I experimented with different camera angles and facial expressions. The faces seem pretty consistent, especially "young" me. I didn't look like that, but it's the spitting image of one of my cousins at the same age. It's me, I mean, it's like looking in the mirror except it's not me. I can totally see the resemblance with my father too.
It's like staring into a time machine and after a while, going back to the original photo feels like "omg, I look young !"

It may be because the algorithm likely uses celebrity photos as its baseline. It makes sense from a practical point of view since celebrities have lots of photos on the Internet for an AI to comb through.

Another part of is that it has to approximate things like hair and complexion. People's female counterparts are given salon-beautiful hair, clear skin and perfect make-up. Any woman can look hot after a day of pampering. The AI approximates hair especially makes a huge difference.

Finally, it may not take into account things such as the individual person's hypothetical reaction to estrogen and testosterone. I imagine it assumes some kind of an average based on what known sibling pairs look like.
