the second one brings in the melancholy of the second half really damn well, that and it's just a great song.

I will be buying HGUC Zeta since I heard the rest of them are hand grenades.

That looks nice. I have a RG Zeta that is pretty awesome but due to a slip up during construction I am afraid to touch it. It was the first Zeta I did with a posable waist and this appears to have that and more so probably a good alternative if I want another 1/144 zeta.

Man they are rebranding HG, AGAIN? HGUC Revive lasted what a year and some change? Now its HG Evolution Accelerate or some nonsense... -eyeroll-

Hopefully gonna start the Patlabor this weekend. That instruction manual was garbo at a glance. Does not differentiate what part you are building and just seems to go in sequence, though it is in the order I would build it, legs, to head. Well see how this turns out though!

Personal Gundam update.

Still watching the first series, currently around ~20 episodes in. Amuro is definitely more whiny and annoying than in the beginning. I hope he mans up soon. Also, new baddies. Give me back Char.

I also put more time in Gundam Breaker 3 - rebought the 8k yen version with all DLC, seeing that the patches released since the game was first out fixed most of my complaints which I had. It's still a fun, mindless slasher, but it's really easy to get lost in the customization.

Here's a very old screenshot of my MS (I'm 40 levels higher now and parts are higher rarity, but it pretty much looks the same):

how long did it take you to build rx-78?

... first picture I have of the box was January 2nd haha. First picture of it started assembly was March 1st... finished it April 5th rofl...

I'm the worst at making them in one go. I make a section, take a break find other things to do, then start, break, then start again.

Maybe in all it took like... 10 hours what it feels like, most likely something around 6. Keeps me from buying kits when I'm out shopping because its in the back of my head "I have one unbuilt on my desk!" Could probably do a MG or HG in one sitting if I concentrated. Thankfully there does not seem to be as many parts for the Ingram 3 compared to a Gundam MG.

Fun fact: The rebranding is only on promotional materials. The products don't refer to themselves as Revive or Evolution Accelerate, just HGUC like they always have.

I kinda woulda preferred they did use those names actually, as this shit sounds tougher for a casual consumer. ... I'm probably worrying too much about it.

I like the look of the Justice 2.0. I'll definitely get it to compliment the Freedom. Still thinking on the Providence, but I think that'll do me for SEED suits.

Edit 2: Ah so this seems to be more of a prototype. Still interested.

The MG Justice started as a prototype based on a 1/100 Justice that was customized and modified by a builder that our company contracted.

That's how a lot of kits are first designed as a prototype first. It was the same way for the Providence.

Bandai has a lot of prototypes that we have modelers build and then we scan the model. Then engineer the runners on a computer based on the prototype. Once done, they go through injection and testing before mass production.

The 00 Gundams from A Wakening of Trailblazer all had prototype 1/100 models made, but were never released and went out of prototyping stage seeing how they weren't able to cost effectively translate the kits into 1/100 scale.

We actually buy and collect third party kits for research for the feasibility of future products, and so that we can enforce the strict Bandai-only kit base regulations that we have for all shows and builder championships.

The design and engineering for special models like the Ver Ka line is done a little differently, but I can't say anything else on that.

I thought you working for Bandai was a running joke...

Is it really true, or have I just been masterfully trolled?

Man, panel-lining 11 DRAGOON units is tedious...

Only thing left to do on MG Providence is the legs and I'll have pics up. Should have it done by Monday.

It's why I was so apprehensive about buying it honestly.

Bought a display case!

It was originally gonna be for my Gundams but there isn't enough depth to it for my Aegis, which is on the big side. It fit but no in the pose I wanted so I will look for a bigger one. For now I tossed in my randomly growing collection of figures. Never thought I'd get anime style figures but since I'm here I guess I'm willing to grab ones for characters I really really like such as Nina and Lisa Lisa. The Macross ones came out of the UFO catcher lol.

-edit- just realized everything in there is purple themed. I don't even like the color all that much.

RX-78 Origin is drying after top coat at the moment so not on display. So humid and rainy today its taking forever to dry :(
