Nintendo confirms no live E3 presentation this year

Good. Directs are normally straight to the point, no bullshit. Live presentations are kinda pointless now anyway when the best person at Nintendo for doing them has passed away (RIP).

They had a perfect format with this last Direct.

I don't know if they plan on keeping that format for the Digital Event, but it should be similar to it.

It should have a larger emphasis on Switch games and bigger games. Also a bigger emphasis on third party games like Skyrim and Mario + Rabbids or other Japanese third party games.

Man, I get the appeal of directs and it works for certain companies/events, but saying this should be the standard format and all companies should eliminate conferences is pretty damn lame.

Yeah, that's why I'm looking forward to it. Still a shame that Iwata is no longer with us, I enjoyed his live presentations. The guy knew how to present well.

What do we think the line will be like at E3 to get into the Nintendo booth this year? I can't decide if I want to spend a day on the show floor or not

I like the directs but it would have been fun to see them there at E3 going full force with whatever craziness they can think of.

I wonder if its because they have nothing really new to show at the moment that hasn't been announced yet? I'm sure there are more games coming in full force but probably gonna have to wait till later this year or next year for them to have any footage of any gameplay.

I guess it plays to Nintendo's advantage for the time being but then again being at E3 might help keep the hype going (which it probably doesn't need at this point since systems are still selling out in hours)

Sony already moved to the format though. I imagine many more to follow in the coming years.

I even talked about it on previous pages.

They're presented it in a similar way as a Nintendo Direct, but Sony doing it in their own way and adapting the format to live conference. All scripted, no flubs or mistakes, no long speeches or sales talk. Just game, after game, after game, with few pauses in between. It was very un-Sony-like in comparison to all their past conferences.

No. 2015 is the outlier. Most Nintendo directs are usually pretty snappy with an introduction, trailer, talking a bit about the game, then doing a short list of trailers in succession, some dates, trailer, talking about about that game, dates, passing it on to another guy in the video, same formula, then passing it back, same formula, then end or possible final surprise. Very much the same as the recent Sony conference.

If they do gags, they're usually placed at the very beginning and the very end.

Though the new format they did awhile ago is literally a game a minute. Game, info, date, game, info, date, game, info, date, game, info, date in rapid fire succession.

I'm also beginning to really dislike the Twilight Princess reveal video because it keeps getting posted all the time decades later like people are trapped in time ignoring the past decade of borefests and the most awkward moments imaginable.

They have momentum right now, they should be hyping the shit out of Switch with a live blowout conference to keep people talking and focused. Directs are fine during the rest of the year at talking to their base but E3 is all about hype and anticipation. It's about showing confidence and excitement about your platform.

all of that can and likely will be accomplished with their current plans

E3 is only watched by enthusiasts like us. The rest of the world will get their info from the internet and other places. A live presser means very little in the grand scheme of things. Digital event or live presser, it will be reported on a site by journalists who watched or attended E3.

"was this trailer that I'm watching at a later date on youtube after seeing a headline and link on twitter aired in front of a live audience? that'll really inform how I feel about this game, without that information I really can't say"

It's good thing this isn't the 90's and it's the 2010s+ where digital and online social media is huge. Come on stop with the past mentality already.

Nintendo didn't even have a digital event last year and they only showed a trailer for BotW and it stole the show. Anything and everything can be hyped through videos.

By now you guys should realize all gaf really cares about is the pomp and circumstance of live conference. Want to feel like everyone is watching the same show live and awaiting that fuck up or that moment of epicness and hear people clapping and dancing

..and the internet covers the E3 direct the same as the live presentations.

it really does feel like the game announcements are the last thing on some people's minds for E3

it's weird

Be more worried if Nintendo has bombs to drop than some silly reactions. You'd only get those reactions anyways from some big announcements so it's a bit pointless.

No More Heroes 3 being in production was revealed at the Switch event. Does anyone think a trailer might be ready by E3? I kinda hope there is one.

Not as weird as Nintendo fans shitting on live pressers because Nintendo decided not to do them anymore.

Just because you and Nintendo don't like them now, doesn't make them irrelevant. And plenty of gamers still prefer live pressers. People pack movie theaters to watch Sony's E3 presser.

Nah, it was like 3 months ago, and dude is still probably just starting to do the design document. Next year, we'll get a 20 second teaser.

Companies can find their own ways like Sony did last year with their live presser. The structure of those live pressers have become irrelevant, hence Sony's changes last E3 which was more aimed at the people at home rather than the industry people attending.

I didn't say that. I don't care how any of the companies present, I just want announcement and release dates.

They've kinda been doing that since 2013 when they revealed the PS4. And it's not irrelevant.

