Should the next Smash game come with all characters unlocked?

Yes.

without a doubt. Add a single player to unlock shit in, but Arcade, training and MP should have all chars unlocked.

They need to work out a way to appease both. Respect the time of those who want to play the full experience immediately, and allow those who want to earn the full roster to do so. If I only have a few hours to hang, this still becomes a problem.

The solution could be a cheat code, or paid/free DLC unlock.

Hmmm. I could see the value in a code you must reenter every time you turn on the game. Gives you the full roster right away but if you want to keep it without inputting the code every time you have to unlock each character proper.

This could work, basically make it like shadow mewtwo in pokken: Have an unlock method you have to input every time you wanna use him (card) until you unlock him in story mode.

Oh, an amiibo Smash card packed-in that worked like this could please all

Unlocking content, as a primarily single-player gamer, is crucial to my experience. In Melee, I would occasionally delete my save data so I could unlock all the content again.

But I understand that competitive players need all the content available from the get-go and I support a code or a mode that opens these features at the start.

It's too bad, because the newer methods of unlocking characters are really uninspired. I want more unique unlock conditions that simply fighting ten matches.

At least the ones they announce in trailers because there really isn't a surprise other than how to unlock it. If they keep the character a secret then definitely keep it behind as a unlock.

On one hand I love unlocking characters, but on the other it sucks trying to play the game competitively. I think I'd put in a really easy cheat code to unlock everything for those serious enough.

No. I want to unlock at least half the cast. Or at least, I would, if they hadn't gutted the single player options compared to Brawl and even Melee.

They should probably have a cheat code or menu option to just unlock everything though.

Absolutely. It is beyond tedious having to unlock over a dozen characters, especially when they've been featured in previous Smash games. In the age of leaks and datamining, any thrill a new challenger could present is non-existent when nearly every character and the unlock method is revealed prior to launch. If they can't give you a cheat code to unlock it, then abolish the system.

No

Gimmie the OG 10 and make the rest unlockable. Unlockabke behind real content, of course

If y'all don't want to wait just do a $5 dlc or an "I'm impatient" button

Edit: and don't reveal them all before the fucking thing drops.

Unlocking is fun if their portrait is on the character select already. Otherwise, I've seen many kids with their games being incomplete not even aware that [X] person is playable.

An amendment to my cheat code option - they should hire Kojima to come up with a PT level secret code that unlocks everything, something that would require the entire internet coming together to figure out, that way Nintendo doesn't feel like they're just giving it out for free

Is it a port? Yes unlock them all right away.

Is it a sequel? Yes, keep a couple of secret characters locked. Don't announce them either, that stuff blew my mind in Melee!

No because it's super easy to unlock them as is with the various methods. You can just have computer versus matches to get everything.

As someone who plays singleplayer Smash for quite a bit when I first get the game I love the feeling of unlocking new characters through my singleplayer actions.

Then, let people have the option.

If it's just a port, then yes.

If it's a new game, then just let me unlock them easily if I'm not that person who wants to wait to have the character that they'll inevitably spend all of their time on anyway.

I don't want guests coming over not able to play characters because I don't have them.

Smash 5, no, because it's a new Smash game.

However, if there's a Smash 4 port for Switch, yes, 100% (and also unlock all stages and custom moves while you're at it). I don't want to re-unlock everything in that game again.

If it's a Switch port, yes. If it's an all-new game, no.

Why does it matter if it's a port or not? Because it ruins the surprise? Not like there's any of that anymore.

Maybe next time they could do a Splatoon like release where the roster could be updated once a month or every couple weeks with a new character.

The fanbase would flip, I think.

They should have some sort of cheat code to press to unlock everyone for those who want to rush in, a lot of people (including myself) enjoy the unlock fights.

This is the most rational course of action, in my opinion.

Make it an option in the settings. Make it as simple as possible for people to just unlock everything for tournaments and stuff; but also let me have the fun of gradually unlocking new characters.

Actually like this idea a lot. I'm a fan of the unlocks because they give me a reward-structure that keeps me playing the single player stuff when I don't have people over. This would satisfy both sides I think.

Unlockables are essentially the only carrot for the single player in these sorts of games, so I'd like more unlockables, not less. Single player is a big draw for me. Starting off with just the original N64 cast would be awesome.

