Rayman 3 (GBA) and Rayman Advance are coming to the NA Wii U VC tomorrow

The North American Wii U Virtual Console is being updated this week with two surprise Rayman games. Tomorrow, Ubisoft will be putting out both Rayman 3 and Rayman Advance on the eShop.

Here’s an overview of Rayman 3:

“When Globox, Rayman’s best friend, inadvertently swallows a dreadful black Lum, it isn’t the end of the world — but it could be! To prevent a full-scale invasion of malicious, ill-mannered hordes there is only one solution: Rayman must get someone to treat his burdensome pal.”

And Rayman Advance:

“In Rayman’s world, nature and people live together in peace. But one day, the evil Mister Dark steals the Great Protoon that provides energy and balance in the world. Betilla tried to stop him, but she wasn’t strong enough. Now strange new creatures appear and capture every Electoon they can find! They definitely need a hero… Rayman to the rescue!”

Nintendo’s website isn’t listing prices at the moment. Rayman 3 and Rayman 3 should both be GBA releases, so based on that, each one should cost about $7.99

This is a great way to prime the audience for the new port of Rayman 2 to the Nintendo Switch.

It will be called Rayman: The Great Escape: Definitive Edition.

$59.99.

As someone who loves Rayman 2, I'd buy a definitive Switch version. Getting the PC version playing nice with a DS4 controller and glidefx on Windows 10 was more effort than expected.

That's pretty good timing, I just beat Rayman 2 and wanted to replay the GBA version of Rayman 3. I remember it being a really good de-make of 2.

Rayman Advance is awful though...it takes way too many compromises to get a PS1 game to run on GBA. The camera's zoomed in too far and all the large sprites are pixellated messes.

Nah, it'd just be called Rayman Switch. If they put "the great escape" in the title, unobservant idiots like me won't accidentally buy it

Rayman 3 is pretty good, wouldn't recommend Advance over the other versions of Rayman, the screen space is too small

Rayman Advanced is bad, but it has a place in my heart since it was my childhood game. The AWFUL zoomed-in camera made it pretty challenging. It's a nice game to go back to because you can see how flawed it is.

I just finished Rayman 2 on PC, the GOG comes with glidefx which is nice. But yeah, there was no way to get the controller layout precisely how I wanted, but JoyToKey helped out a lot.

Game has aged extremely well visually though.

edit: More on topic, I never knew that there was a Rayman 3 for GBA.

Rayman 3 GBA is a good game. It's a 2D version of Rayman 3, and is pretty fleshed out. I recommend trying it. Rayman Advance is a poor port of the original Rayman game. It did rebalance the difficulty, making the game easier to enjoy, but all the other issues can make it hard to stomach. If you want to play a proper version of Rayman 1 with the rebalanced difficulty, play the DSi version. Otherwise, play the Jaguar or PS1 versions (The PC version's music playback is messed up, avoid if possible).

If we're already talking about GBA Rayman, there's two more games, and they are also worth checking out. Hoodlums' Revenge was an isometric-ish sequel to Rayman 3, it played somewhat like the GBA Spyro games. Rayman Raving Rabbids GBA was a 2D platformer (GBA version is a straightforward platformer, unlike the console versions, which were party games, or the DS version, which was a 2.5D platformer with emphasis on a costume gimmick ). Also, it's pretty much the only Rayman game to bring back a handful of elements from the original game that disappeared in all later games (Although a few showed up in the latest games too).

That was the GBC Rayman game.

Absolutely under no circumstances should anyone buy Rayman Advance, it's an awful port. Rather than shrinking everything they simply shrunk the screen real estate which turns almost every jump in the game into a blind leap of faith (and Rayman was already notorious for that), plus the music is pretty much as bad as Sonic Genesis for the GBA. Rayman 3 was pretty good though as that was obviously built with the GBA in mind.

God damn, I had no idea there were so many Rayman 2D platformers outside of the original and its ports (and the recent UbiArt ones). Is the GBC one any good?

edit: Jesus there's two GBC ones, I assume the 1st one is similar in that it's also a redesign/demake of the original. I guess it makes sense that I missed all this stuff considering I didn't really get into the series and start playing the older titles until recently.

I wonder what it would take for Sega to throw the Sonic Advance games up on the Wii U VC. I'd love some big screen Sonic Advance 2 right about now.

GBA VC support in 2017...

I never would have guessed it honestly.

...I uh...what? Nintendo has been listing TG16 games on the virtual console recently, and that predates the GBA by at least a decade.

Rayman 3 GBA is great and I was thrilled to get the chance to lay it a few years ago. I can't recommend it strongly enough at the price. You're getting an all new 2D Rayman adventure that isn't to the amazing level of the three mainline 2D games but is still great.

I would love a Rayman Revolution port on Switch, but Rayman 3 would be far preferred. I'm still legit surprised that skipped Wii U after Legends still sold most on Wii U.

Kind of annoying they're still releasing Wii U Switch games when Switch doesn't even have VC yet, unless the Neo Geo games count. It's fine to support the Wii U, but it seems like it wouldn't be difficult to make these simultaneous releases with Switch.

