I just want 4 hours of Chiko just destroying any game they make her play. That's my live content.

Last year really was a failure, they announced games in press releases while the show was on and never showed them in the direct, they teased off more annoucements while treehouse was on.

Really half assed with planning

There was no Direct last year. It was only Treehouse.

they are usuall bad at doing things live..and they will probably not have as much material to show as they hoped..so better make things as compact and "direct" as possible.

also a big part of an e3 conference is PR bullshit and sales..so if a direct means we skip those and get to the meat i'm ok with it

Live conference is not a pre-recorded presentation. What kind of logic is that?

They both go through scripted events while one has a crowd present.

It's like the equivalent of watching a play from Shakespeare or watching a movie from Shakespeare.

They're not really that different when they're both presenting the same subject.

What? It's not any harder to find or put aside time for the E3 direct than it is for a regular press conference. They're almost exactly the same in terms of seeking them out or what's required of you to watch them. If anything E3 directs are typically shorter than press conferences which makes it easier to put aside time for them.

Educate them!!!!!

They're presented it in a similar way as a Nintendo Direct, but Sony doing it in their own way and adapting the format to live conference. All scripted, no flubs or mistakes, no long speeches or sales talk. Just game, after game, after game, with few pauses in between. It was very un-Sony-like in comparison to all their past conferences.

Their E3 directs have been better than nearly all their live conferences. More bang for your buck.

I'm not sure I'd say that.

Their first E3 direct initially sucked as it had major streaming issues pretty much everywhere so was a real let down when watching live..

..their second was very good (with the Reggie vs Iwata fight, Robot Chicken skits and a bunch of new games)

..their third sucked after the initial puppet skit..due to Starfox being visually very underwhelming and most of the only new announcements being things like Federation Force and Animal Crossing Amiibo festival.

..the quality of the stream wasn't great last year for the new Zelda trailer either and made it look underwhelming initially. It wasn't really until Treehouse live got going that it started to shine.

They've messed up their digital events just as much as they have conferences. I'd say 2014 was the only year they pretty much nailed it...thanks to a strong digital event and the amazing first Treehouse Live where they showed a bunch of new stuff.

So the conference was nothing like Directs, which are awkward, sterile and horribly paced. For it to be like a Direct there'd need to be insufferabe 5-10 minute interviews with unspectacular guests like the Syklanders CEO or the cutter of Yoshi's Yarn that feel like watching the homeshopping channel.

That was one direct. The direct format isn't like that and you know it

No, it's the other way round. There was exactly one Nintendo E3 since the downgrade that wasn't terrible like this (2014) and that one gained nothing from not having an audience hall.

I'm okay with this. Hope they got tons of new games in development to show, but prolly gonna be disappointed anyways. I'm fine with some new Mario Odyssey footage though!

The "fan competition, digital event, Treehouse live" combination has been shown to be effective and well received with fans. I know I vastly prefer it to the live press conferences and wish Sony and Microsoft would catch up and do pre-recorded conferences as well.

Do you think a live conference would have salvaged e3 2015 for nintendo?

Do people like live pressers? They're insanely awful most of the time. Not everyone is Steve Jobs.

I prefer Nintendo's approach. They're edited well and get to the point.

No. 2015 is the outlier. Most Nintendo directs are usually pretty snappy with an introduction, trailer, talking a bit about the game, then doing a short list of trailers in succession, some dates, trailer, talking about about that game, dates, passing it on to another guy in the video, same formula, then passing it back, same formula, then end or possible final surprise. Very much the same as the recent Sony conference.

If they do gags, they're usually placed at the very beginning and the very end.

Though the new format they did awhile ago is literally a game a minute. Game, info, date, game, info, date, game, info, date, game, info, date in rapid fire succession.

But if Nintendo doesn't have a live conference I won't be able to have my "live" gameplay exhibition where the cameraman spends half the time zoomed in on anything but the actual game!

What we currently know about Nintendo's plans for E3 2017

  • Nintendo will not be hosting a large-scale press conference for institutional investors, analysts and the media.
  • Nintendo of America will present further information on E3 2017 plans at a later date (after April 28). They announced their plans for E3 2016 on May 5, 2016: http://www.nintendo.com/whatsnew/de...i-u-will-be-playable-for-the-first-time-at-E3
    Nintendo's E3 site, e3.nintendo.com, was also updated on May 5 to reflect E3 2016.
  • Reggie Fils-Aime had this to say speaking with Fox News:

E3 is always a big time for Nintendo. We look at each E3 as a unique opportunity to tell our story. And we’re gonna have a big E3 this year. We’re going to be showcasing a variety of games. We will have experiences for… consumers will be able to attend the show for the very first time. So I’m not gonna tell you all of the various games and all of our little secrets for E3, but I can tell you that E3 is going to be a major opportunity for us to showcase not only Nintendo Switch, but also content coming to Nintendo 3DS.
  • Super Mario Odyssey will be at E3 2017
  • They have booked three booths (4822, 5244, 5644) in West Hall:

  • They have booked the Theatre (Room 411) in LACC. 299 fixed seating.

  • E3 2017 will feature a Splatoon 2 pre-release, exhibition tournament.

I don't want to give them clicks so I won't link it, but Destructoid just released an article saying Nintendo is not attending E3 because of this news.

I just don't understand why people are attached to live press conferences. I really hope for the day when everyone else finally follows Nintendo's lead here and kills those cringey monotonous conferences for a trailer reel with some skits or conversation in between.

Good. Im tired of these self-congratulatory, drawn-out, mediocre spectacles these press-events has become (were they ever any good..?) Its ridiculous, to be honest.

I quite liked how they handled it last year (and the year before..?)
Hope for something similar this year.

I've always thought having a live conference where they basically just show a Direct on the screen is the best of both worlds, since you get the scripted and non-awkward Direct but still get the applause and spectacle of a live conference.

Then again, that requires renting out a theater for basically no reason which probably doesn't make sense. Eh either way I'm sure it'll be great.

The only truly awful E3 direct (or direct in general) was the 2015 one indeed. Having some seamstress lady talk about making Yarn Yoshis for what felt like hours just felt kind of sad.

They both go through scripted events while one has a crowd present.

It's like the equivalent of watching a play from Shakespeare or watching a movie from Shakespeare.

They're not really that different when they're both presenting the same subject.

Except a movie can be much more agile since it can cut the parts of people moving backstage so the scene can transition and it does not have stupic pauses for when the crowd goes wild and start clapping when a famous person is on the stage.

Also the time it took kojima to enter the stage last e3, nintendo announced 3 games on the "headlines" style on the last direct

Not at all..merely pointing out that the suckage to quality ratio of their digital events is not really any different to their live conferences.

..but I'd also say that the one highlight of E3 2015 for Nintendo was their live Nintendo World Championships.

Be it live or recorded..Nintendo's biggest issues at E3 are usually presentation quality and holding back software announcements for later dates that should have been announced then and there.

I vastly prefer a live event and the spectacle that comes along with it. Warts and all, love the big unveils that either hit or miss in front of an audience. For instance, i've never been a big God of War fan, but that intro last year got me hyped. I can't imagine a pretaped Direct segment having a similar impact.

I'm still excited to see what Nintendo does, but making E3 a Direct probably makes their event the one i'm least looking forward to at this time.

I miss the big E3 presentations from Nintendo but the Nintendo Directs are great. Nintendo is going to have a large portion of E3 floor space, so I'm still excited.