Count me in with the people disappointed in the lack of MK8D unlockables. Honestly put a bit of a damper on my enthusiasm.

Some sort of a code input or toggle is the obvious, harmless solution that Sakurai will ignore, of course. Just like a hazard toggle.

Give people a cheatcode. Those who want the characters day one can have them and the folks who like unlocking them will keep doing their thing. Everyone is happy.

There's no gratification for a new character when you have seen them already.

I lost my original save on the 3DS and going through all the unlocks again is a fucking chore.

Maybe do a hybrid approach.

All unlocked for online and local MP modes (the main ones anyway).

But have to unlock them to use them in the single player modes.

That give us single player primarily/only gamers the progression we like, while letting the MP only/mostly crowd just dive right in.

There should just be some sort of cheat to unlock characters directly. That way only enthusiasts looking for that sort of thing online will even know about it and everyone else will still be able to unlock them.

I feel like thats how it should be for most fighting games. Competitive players/tournament hosts don't get annoyed with unlock conditions and casual players and other enthusiast who chose to do it themselves will still get motivation out of character unlocks.

Personally I think it'd be boring to have it all unlocked from the start. Smash 4 disappointed me with how fast you could unlock them all.

People who are suggesting to charge a fee to unlock is really interesting because years ago this would have caused an outrage. How far we've come.

I think what they should do is have part of the roster unlocked from the jump, duh. Other characters are available to unlock immediately via an in game currency you get for playing, maybe you see them on the character select screen or just silouhettes. Then a handful of secret characters. That to me is ideal cause I don't want to have to play a bunch of matches to get my Falcon Punch on.

I think it's a bit ridiculous that you have to go through basically N64 era unlock requirements to get access to characters in a game released in an increasingly online multiplayer focused scene.

There are people that don't play Smash for the online.

What about people who like to practice against the CPU?

If it's a Wii U port then yeah, characters (and stages for that matter) should be unlocked from the start.

If it's a new game then no, keep the usual unlocking scheme for it.

No damn it. Unlocking is part of the game, it gets you to try stuff you may not otherwise try. It creates a sort of guide as to objectives you should be doing. Unlocks are great.

Eh... I don't mind unlocking the characters usually.

Now if the Switch is just getting a Smash 4 port, then they should probably just be unlocked from the start.

I'm sort of surprised by the amount of comments basically saying "Yes/no because thats my way of playing" without thinking of the people on the other side who have their reasons as well.

There are possible compromises, you know.

I like having unlockable characters personally, but I get why some people would rather just have them all available from the start. I guess it would be ok if they added it as an option, but I'd be kind of disappointed if there were no unlockable fighters in the next Smash.

A literal cheat code should be able to be used at the start to at least temporarily unlock 'competitive mode' with everything unlocked in it.

I think any fighting game should have all characters unlocked these days. This is no longer a time where most people weren't looking at the internet for secret characters.

As someone who's helped run a few tournies and gone to a friend's house who didn't have my main unlocked, I would deeply appreciate some kind of shortcut to unlock them (code or whatever)

I rather like the suggestion of having everyone in the MP modes but to play them in single player stuff (and online) you have to unlock them, that way someone's progress (or lack of it) doesn't hurt their friends popping by or taking the setup to a tournie :3

I had fun unlocking the characters in melee and the original. I can't even remember how it was in the last game overall because the grinding for the custom moves ruined any fun I had unlocking anything.

I know I'm probably in the minority about this, but I love unlocking stuff in Smash (even if the surprise factor has been ruined). It gives me a reason to play the game and have something to work towards.

(That said, I absolutely agree in the case for customs. If they want more people using them, then those should be unlocked from the start.)

Give an option to pay an additional fee to unlock all characters from the start. Long time fans get the joy of unlocking and whales get monetized. Win-win.

HELL YES!!!!

Unlocking characters screws over competitive & casual players alike and only wastes time that you could be spending learning your main. Unlockables can be done through other means, but all characters & stages should be available from the start.

There's a reason why Capcom, ASW, (mostly) NRS, & even Bandai Namco (for Tekken) did away with unlockable characters. Get with the times, Smash.