The best we could hope for is a teaser with some target visuals, like the original Project Heroes trailer for NMH1. The game sounds like it only recently got started on, so I doubt they have much to share that's more tangible than that.

It was unlike any of Sony's previous conferences. There was no sales talk or long speeches, it was presented similarly to a Nintendo Direct with its pacing and being more directed to you, and not the industry people at attendance.

people have opinions, live pressers are absolutely grating to me. the sole exception was sony's 2016 presser and that's because it was basically a live Direct with none of the typical trappings of a standard E3 presser. just game, game, game, game. opinions are fine, prefer what you prefer I ain't gonna judge you. people spewing nonsense about Nintendo skipping E3 or not being covered by the media or not being confident in their line up is just dumb and deserves to be called out as such.

I actually think they've been doing directs better than their conferences, so if we get a mega direct again I'd be fine with that!

Not surprising thought they better bring the games to the switch. They need to bring it with some huge announcements. I'm not convinced they will at this time.

It really is kinda sad that the Internet has to make a big deal about this one way or the other. The end result is ultimately the same, and people are just hung up on Directs because they can't accept change.

I prefer the Directs and Treehouse, anyway. They're much less sloppy than live presentations, and they just have that Nintendo charm to them that I enjoy.

good thing Nintendo's announcements will make the rounds on social media just like anything else

Having an orchestra and a real audience and Kojima strutting onto the the stage like a boss is the kind of thing that goes beyond social media and gaming websites. Why do you think Apple and Samsung have their own lavish events to introduce their next phone, when they could easily just do it with a press release?

This year we will welcome FFVIIR and Shenmue 3 back for their third E3. Remake will certainly and Shenmue will likely be back for a fourth one next year.

2015, Year of Dreams Deferred.
Unless I've had a serious lapse of memory, if Shenmue III appears at E3 this year it will only be its second, and technically only its first as an actual video game.

Although tbh, it seems you're just shitposting anyway.

Are you referring to the literal last Direct and not specifically E3 ones? If so, I'd say they should remove the whole headline thing they did when transitioning from one game/announcement to the next. It kind of took away that surprise factor when you could so easily catch sight of a game image/name from the headline titles. I'd much rather have that "take a look at this" build-up and THEN know what it is.

I still think the Direct concept is really good, providing of course the content is there to justify the structure and isn't just full of fluff and filler.

A lot of the important headlines were obscured or had a gag in it, like the one for the Smash and Zelda amiibos being "Can you figure this headline?"

I just don't see why Sony is praised for its "here's a game that hasn't even been started yet and will probably not come out until 2020 or so" (FFVII Remake, Death Stranding) conferences. They don't do what E3 is supposed to do: provide information on what new hardware and software is coming in the upcoming year. That's what I watch E3 for, and the Sony shows especially are overblown theatrical spectacles that focus on titles YEARS from completion.

I'd argue Microsoft are more guilty (least now) for being more style-over-substance and more susceptible to the "WOW...it's fucking nothing!" reaction from neutrals or fans alike. I think Sony conferences have gotten slightly better but I guess the counter-argument is that a lot of what made last year's E3 showing could be put down to 3rd parties - notably Resi 7's reveal and subsequent release date.

But like you said, if you're coming to E3 expecting a concise and strict focus on information and facts pertaining to upcoming [within the next 12 months] software/hardware, you're in the wrong place. E3 is more or less a meme-generating spectacle now that's losing more and more of its commercial/industry appeal. And no amount of members of the public filling up the venue will fix that.

That's hardware and they did do that for switch. This is software. You don't see them doing those sorts of conferences for anything else.

I do enjoy live conferences and probably prefer them, but your examples don't make that much sense.

Good.

The wonky press conference shit needs to go. Over hyped badly delivered bullshit. Really prefer just watching people sit down and play games. Even when the games don't seem so great or its not one you are interested in, its a real look at a game.

No need to gather everybody together to watch BS trailers and PR wankfest speeches.

Like 80% of why I like this is to see people fall into sobbing messes in post form.

FFMmr.gif

People want Celebrity #3 going on stage to talk about nothing, or the devs reading awkwardly from some teleprompter and wasting everyone's time between every single game being shown. I understand that having a crowd cheering is kinda cool, but with that also comes those annoying ones that spend the entire fucking conference screaming for god knows what.

Yea, I prefer to sit and watch a 40 or something minutes direct than a live conference. For everyone that goes to E3, Nintendo still has a presence there, the games will be there, there will probably be a treehouse stream for everyone that wants to see more of the games, etc.

I, maybe selfishly, hope that they don't go back.

It's not like many of us aren't watching it live together, anyway. It's not like y'all won't watch it if it's prerecorded!

I like the format for its conciseness and the creativity it allows, so it's fine with me.
