Found Out My Friend is a Flat Earther Today...

your friend is dumb, but trashing him on a message board is kind of lame, since this particular kind of stupidity doesn't necessarily make him a bad person or friend

Coast to Coast AM has had some excellent segments that cover topics such as flat earth theory, hollow earth theory, etc. I've found the hollow earth pieces to be exceptional.

Also, for those who are interested, they just had a great segment on the hollow moon theory. Summary below:

Exceptionally dumb, surely.

They're going to be so disappointed when they maintain a course due west of California and don't end up in Antarctica.

Following a latitudinal line will still cause you to reach the same starting point, even if the Earth were a flat surface.

When trying that line of reasoning, point out that following a latitudinal line at a certain distance north of the equator would be a smaller distance than following an equidistant latitudinal line south of the equator.

That should sufficiently shut them up.

There are just so many ways to verify that the earth isn't flat.

Like you can literally stand on a mountain and observe that the earth is round.

Don't worry, I'll vouch for them.
Because they believe the true map of Earth is something like this:

Flat_earth.png

So you will only need walls of ice around the south pole (the whole Earth border) and circumnavigation is possible because you are actually doing circles around the north pole (center of the flat Earth map).

Still silly as hell, but they can came with explanations for everything (still the simplest explanation should be the Earth is not flat.....)
But then how do they explain the photos from space?

Proof that the Hollow Head theory exists.

Doesn't differing timezones debunk that globe? If it were true we'd have the sun at the same time no matter the geographical location.

I've seen this car driving around my city for awhile that has this stuff all over it. "Flat Earth" on one windshield. "The Earth is flat!" on another. My favorite is one that just says, "Look it up". Even has some goofy flat Earth model on the roof. I thought it was some dumb joke. It was awhile before I found out there's actually a legion of people who believe this nonsense.

I don't get people saying that this isn't threadworthy. Being reminded how easily a person can be tricked by snake-oil-salesmen is always good.

OP clearly considered his pal a smart guy and in the end he fell for this idiocy.

It could had been a pyramidal scheme or anti-vax bullshit damaging his sons(if he has any) and everyone else.

And if people stop believing in something simple like the Earth's shape, how are they gonna understand something vital to our survival as climate change?

Those morons are the ones that vote for climate deniers.

His friend could have been yours, a member of your family, ever your son or daughter. We should take this as a lesson of no taking things for granted.

If someday I end with children in my care, I will talk with them about cases like this, and recommend them books like The Demon-Haunted World, that I was lucky enough to read as a child before I had access to the Internet and all its wacky bullshit. Who knows, maybe I could have been a flat-earther too.

I want one of these people to buy a boat and try to sail to the ice wall.
Even easier, buy a weather balloon, and tie a video camera and a GPS tracker to find it. Boom, instant video of a flat Earth.

Unless, of course, cameras have instant Earth detection software and immediately converts the image to a round Earth. Holy shit, they thought of everything!

Satellites don't exist, photoshop does

You know you can see the ISS with the naked eye, right?
I've done it myself. I guess I'm part of the conspiracy now. Where are my checks?

I've seen it cited, and even if it hasn't been cited, that really isn't relevant as to whether said pictures could be explained away by practical effects

That's correct, but I still haven't seen it used, which is entirely my point in explaining that they use the CGI/Photoshop defense in every case.

The only practical effects claim I've seen come from moon landing hoaxers. They often overlap, but the claims pertinent to both do not arise in the same discussions.

I don't know why do people get mad and upset if someone is a flat earth believer. I am one myself because of what I see with my own eyes.

I don't engage with people who believe in this crap. If your brain can't figure out why the earth is a sphere, then I don't want to entertain anything else you are incapable of understanding. Good day sir (or madam).

Also in the same category: chem trails, pyramid schemes, Illuminati esk organizations, ghosts, etc.

I don't get mad, I just feel a little sorry for them. Day-to-day life must be a bit more difficult with such a tiny, poorly developed brain.

