Mario Kart 8 Deluxe review thread

jts

...hate me...
I am kinda interested in this game, but will not buy it until we know more about the payed online service. Playing online will mainly be how I play this, and I don't want to buy something without knowing how much it will cost to keep playing next year. Have the same thing with splatoon 2, but I expect we will know more when that game launches.
You can buy physical and then resell it. I'm sure it will hold a lot of value and you'll get more than your money's worth with the single player, local multi and online multi until the paid service launches.

The Japanese price is around $25 a year

Yeah, for everything tested for loading times so far, internal > SD card > cart.

Mario Kart 8 will have the honour of being on internal for me.

So just to make sure I download Mario Kart 8 DX to the internal, all I have to do is remove the Micro SD card and I'm good to go?

I won't get any errors about the Micro SD not being in there?

I broke and preordered this. Not a big fan of Kart racers generally but i've enjoyed them more portably than on a console so being able to do both should be neat. Skipped MK8 on Wii U so it'll all be new to me
as new as a Kart racer can feel at least.

Possible, mario kart is a game I really would like to have digitally though. Would be nice to pick up my switch and play a few races regardless of which game is currently in my card slot.

The Japanese price is around $25 a year

That would be fine, but I still rather wait for official news.

How long are the load times for the digital version downloaded to the internal storage compared to physical? I'm really not sure whether to go physical or digital. If I went with the former, I would save £5 and have the case (I already have the physical versions of Zelda and Lego City), but with the latter I would have the convenience of always having the game ready and potentially notably shorter load times.

It's a pity there's no vertical stand/split screen options. I think 2 Player would work better with that orientation

(sorry for bad PS skills);

Yeah, could you do 12 players with 6 Switches I wonder? Would be cool for local tournaments.

Everything says it's 8 player local, so 12 players definitely isn't possible. But then if you have that much setup, you might be able to connect online anyway and do 12 players.

I wish 4 player splitscreen + 2 Switches was a thing like Double Dash, but alas.

Don't know if it's been answered yet, but has the stat bars only being halfway filled bring the stat back to the lower number?

For example, if you had 3 and a half bars filled in for speed, it was actually only 3 bars.

You are moving goalposts. How much a platform holder charges for their new games in their digital store and whether they have huge sales and other offers are two different things. Nintendo also had free games offers with MK8 on the Wii U and with certain 3DS games. Nintendo also had the customer loyalty program a.ka. exclusive Club Nintendo items. They all had their own offers and promotions. They just do it differently. I doubt you remember all that, maybe because you are biased...tsk tsk /s.

No, doing it differently may also mean doing it worse and promotions for Wii U and the occasional rare promotions Nintendo makes are not really comparable to how both MS and Sony and Apple and Valve and Google and Amazon... handle their digital marketplace. There is not even a cart option for the eShop yet, but that is not exactly the place but Inconcede you as much.

The way they price content and the sales and promotions they offer factor in their customer experience and average lifetime player value and how to retain their consumers... else they are making dumb not data and value driven decisions, simple as that. Still, if it makes you feel better to think we could all end up getting screwed by all digital marketplaces more and more as they become the only way to access games (some more and some less) and we lose consumer rights... well... ;).

I do remember their promotions as I remember me being a 3DS ambassador, getting the Metrod demo at DS's launch (and enjoying the non gaming features of DS and 3DS immmensely), etc... you are right, I have been keeping up an expensive charade for all theee years just for the proviledge of defending my obvious bias and criticise Nintendo. I need to remember that I can either buy their games and liking whatever they decide or just not post in anything Nintendo related... /s.

Not sure if this is possible but does anyone know where I could buy just the case for Mario Kart 8 Deluxe. I want to buy the game digitally but I also want the physical case because I like to have the physical cases for games lol. I haven't done it before but decided might as well start now for titles I want to have always on my system (MK8D, Smash etc).

First screen of MK8 running in splitscreen with 4 players on the tablet:

I love it, kinda cute.
Coming from the CRT era, this is playable. It's not like it's a shooter and you need to pick out something on the horizon, the camera is at the perfect angle to give enough FOV around and down the track. I've played 5 player NSMBU off-TV in a hotel lobby during a family reunion, this will be a breeze.

The revamped Battle mode sounds amazing, it's the single biggest temptation for me to get a Switch now. From the looks of it this may finally topple Mario Kart DS as my favorite ever.

MK Deluxe has climbed up again on amazon.co.UK: it's now their 3rd best selling game in 2017: https://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/bestsellers/2017/videogames/ref=zg_bs_tab_t_bsar#1

Considering it's UK, it's impressive.

In the US it has climbed up to 2nd place, behind Zelda: https://www.amazon.com/gp/bestsellers/2017/videogames/ref=zg_bs_tab_t_bsar#1

We are looking at phenomenal sales.

it's probably just existing fans buying it. after the first 8.5m, i expect sales to drop sharply.

Dang this load-time thing is nagging at me because the cart is $10 off if you preorder at Amazon w/ Prime, but afaik there aren't any such deals for digital so not sure I want to pay the extra just for that.

Let's wait about 7 years and then see what the sale are because you know it's not even a holiday and there are people who just buy things so we can't say for sure if this is good or not and it's not like it broke PS4 sales or anything and the Wii U wasn't on shelves at one point too so you know I really doubt this is an indicator of anything actually.

sorry to disappoint but you're not gonna need to wait seven years to see how much the sales of this are blowing up

Unfortunately I don't think so because the deal is just for preordering. Guess I just have to bite the bullet. Is the X>Y>Z based on any detailed analysis? Wondering what the jump is for internal over SD b/c I have a 256GB SD I'd rather put this on if it's mostly the same.

edit: nm found a good one (for zelda) that i'm sure was posted earlier but i just missed it https://www.youtube.com/watch?time_continue=281&v=vbItTEmozxw

I bought MK8 at launch for the Wii U but ended up trading it in and never got around to the DLC, this deluxe edition always seemed like a sound release that made a lot of sense for the Switch but I was never in the mind to repurchase it for the Switch but I'm starting to get a little hyped. I've got some clubcard points that I could use to get it a little cheaper....

Really wished that Amazon Prime discount applied to Digital copies as well.

This is a game I rather get digital.

The digital version on Amazon Japan is a bit cheaper. The conversion comes out to I think $54 or $55 but I don't know if it's worth it. The US eShop listing only showed English, Spanish, and French as supported languages the last time I checked (but I think a GameXplain video debunked that) ... the Japanese eShop listing shows a lot more languages supported, including English. I'm inclined to think the Japanese version is correct.

I preordered a physical NA copy, so I'm not going to worry about it but I did wonder if the Japanese and US versions are slightly different in their language support or if they're indeed the same game. Also, given how some online titles like TriForce Heroes were locked to regional servers ... do Switch games prioritize servers based on IP location, system region settings, game region was bought, or Nintendo account settings?

I played 2 players split screen Mario Kart in Nintendo's mock airplane environment. The Joycons alone felt surprisingly good to me and with the Switch on the folding tray my buddy and I had plenty of viewing space. Yeah 4 players is going to get crowded but I imagine anyone playing on the go like that will he huddled together in some train, plain or taxi cab(all the choice is hip) where they would be piled on top of each other anyway.

It'll be fine for anyone who wants it while the rest of us have our own Switch or just play on TV.
