I watched The Babadook over the weekend

it was really good! I really liked it. I liked how they kept setting up typical bad jumpscares, but they never actually did any of them

As long as you don't expect a coherent plot. The first half is excellent, they really nailed the look and feel of the Italian classics, but then they just cram in too much of their typical Astron-6 weirdness and it totally falls apart.

It's worth watching, but go in with realistic expectations. I over hyped it for myself because I love both Astron-6 and gialli and they obviously cared more about their jokes and references than the overall story.

Finally watched Train to Busan. Really good stuff! Reminded me a lot of 28 Days Later, as if it could fit within the same universe, just once the plague got to Korea.

Yeah, it requires a certain mood I guess. The soundtrack is awesome. It's basically the last thing Broadcast did before Trish Keenan passed away.

Agreed. It's every bit as good as pretty much all of the films it pays tribute to, IMO. Also a masterclass in generating unease almost purely through cinematography and sound design. Even the second segment that a lot of people don't like keeps me on edge the whole time.

As someone who watched all of them with my SO last year I'd say go for it if you're into the premise. The first one is ridiculously funny and it's fun to see how deep they go down the rabbit hole with their crazy ideas. The last ten minutes are the dumbest, most hilariously overdone shit ever. Love love love it.

Part 2 is the low point and just plain boring apart from the infamous 'fuck yourself' scene and the ending scene. Part 3 and 4 are where they seemingly had even less budget (which I didn't deem possible before). They are absolutely horrible because they tried to squeeze in a ridiculous narrative about otherworldly knights who fight against the djinn and use swords which are so obviously made of plastic it's not even funny. Most scenes look like they were made by fans. It's so amateurish and straight up horribly done so I guess it's worth seeing for a laugh.

TLDR: the first one is dumb fun, the rest is just trash

The first one sounds right up my alley. Definitely watching that one now. And I gotta see what this "fuck yourself" thing is about, so Part 2 is on the list too.

I'll probably get to 3 and 4 just to finish it off, but I'll go in with low expectations.

Been trying to find some good horror to stream lately. Just finished Monsters by Gareth Edwards, which was fine I guess. Not really a "thrill-ride" but it had some pretty good atmosphere and interesting concept. If the main plot had been a less of a cliche, then it'd would have been great.


edit: trying to watch VHS currently and it's just kind of a douchebag documentary.

Saw The Autopsy of Jane Doe a few months back and I thoroughly enjoyed it. Might even pick up the bluray now that it's out to add to my collection.

Was more excited about The Neon Demon than another horror film I watched over the Easter weekend, Viral. That was generic and unexciting but at least I was curious enough to finish it. The Neon Demon just confused and annoyed me

Not sure if it's all connected with the other two movies, they could be since the "tape" shows the same thing with some new additions.

I don't think the tickle analogy is fair. I'd say it's more like a comic who does nothing but make fart jokes versus one who does intricate bits. Horror movies that are the equivalent of a Stewart Lee set are hard to make, rare, and special. But I don't think there's anything wrong with horror movie equivalents of early South Park episodes. They're easier to do, but rewarding when done well. I have many friends who like horror movies, but only if they contain good jump scares. I think that's fair enough.

That said, I understand getting burnt out on jump scare flicks when you haven't enjoyed a really atmospheric, insidious horror film in a while, like The Witch. Myself, I'd enjoy a good jump scare movie at this point. Feels like the last one of those I saw was Dead Silence, which also happened to offer a fantastically creepy and bizarre story.

Nothing wrong with some jump scares, as long as the movie isn't solely dependent on it. Just some trashy horror flicks have zero tension, fear building, or sense of dread. They pretty much are just all about jump scares left and right to try and make you scared and when the movie is basically the audience sitting there waiting for the next jump scare... yea that's pretty crappy horror.

It's a commentary but you'll still have fun with it


Jumpscares are fine if you set them up well. They can't carry your film.

Just saw Wishmaster and am a bit underwhelmed. Movie got a lot of potential but wasted it on beeing a Nightmare Rip-Off.
Gonna write a bit more tomorrow. But still. A bit disappointed.

Just finished watching it myself, and honestly didn't think it was bad at all. I haven't read any reviews, so I'm not sure what the general consensus is, but I enjoyed it for the most part. Some of the plot fell short,
specifically the trend-hopping with the whole "girls held captive" thing - don't think it really worked in this scenario, or at least could have been executed far better than what it was. Just seemed like it was done for the sake of being done, rather than it organically falling inline with the origin story already presented in the previous films.
That being said, I thought the overall production was really solid and the pacing of the film captured the mood perfectly. It wasn't overly scary, but I don't think it was trying to be - which is a good thing for me.

I have a feeling most people probably didn't like the movie that much, buttt.. I did!

Also, Alex Roe (Holt) is hot.

I saw Sweet, Sweet Lonely Girl last night, and felt a bit mixed about it. It wasn't that good of a horror movie as a whole, but it was fittingly moody, and at times somewhat disturbing, despite of the scarcity of the actual horror elements. If you want to see it, be prepared for a slow-paced experience.

There was a 30-minute Lovecraftian Finnish movie, Sound from the Deep, shown before it. It was surprisingly epic, with pretty convincing CGI effects for an indie flick. The rather stiff English dialogue was a bit hard on the ears, but it was probably a better choice than Finnish. Recommended for fans of Lovecraft. Both films had fittingly distressing soundtracks as well.

There was a trailer posted in OT (maybe) or something of a horror movie with a shot of a dog running towards the camera at night (again, maybe) that looked intriguing as hell but i can't remember what the fuck it was...if anyona could help me out lol it's driving me nuts

Anyway, re-watching tonight The Green Room and maybe The VVitch since i got the BD from amazon today

It Comes at Night? It doesn't have a dog running towards the camera at night lol but there's a dog barking at the nothing and the poster kind of reminds me of what you said.

I watched RAW last night and... I liked the movie just fine. It has a lot funny moments... but I'm not sure I'd call it a horror movie (and I usually have a very a broad definition of that). The movie is a bit predictable if you have seen the trailer or have read the synopsis. It doesn't have any twists (IMO) and I felt that the tension was almost non existent. I think it is still worth a watch but I think the marketing has been presenting this film the wrong way. Also, it is not that graphic. I feel that any Saw movie is way more gory than this. I usually squirm at cannibalism/body horror but I could get through this just fine.

So i've been editing these old french canadian TV drama/comedy into horror movie trailers, i'm not posting them here because well... obviously they don't have the same impact if you can't understand them, but I wanted to ask you guys :

what are your favorite/least favorite tropes in horror movie trailers? especially in terms of editing, but anything really, it could help me have some ideas

I've been using the piano notes on cues a lot, and the fast flashes of images (someone crying, etc)
