Project CARS 2 discussion thread (provisional release date: Septemberish 2017)

I just tried the combo shown in the video with the latest build and I honestly have no problems to handle the car properly. In fact, I'd say it is even too easy.

Using XboxOne controller.

Did you ever play pCARS with a pad, Fres?

I've tried it a couple of times out of curiosity and had a hard enough job even keeping the car straight, never mind trying to go around bends.

Tried a bit a long time ago, everything default. Thought they were awful.

They are awful, but not unplayable, I managed the best part of 300hrs with a pad, I feel like I need a medal, or something.

I just watched the video again and I would take the whole thing with a grain of salt. I don't want to take anything from VVV as I'm sure they are doing their best effort. But hearing the comment about the AI doing weird things during the last lap makes me wonder in what conditions they recorded this video.

That last lap is not a bug, it's not the AI doing crazy things. It's the cooldown lap and that's why the AI goes so slow. So, yeah, I think SMS should handle things better with how they inform the media about what they are about to play and also review deeply what they offer them, because it's so easy to create a case out of nothing.

Going by what they are saying at WMD, they are well aware of the problem with their approach, so things should be better going forward.

Divisive opinion incoming, but I really don't think games that position themselves as driving simulators (and I mean anywhere on that scale) should prioritise pad controls over steering wheels. I'd convinced myself for years that I didn't need a wheel but as soon as I tried an (admittedly very shitty) Xbox 360 wheel back in the day, I realised how much time and control I was leaving on the table.

I'm not saying they shouldn't put the effort in to make a great experience on a controller, but for certain games (like this) really don't see the point.

pCars was fucking terrible with a pad. Also, insert most other driving games since the PS2 era into that sentence as well.

PCars was absolutely shite with a controller but I can't say I agree with that last sentence at all. I've played a lot of console and PC racing games since the PS2 era that have had great handling with a controller, PCars is in a (shit)league of its own in that regard.

Forza, GT, Assetto Corsa, Dirt Rally, hell even older PC games like GTR2, Nascar Racing 2003, Richard Burns Rally and F1 Challenge 99-02 all handle great with a controller.

Interesting! I can't remember from the video, but surely there's some kind of message to tell you that the race has ended? Soe dude waving a chequered flag or something? Some 'cooldown lap' notification or something? I love the concept of cooldown laps, by the way. Ditto for formation laps.

As an aside, has anyone at WMD2 been shown any console footage at all? Like anything whatsoever? Any word on how development of that side is going? Is it in tandem with the PC version or are versions ported when the PC one is nearly done?

Quite simple, walk in a room, time for one race on limited demo, move to next pod.

It's always busy at these events, getting everything done, not like being in the comfort of your own home.

I don't think there's a message yet? But it' common sense (once you know there's a cooldown lap). The timer is out, you cross the line, it's cooldown lap time. Problem is VVV probably weren't informed of the existence of a cooldown lap.

Edit: Forgot to answer on the console side because I don't have anything to answer. I know there will be at least a beta. But it will probably be WMD2 only.

I really didn't mean to be ill intended. It's certainly not your fault to judge things on the conditions you are given. I'm just doubting the conditions.

It amazes me they shipped the game on consoles with that level of pad support. Thinking it didn't get as much shit in reviews due most reviewers using traction/stability control and not having to counter-steer at all.

For what is worth, these are on in real life for the most popular disciplines (GT3/4, and LMP1/2/3).

The FFB on a wheel wasnt all that great either. In a post AC world they really need to improve it.

Yes I am aware, but I assume most casual drivers will leave assists on for all cars and not witness the horror of countersteering with a pad without proper filtering.

They have a LOT to learn from AC. AC went for quality over quantity, PCars went for the opposite in most cases.

The way they implemented their wheel settings was completely unacceptable. Having to deep dive into the settings on a per car basis was horrible and time consuming. Keep the customization but set a base for whats acceptable out of the box.

I'm pretty sure everything mentioned in the last few posts has been acknowledged by SMS and is being worked on for pcars 2.

The plot twist is awesome, huh?

"Ian Bell is an asshole, he's a liar and a bully, Project Cars is shit, same as every other game that guy has been involved with."

"Ian Bell is an awesome dude, and so am I, that's why my buddy Ian gave me a job, and Project Cars is ACE and through my awesomeness I will help make it even ACER!"

Can you expand on that?, have I missed something?

He works for/with SMS now, is in some kind of advisor position, and "was able to quit his job at a prominent car rental", as per his own words.

Fucking LOL, you couldn't make it up!

So he's basically become everything he fought against, filthy lucre indeed.

He is not lying, though.

He is being paid to do what he did in PRC, just internally and before the game is released. The guy has a QA mentality that most people just don't have.

So now he's on SMS's side he's an OK guy?, jesus, short memories or what.