My brain is not poorly developed. I believe in the flat Earth and did a few observations these past few times I have flown on an airplane (about 10-12 times this past year) and I have seen the horizon totally flat with no curvature.

Mother fucker.

If the moon was hollow it would have floated away in to space long before humans ever came in to existence and wouldn't be able to affect the tides on Earth because gravitational effects depend entirely on mass.

The earth isn't hollow either for the exact same reasons

It's incredible watching people claim stupid shit.

The horizon doesn't appear flat when you're on a plane on a clear day. You either need to get your eyes checked or stop seeing what you want to see.

It's not a case of simple observations like looking out a window (which anyone can prove the flat earth idea wrong by building a Foucault pendulum, among tens if not hundreds of other simple experiments anyone can do), you'd need to disprove centuries of mathematics and physics.

Which none of you can do because nobody who believes in flat earth nonsense can even begin to vaguely comprehend how you'd do that because it's not possible because you're all completely wrong.

So the entire scientific community is lying to us for reasons?

I am not being sarcastic or any of that non sense. I am being real with my observations and I am a firm believer that the Earth is flat. For me to believe otherwise I would have to go out in space and see it for myself with my own eyes.

Please remember that the flat earth isn't the important part of the belief system; it's the belief that every scientist and expert who has ever lived is a liar and part of an impossibly convoluted conspiracy theory. That belief, in a world of highly organized liars, is what they need to cling to. Whether it's a flat earth or young earth or whatever other theory that flies in the face of literally everything we know, the key is that it has to be a statement of opposition to all of these people out there who think they're smarter than us.

There's an emotional need for that belief that I don't fully understand, but it is very common. You see less crazy versions of it in global warming deniers and other anti-science movements. The key is, "If this makes scientists angry, then I must be doing something right."

Maybe it's just people who've been made to feel dumb their whole lives getting a chance to feel smarter than everyone else.

Just sneak into Antarctica and go to the Wall with a video camera. You'd be famous!

So you don't believe in satellite imagery?

I am fascinated by this, how do you explain it being light in Australia and dark in America? Or do you not believe in that without being in two places at once?

Like, how is the Earth flat? What's on the other side?

I convinced my space nerd gf that I was flat earther for about a year, we'd have long debates where she would become legitimately distressed and angry.

I eventually told her I was just messing with her, she doesn't believe me.... thinks I'm just pretending to be a sphere-earther(?) just to placate her.
Maybe don't be stupid?

So to get to the story...
He messages me today on Facebook. My man just got back from a vacation in Cali and wanted to share his experiences with me. We're talking and laughing and sharing jokes are two good friends do. He brings up the fact that there was a cat he ran into that looked like me and that his "energy" was similar to mine. This energy was calming to him since it reminded him of me. What a cute sentiment, right?

I'm sorry, but it sounds like your friend is developing a mental illness. My roommate in college used to be my best friend, and was a completely normal guy, but in recent years has been sending me crazier and crazier stuff on facebook (only a few times a year, stuff about conspiracies and multiple planes of awareness, etc).

His mother was diagnosed schizophrenic (at least if I'm remembering correctly), and unfortunately it seems like it runs in the family. It's heartbreaking, and every time he messages me I try to be friendly but end them as quickly as possible because it's painful.

If that's what's happening here then you have my condolences, it's really shitty.

No, you wouldn't. You just choose to be obtuse and wrong for whatever reason.

Go to the ocean, wait for a ship to come over the horizon and you'll see the sails first because of the earth's curvature.

For fucks sake, people have known the Earth and every other planet is a spherical object for millennia.

I am gonna subscribe to this thread for the drama it will definitely ensue. lol

Ive flight on planes too, curvatures are not hard to notice.

So how do you explain the moon being out when it's light outside and if you look at the moon, you can actually see the blue sky through the moon.

You're wrong, it's only been about 500-600 years since the earth was considered to be "round"

The moon isn't the sun.

It's been >2,200 years.

Because the moon is rotating around the Earth, the night time doesn't rise with the moon. And you don't see through the moon at all.
