Mario Kart 8 Deluxe review thread

The fact of the matter is, besides unlocking car parts, there's no progression system. No real reward for being a beast because the points are accumulated essentially just from playing alot, and the rubberbanding is so ridiculous that even highly skilled players will take several losses.

Would it really have killed Nintendo to add a badge reward system like COD or some sort of trophy room? Apparently so. Online play is just a glorified time sink.

Or you know just play the game because it's fun? Why does everything have to have some dangling reward or some pointless badge system?

If the game isn't fun for you then sell it and move on.

So Nintendo now has the two highest rated games of the year(MK tied with Persona 5).

Now we'll see how ARMS does (a true test of sorts). New major IP by Nintendo. I'm really skeptical about that one.

man, what is wrong with GAF users sometimes, with zelda the reviews were paid, nostalgia.

With mario kart the nintendo bias from reviewers were are stronger than never before, glorified time sink!!!!

where was this bias with amiibo festival, mario tennis, star fox, triforce heroes, or even 1-2 switch and mario sports????? Or hell even the nintendo switch system itself?

And it's not like people gave nintendo a pass when splatoon released with few content because the game could've rated way higher if it did.

Could it be that when nintendo releases a great game they get great reviews because they are great games?

Wait, I just checked and Persona 4 is at a 93. Did a review just come out and drop it? I saw it this morning when I was checking Deluxe and I could swear it was at a 94. Deluxe is now ahead of it by one.

The reviews sounds good. Can't wait to play it again.

I wasn't planning to get it on the release day because I already owned the original on wii u and now I decided to get it on day 1. Lol

I have a weird question for all of you guys.

I played a lot of Mario Kart 8 on Wii U, but I always felt like I was "playing it wrong". Almost because I was expecting there to be some sort of over-arching "campaign mode" when in reality the game just has a bunch of course collections.

So, how do you guys like to approach Mario Kart games in single-player? Do you just do each of the track collections one-by-one at each CC? Do you just go straight for the faster CC modes? Something else?

To me it almost feels like I exhausted my interest in the game after playing through each track just a couple of times, so it's hard to replay the same tracks over and over again.

Even when I try to play tracks with different characters, it often feels like many characters are objectively worse than others, to the point where no matter how "perfect" I race it seems impossible to come in first with some characters. Do I just need to git gud?

And then for multiplayer, how do you guys like to play? Just random exhibition matches? Tournaments? Something else?

I almost exclusively play online. Good thing is this time I can switch between Battle Mode and Racing.

The game is simply thrilling in and of itself when played against real people. If there were single player unlockables, you'd just eventually get them all and it'd be done.

I do miss the mission mode from MKDS though. I'm really hoping we get a Diddy Kong Racing reboot this gen, because I always saw that as the single-player-adventure approach to the genre where Mario Kart was the multiplayer.

Nah, Persona 5 is 93 now. But, to be fair, the game has something like 40-50 reviews more than Mario Kart.

Wait, I just checked and Persona 4 is at a 93. Did a review just come out and drop it? I saw it this morning when I was checking Deluxe and I could swear it was at a 94. Deluxe is now ahead of it by one.
It went down? I thought reviews stopped coming it already. Anyways it doesn't matter, Mario Kart is gonna go down I suppose as well.

Still Smart release schedule so far from
Nintendo and boosted by the universial praise of both those games. ARMS gotta a lot to prove, would love a ARMS Direct

I don't really get how kart parts are any less of a skinner box than badges or trophies anyway.

Plus you get an exclusive gold set for playing well enough/long enough anyway.

When Switch first launched, I was really confused as to why we had to wait almost two months for Mario Kart. Now that Switches are finally starting to come back in stock, the timing looks absolutely brilliant. I'll be amazed if this doesn't cause another major rush on stock.

I definitely agree about ARMS! It certainly has a lot to prove at this point. If nothing else, I can see it turning out like Splatoon. Mixed reception at launch followed by a massively loyal fanbase.

Holy fuck those are some amazing scores! Glad to see MK8 doing well on the Switch, it'll definitely be purchased when I get my Switch, I enjoyed it on the Wii U.
What's your point?
Sadly some people can't stop their console bias from showing, instead of simply being happy that their favorite console or a console they own has gotten another great game.

The Switch is having a good start?

Considering the amount of doom and gloom around it's launch, for two months in it'll have a pretty solid library for as long as it's been out.

I've certainly played more Switch this month than I played the PS4 for the first couple months I had it.

No doubt in my mind that we are going to continue to see major supply constraints in a lot of areas - including some where it looked like the situation had improved recently. I'm not saying we will see a Wii situation with months and months of sell outs, but I can see most of May continuing to look like April and March with the stock issue, thanks to MK8D.

persona 5 should still be 94 but for no reason they dropped it to 93

Hm, haven't seen it mentioned (I'll admit I didn't look that hard) how is online being handled for this going forward? I saw the plans for splatoon 2, but do those apply for mk8d too? Will it be free online until the paid service is launched then covered under that?

While it is exciting to unlock new things, ya, I just wanna play the damn game and have fun. I don't have time to devote to that stuff.

It applies to all Switch games with online multiplayer.

Yes, it will be free until the paid service kicks in. Or at least, I don't think anything different has been communicated.

I played BOTW and MK8 on Wii U?
What does that have to do with the comparison between the launch of the Switch and the launch of the PS4?

The vast majority of games anyone liked at the launch of the PS4 were cross gen ports too. The only ones I remember being considered good that weren't were Res0gun and Killzone, and I think putting Killzone on there is a stretch.

Mario Kart DS and Mario Kart Double Dash are the last two good kart racers I've played. Mario Kart Wii was a big disappointment so it's safe to say I'm stoked for this release.

Girlfriend got me a Switch for my Bday and is trying to get into gaming (she currently addicted to Zelda). She already had this one listed as one she wanted us to get, so this is good news to hear it's a must own. Haven't played MK since the Gamecube days.

By the same team as well. I'm not sure if it'll be nearly as good but hopefully it'll be a fun time

Yes. It is.

I really wanna play the Cops and Robbers mode the most.