We're talking about a guy who would regularly rip PCars to bits, regularly rip Ian Bell to bits and regularly call anyone in WMD or anyone who said anything positive about PCars a shill.

I have never read or cared for PRC. I didn't know it was a thing until just recently. You might be reading too much into my comment.

I'm just saying he is not lying about what his work is and what he is doing at WMD2. Maybe being able to read what he writes there helps me in knowing whether he is lying or not?

Just the fact that he spoke all that jazz about SMS and PCars in the past, but is now singing it's praises, which is a massive 180, means I couldn't take anything he says (not that I did anyway) at face value.

I bet there's more than just a sense of suspicion and trepidation from a lot of WMD members about this. It's a very, very odd situation, given his history.

SMS are sponsoring his racing career as well, aren't they? And didn't they buy the guy a killer gaming PC too?

Curiouser and curiouser...

Still, if makes the final game better by inviting more focussed criticism then I'm all for it.

I'm not keen on what jazz he spoke or how true to reality that jazz was. In fact, I had not read that article either until Mascot posted it and you started debating it. After reading it, I'm detecting no lies.

Sure it doesn't sounds good for his credibility. But sometimes the wolf is coming, you know.

I love the delicacy of this terminology against the background of the subject matter..!

I potsed about Austin (PRC) being in bed with SMS ages ago! Only now it's news? :)

Austin apparently asked Ian Bell for a race car with SMS/pCARS 2 livery and to bug hunt; Ian agreed and is paid well enough to quit his job at a car rental company.

Make of that what you will :)

Yeah, first time I'd seen anything about it, I didn't really frequent PRC much, there is only so much vitriol and venom one can take in daily life, but fairplay to Ian for putting a gag on this clownshoe!

It'll certainly be interesting to see if any differences emerge between the way Austin covers pCARS 2 compared to other sims. I'm guessing his criticism will remain as sharp as ever with just the language being tempered somewhat so that it's not as directly insulting to devs as it has been in the past.

It might even mean that his whole general approach to the site becomes more constructive and respectful. His bile can no longer be selectively spewed, that's for sure. It'll mean a fundamental change to his M.O. but it might benefit PRC in the long run. On the other hand, he might completely lose the fan base that go there just to hear Angry Kid have incoherent tantrums about car games.

I'm sure I read that he can't post anything related to PCars 2 without running it by SMS first.

Hahaha oh wow. Are there any more infos about this arrangement? I want to know what kind of race car he got.

nice! Looks like some really cool and complicated tire model if the physics layer of tire calculations can be translated to visual deformation like that.

Slightly more optimistic again now, after that nVidia video with the car vibrations and outer tire lock-up. Who knows, maybe that was just a not-final spring/damper setup for that car and the smoke was not from tire lock-up, but from an overheated brake disc.

Then again, too much complexity can lead to disaster much easier. Fingers crossed.

Live For Speed was doing this kind of thing 10 years ago though......

Not that the PCars 2 deformation is any less impressive because of that.

So these fuckwit devs decided not to improve gamepad support after PC1 controlled dismally. Just incredible. I suppose final judgment should be reserved for September but I ain't holding my breath for major improvements.

I know, rFactor 1 as well, it was so advanced that it's still used in many professional simulators as the physics base. Even Driveclub has visual tire flex. It all doesn't say much, but Mascots video still looked cool and impressive.

It certainly does. It's also quite old footage, I believe, so the newer builds should be even more impressive. I inadvertently caused a bit of a rumpus over at GTP by querying why old footage was being released if newer, better stuff was available. Hopefully we'll see this newer stuff in due course.

The big question is does visual tyre flex actually improve the sim or is it just a visual representation? Great feat by SMS to have it added to pCARS 2 as it would have taken some work to add.

Without meaning to be a pedant, ISI/Studio 397 state rFactor Pro is used by many professional teams; much of the improvement made to rFactor was used to create rFactor 2 and rFactor Pro. I wish we had the rF Pro laser scanned Nurburgring that has been shown many times in rF2.

PS: All sims need these cars - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=K0YCGF3ncEY

I've tried to search online but can't find a definitive answer so maybe someone here can help please?

Thinking of not purchasing GTS and looking to set up a somewhat racing sim and giving Project Cars 2 a try in September'ish!

Looking to use aura transducers x2 with required amps (?) but as a console can't have a moving simulator unless I spend big bucks (I recently made a thread on it but no-one viewed or replied lol). So a shaker set up will have to do (for now). Already got a Wheel Stand Pro so just need a seat.

Anyways, Project Cars 1 is available on psn till tonight (uk) for £12 so would like to get it just to have a mess about till PC2.

However, I'd like to know if Nascar is included in PC1 along with the Indianapolis Motor Speedway. Had a look a youtube and still can't find out.

Does anybody know? Is there a list of all tracks/cars for ps4?

Cheers :)
