Really only the Sonic 1 / CD sprite I found appealing.

2 was ok and 3 felt too chunky. Feel the blends they've gone for in Mania are excellent.

The Sonic 2 sprite has always been superior for me since it had the better run animation and color.

I've also never liked the light shade of blue they used for Sonic's sprite, and artwork from the first game.

Was this never posted here?

Wait wait wait, are the Hard Boileds Heavies the main bosses in the game?

Sonic 3's Sonic sprite is my favorite too, but I don't think Mania "made a mistake" by going with the original/CD sprite either. They're all great in their own ways.

This game definitely harkens back to the more trippy-ass-balls design of CD, so it's appropriate. Reminds me a lot of Chaotix which I think has a great visual style though the game itself isn't much to write home about.

3 started the shift to cartoony realism that continued in the Adventure series and reached its uncomfortable zenith in 06, so I can see why they might try and get away from that.

Hope CD gets a full level unlike in Generations, although I don't want Stardust Speedway again. Mystic Cave, Quartz Quadrant and Icecap would round out the retro selections nicely.

Big fan of Flying Battery Zone from Sonic 3 & K, though I would have though that at this point the Flying Battery would be... less flying? We get some sense of that in the garbage chute, but it is for all intents and purposes still active. It kind of gets screwed up pretty bad by the end of the S&K version.

It's no worse than the Death Egg getting fucked (and repaired almost instantly) in Sonic 2, 3, and S&K lol

Anyone else still get goosebumps watching the announcement trailer? The slow beginning, the rewind with the music building to a crescendo, and then syncing with Sonic tapping his foot. I watch it every couple of days and it gets me so pumped for this.

I pre ordered the special edition for Nintendo switch. Can't wait. I love sonic adventure 2, but the 2d sonic were always my favorite. I never owned a sets genisis. I played the game boy advanced versions and they were amazing. Can't wait.

I also watch the trailer more than I should. Great music. Polygon had a ton of videos go up recently as well.

Have they said if the Nintendo Switch version will be gimped in any way in comparison to the PS4 version?

Are they identical across all platforms? This game is gonna make me buy a Switch if that is the case...

Can't imagine why it would be. It's a 2D sprite-based platformer. running at a native res of like, 424x240. It's looked identical in what footage of the Switch version we've seen.

I'm guessing you havent watched the trailer or even seen a single screenshot of the game

You're right, though it's nice that continuity reasoning hasn't stopped them either.
One has to wonder how it is that Eggman managed to stealthily launch so many amazing space stations past the atmosphere at this point.

Well in Sonic Heroes he can magically make whole fleets of ships suddenly appear out of nowhere with teleportation or something.

The actual answer is simply because he can and game logic, we wanted an Eggman base in space or whatever.

The thing that really made me raise an eyebrow was the giant fucking tower leading to space he built in Sonic Colors. Like how did NO ONE notice him doing that?

Isn't Sonic Heroes the game that had Metal Sonic transform into that stupid dragon?

How is it this game seems to be doing everything so right, when sega usually does it so wrong.
On Sega specifically, it's usually because they rarely if ever gave Sonic games the time needed to cook properly. On Sonic Team, it's because they have a tendency to throw lousy ideas at the wall. (Although how much of them is because they were pushed to focus group, who knows)

Sega's new CEO, as I understand it, does genuinely want to give projects more time to polish. Not sure why Sonic Boom was a bomb though.

Precisely because it's not actual Sega people who are making it.

Specifically, the team that is responsible for Sonic games are probably the worst designers/team managers at Sega.

It's kind of funny how they've got A list talent all over the world and even their native Japan but they still haven't assigned their premier franchise to someone who have a capable track record like RGG Studio or Creative Assembly (Or just about anyone)

a trusted source informs me that the switch version will run at 20fps, like the mobile ports of mega man 1-6

Anyone noticed that SEGA used Flying Battery for the S3&K portion of Mania's reveal trailer, and we ended up getting Flying Battery?
Aquatic Ruin was used for the Sonic 2 part, so.... maybe we're getting that too?

Can't wait for that Regal Ruin stage.

I seriously think you're onto something. Unfortunately, I was hoping Hydrocity would be the revived water level after Generations shafted it.

Maybe they'll finally take those Sonic 3 multiplayer maps and make them full-fledged zones.

Glad you brought up Chrome Gadget. I always thought that level had such a cool vibe to it, and of course great music. I'd love to see it expanded upon.

Ya know what...This could be happening. Aquatic Ruin is underrated as hell imo. Not sure if this were to happen it would rule out Hydrocity though.

I made a ridiculous tie dye tee celebrating today haha! :)

Can't wait for the new game, looks so amazing! ♥

... Are these for sale?

It is, but Sonic 4 gave Aquatic Ruin its time in the Sun. I'm personally hoping for Wing Fortress or Mystic Cave.

... Or Casino Night. I may be hypocritical, but I literally cannot get enough of that level.

First stage I thought of. As a kid I fell in love with Chrome Gadget's aesthetic and music. I kept hoping it would be used in a Sonic & Knuckles sequel but that game never came. :-(

I can understand people who prefer sonic's design in 1/2, but I hope nobody actually thinks those sprites are better drawn.
Mania at least fixes the tiny hand, which stuck out in a really jarring way -- though he still has the odd pointy shoes too.

Some Green Hill Act 2 footage went up, Japanese commentary, but you can hear the music well:

https://youtu.be/YW_-myzFUkg

Of course they stop before showing the boss, again.

Music continues to be really strong in this game. I'm really happy they're doing the Sonic 3 thing with act 2 having a different arrangement. Seriously though...I want to see at least one boss besides the GHZ act 1 boss.

On the topic of bosses, my current theory is Eggman is the boss of the returning zones, while you fight the Hard Boiled Heavies in the original zones. Since we know Eggman's in Green Hill and we've seen screens of Hard Boiled Heavies in both Studiopolis and Mirage Saloon. That would result in a game with a huge amount of stages though so I'm not sure how realistic that theory is.