Rayman 3 GBA is a 2D version of Rayman 2 with some element of Rayman 3 here and there like the Hoodlums. Probably it started as a Rayman 2 port, then 3 got released and they repurposed the game

Alternatively, Nintendo shouldn't just abandon all their existing customers the moment a new console is released.

The Switch will get a Virtual Console of its own, just give it time, the thing isn't even two months old yet.

Well the Switch's biggest supporter is currently trying to peddle a Gameboy and two SNES games for quite a high amount. Nintendo announcing a full VC might undercut that.

Also Nintendo implied Switch VC will have online and that would make Ultra Street Fighter 2 redundant too.

You say that but I'd buy it, not at that price of course, but a definitive version of Rayman would be legit on the go after the subpar 3DS version we got (performance wise).

Great games, don't see the point in getting though. You'd think Nintendo would announce all VC will carry over, but instead I buy nothing out of fear they won't.

Shut up it was my first game on my gba and my first rayman game.

This was the best version.

The 3DS version actually is definitive (minus extra content from Revolution) but only if you have access to a homebrew capable New 3DS. You can force the CPU to run at 800 MHz which causes Rayman 2 to run at a consistent 60 fps.

Rayman Advance is easier than other versions despite the smaller screen because you have more health.

Rayman 3 GBA is an actually good game and not a port of anything. It should really be called Rayman 2.5 because it meshes together stuff from 2 and 3.

Like I said, it should be simultaneous, no reason VC games can't be released on both.

Rayman 3 GBA was a good game, but people should not pay money for Rayman Advance. Rayman Classic is free on Android and iOS and it's a much better port (though Playstation is best).

About that, I wonder if people know that Rayman Legends will soon have only one version less than Rayman 2 (not counting the emulated PS1 version on PS3/PSP/Vita), while it hasn't even been 4 years since its original release date yet. Rayman Legends also only has ports with minimal differences (even the "definitive edition" will seemingly only have an expanded Kung Foot minigame) while R2 has completely different games like Revolution and the GBC version. So Rayman Legends' porting spree is far, far worse than R2's has ever been.

I would definitely buy a Rayman Revolution HD.

I had a pleasant dream last night - I had just bought a handheld with a great screen. That device was running all neo geo titles, as well as msx titles, and some arcade boards as well. It was delicious. Perhaps I should get a switch sooner.

Yeah, I remember reading about this here a while ago. It's kind of bad to have to resort to homebrew to have a decent experience on it, still cool that the option is there though.

The content from Revolution, now that you bring it up, while making the game bigger, isn't necessarily...necessary, the game is best represented with its OG version imo.

Like I said, it should be simultaneous, no reason VC games can't be released on both.

VC hasn't even been deployed on Switch, therefore they cannot start to roll out VC games like that (would be surprisingly cool), I get what you're saying though.

I wonder when that will happen, is it for when Nintendo will deploy their paid online plan or before, will it transfer all the VC titles from Wii U instantly or will they start on a blank slate with only a dozen of games of all consoles...

I fucking hope it's not the latter, but it wouldn't surprise me at the same time. I always thought they were sitting on sooooo much money on Wii U by releasing their VC titles like a badly close kitchen sink that's drop a tiny bit of water every now and then.

I have not been keeping up with all VC news but GBA always seemed to be very under-supported in their library. With most of Nintendo's focus on the Switch now, I was simply surprised to see support for what has seemed like an under-leveraged initiative.

N64 is the most under supported VC ever.

Yeah I bought the PS1 version on PSN but reading about the insane difficulty turned me off it.

So happy about the DSiWare release which further decreases difficulty from the easier GBS release.

There are a ton of GBA Virtual Console titles. There are over 70.

N64 is the most under supported VC ever.

Yeah there were only 21 titles on the original Wii in North America for N64 and the Wii U has matched that number with several titles like Donkey Kong 64, Excitebike 64 and Harvest Moon 64 that weren't ever released on the Wii VC.

Number of Virtual Console titles currently available with total number released in paranthesis.

Wii VC:

NES: 92 (94)
SNES: 63 (74)
N64: 21
Commodore 64: 0 (9)
Master System: 15 (16)
Genesis: 73 (75
Neo Geo: 54
TurboGrafx: 58 (63)

Wii U VC:

NES 94
SNES 51
N64 21
GBA: 72
DS 31
Wii 29
TurboGrafx: 9 (6 have been in the last few weeks)

N64 has always been the least supported of the big systems.

Yep. Probably the best way to experience the game outside of the Dreamcast version.

These two games will make the GBA library 74 titles, or their second-largest after the 93 titles on NES.

EDIT: Beaten. GBA's VC library is great, but it's missing Sega and Square-Enix support, so if your main memories of the GBA were those two, it's lacking. It has tons of support from Capcom and Konami, though.

Good to know. It's too late in the generation for me to be buying VC titles now, but hopefully that level of support will carry over whenever the Switch VC gets implemented.

nevermind me. I'm just enjoying people talking about some of my favorite games.
I might get Rayman 3 gba. It's a pretty good 2d platformer for those looking for one. For the longest time I though that the Rayman Advance soundtrack was the original soundtrack. When I first heard the original soundtrack it was like finding a really good orchestrated version of one of your favourite game soundtrack. Is Hoodlum Revenge any good? I remember enjoying it as a kid but I was a kid soo...
