Mario Kart 8 Deluxe review thread

Dang this load-time thing is nagging at me because the cart is $10 off if you preorder at Amazon w/ Prime, but afaik there aren't any such deals for digital so not sure I want to pay the extra just for that.
I saw that, I'm conflicted.

I just played the wii u game with my friend online, and it was absolutely amazing. This game seems like one I'd play at any time randomly until the system is replaced by a new generation (or another Mario Kart) so i'd like to have it downloaded, but it's cheaper for the boxed copy. I need to decide soon.

Does the digital copy load faster?

I'm going digital because MK8 is an all-time fave and I want to be able to bounce seamlessly between it and Zelda without bumping Zelda from the cartridge slot.

Generally speaking, I think I'll get all multiplayer titles digitally on Switch. Thinking of Switch as my own personal arcade, it'll soon have ARMS and Splatoon 2, as well. <3

Your reasoning mirrors mine. Zelda isn't getting bumped.

I want to go digital, I even bought a memory card for the Switch, but the lack of discount like physical has turned me away from it. I don't like it, but it is what it is.

It does? The Witcher 3, Bloodborne, and Zelda BotW all at least had framerate issues at launch and all got raving reviews.

I agree, I think if the overall game is better than the some of its questionable frametrare and textures, its deserving of those great scores, blood borne and witcher 3 had slow down but overall they were amazing experiences with moments that will stick with me for the whole generation, same with breath of the wild and life is strange

That video just sold me. Been so long since a good battle mode that I forgot how insane it was. Just watching that put a big stupid grin on my face.

First screen of MK8 running in splitscreen with 4 players on the tablet:

Not bad, not bad!

What's the issue with load times and this game? Not aware of it. Anyone know?

Not sure if this is the right thread, but will I be able to play with my brother online and queue up together in a standard online lobby? Or can we only play eachother?

Smart Steering is awesome. My 5yo daughter absolutely loves MK8 but sometimes she just gets hopelessly stuck off track. Now yeah I could just tell her to gitgud but we're just trying to have fun here. And now even our 3yo can play with us.

Hm then I wonder what that poster was on about his load time dilemma?
Yeah sorry this is just about relative speed of load times among formats, with system storage being the fastest and cart being the slowest, not about load times being bad on any format at all. I'm not aware of whether anyone has tested this on MK but here's the Zelda comparison I found earlier: https://www.youtube.com/watch?time_continue=281&v=vbItTEmozxw

GameXplain just put up an amazing Shine Thief online battle:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Jt17vJQx-Lk&feature=youtu.be

It was a fantastic match, I think everyone had the shine at one point or another. I'm the NomComms guy, nearly won around the half way point!

I haven't been following much about MK8D (was originally set on passing on it, though now I'm not so sure) so this was the first time I noticed that on the Splatoon stage, as you would expect of Splatoon, one ink colour acts as a speed boost while the other ink colour slows you down. Does this differentiate between teams for two-team modes like Renegade Roundup, or do the colours always act the same way for everybody? And do they ever change between rounds?

I'm going physical over digital. Can't resist the box art, etc.

After iOS gaming for so long I miss having a thing to hold. Although I'm sure I'll regret this after having to go back and forth between the zelda and Mario Kart cartridge a million times.

Dat Amazon discount though.

I decided to go digital for this, as my thinking is that I'll always want immediate access to MK8D, as well as Splatoon 2 and ARMS (If ARMS is good. I'm sure it will be). This is a hard decision as I've been conditioned to buy physical games for decades, but the reality is I'll never have a desire to sell those games, and it's not like they'll become extremely valuable as collector pieces due to the sheer volume of physical copies that will be produced. I'll gladly buy single-player/story-based games on card - so far I have BOTW and I Am Setsuna - but for multiplayer spills and thrills, gimme that sweet instant accessibility! I came to this decision prior to learning of the improved loading times for MK8D. Not that it would have swayed me conclusively, but it's a nice bonus for digital if nothing else.

I would do too but 50e physical vs 60e digital make me go physical again

Soooo the reviewers this gen aren't tougher as we all thought or maybe they just think Nintendo games are on a league of thier own?

Up untill recently 93 was the highest score in more than 3 years, Switch just got out and it already has 2 games above this benchmark.

I guess it just already has 2 games that are that good.

So this time if I ever change my console, I can log in with my account in the new one with no problems and get my purchases back? Do I ever have to unlink my account from my current console?

Yes and you don't have to unlink your account.

It links to the new system once you log in.

Coming from the CRT era, this is playable. It's not like it's a shooter and you need to pick out something on the horizon, the camera is at the perfect angle to give enough FOV around and down the track. I've played 5 player NSMBU off-TV in a hotel lobby during a family reunion, this will be a breeze.

8 player Bomberman works in tabletop mode too. From what I understand whatever works in TV mode also automatically works in tabletop mode. They just don't advertise it because it's not ideal. That and it can cause confusion when local play comes into it (For example on Mario Kart you can't connect two Switch consoles to play 8 player. Local Play is called at 2 per Switch).

..
Also, can't wait for this. I really, really want to grab Persona 5, but it's going to have to wait a little longer. Too much backlog, and MP Mario Kart with the mates is too much to resist.
Or maybe I'll just be an idiot and buy both and add to my stupid backlog like I usually do.

This confused me at first but the wheels on the player kart in that video just happen to be purple ones, rather than indicating something, the ink is supposed to fade off but it's hard to tell here!
I'm wondering if any fresh ink on your tires boosts you as long as you stay on the same colour, then slows you if you go on to the opposite before it's faded away.

Maybe, just maybe they are good games.....? Zelda for sure definatly deserves it.

That would be cool but I just did some tests and the ink slows you down no matter if you're playing teams or not. It's also always green and purple.
