The way Rockstar does in-game sprinting has got to change for RDR2.

I generally enjoy Rockstar games. I love Red Dead Redemption, and I think GTA V is a borderline masterpiece. But I will never, ever understand why Rockstar insists on using the same sprint controls for every game they've released since the PS2 era.

For the unacquainted, Rockstar games have you mash the X (or A) button repeatedly to sprint. When you stop pressing the button, your character stops sprinting. Sounds simple right? But in execution it feels mechanical, tiresome, and unnecessary. I realize this sounds like a nitpick, and it is to an extent. But I do think it's a QoL improvement that Rockstar games could benefit from.

Pressing a button repeatedly in a video game is meant to symbolize an action that takes effort. For example, in quick-time heavy games like Heavy Rain or The Walking Dead, you'll be prompted to press a button repeatedly in order to overcome your opponent in a fight scene, or pull something heavy, or lift yourself over a ledge. But almost never are these long, drawn out scenarios. Usually you're pressing a button rapidly for a short amount of time, enough to simulate your character straining themselves, before the game moves you on to another quick time event or scenario.

But the issue I have with GTA and Red Dead and the like is that sprinting is an action you have to do a LOT of. And as a result, the action of mashing a button repeatedly is baked into the game at a fundamental, near-constant level. Doing that repetitive motion for something so mundane is monotonous, and while I get the intended purpose of it, nearly every game out right now has a far better way of making your character sprint.

What are your thoughts about the typical Rockstar sprint controls? Are you totally fine with them or do they bother you? For me, they're intrusive enough that I find myself thinking about the tedium of the button mashing every now and then instead of the world the game is presenting me with. And IMO, if a game's controls fail to blend into the background at some point during the game, the game might need better controls.

The way Rockstar does aiming and shooting compared to Uncharted or The Last of Us needs to change. The way Rockstar does horrible character movement compared to Uncharted or The Last of Us needs to change. Basically, a Rockstar world with Uncharted or The Last of Us shooting mechanics and animation would be a GOAT game that I would love to play.

I hate mash A/X to sprint. Hate it.

Have the analogue stick handle walking to jogging and then you hold a button to sprint instead of mashing the fucker.

Zelda stamina wheel needs to be the model going forward.

I like how you think Zelda invented a stamina wheel...something that many games have had for decades. Besides, you could argue it is an archaic mechanic as well. A lot of games have gone to unlimited sprint and built their games around it. Besides, there would need to be a gameplay reason.

I have never had a problem with tapping A/X to sprint

Really? I liked BoTW, but the stamina/sprint feels pretty unique for that kind of game. I'm definitely not one wanting to see it in other games.

I'd much rather see the intensity and smoothness of MGSV's sprinting in rockstar games.

it's not a nitpick, it's an accessibility issue. I suffer from chronic pain. Mashing buttons at length increases the amount of pain I experience to the point where I cannot enjoy the game. I'm far from the only one. It's a severe condition. :\

Aiming in GTAV is vastly superior to Uncharted, wtf

My hands just go, so I don't usually notice what they're doing in order to control the game. I've never thought at all about mashing lightly to run because it's not tiring and it's not uncomfortable.

The only time I notice controls in games is when it's something like S.T.A.L.K.E.R and medkits default to the M key, which may as well be on the other side of the world from my hand.

So I say I don't mind the mashing to run, and have no strong feelings one way or the other.

I've never had an issue with tapping the button either but obviously a lot of folks do. Didn't GTAV on PS4 offer a control scheme where you used the analogue sticks for Sprint instead of tapping X?

Yes, this is the most obvious issue with GTA games, they're getting slightly better at it, but it's still my biggest gripe. Can't seem to finish V because of this.

Mashing the A or X button is stupid in this day and age. There are far better alternatives.

I really really hope Red Dead has First Person. It made GTAV into an almost completely different game. I will be legit disappointed if it's gone. Sprint worked great in that mode.

I honestly don't find it a huge issue, but it's definitely a "QoL improvement." If you remember how when riding horses, you could just hold the "X" or "A" button to not full sprint, but to maintain speed? I think that could work with RDR2's on foot controls.

Uncharted and TLOU are okay, but GTA V's aiming (any Rockstar aiming after Max Payne 3) is in the upper echelon of third person shooter single player controls.

God no. Sprint, meter empty, refills a little, sprint, meter empty, repeat. Infinite sprint or just move faster in general, the stamina bar is godawful.

Agreed. You should use the whistle sprint glitch in BoTW.

What game did I play recently that refilled your stamina meter if you released the button just before it ran out?

Somebody help me out here. I thought it was a pretty neat mechanic and for the life of me I can't remember what game it was.

I think that's FFXV you might be thinking of! Great feature.

That's a mechanic specific to Zelda. Stamina draining from running is not it.

What is it with people trying so hard to make old mechanics seem new?

You're right! I couldn't remember because I only played about three hours of it back when it came out. Still waiting for them to fix the frame pacing, lol.

Are you talking to me? Does BotW do that? I haven't played it yet.

I'd be in the dick
Definitely agree. Rockstar can do a lot to improve their controls but this is the biggest issue and would make a huge jump in playability.

Why ask a question with the answer already in the quote?

One of the reasons I can't fathom how GTA games have become regarded as the best games ever made is how clunky they are to control. The tapping to sprint definitely needed to go a long time ago.

Yes.

You seem really determined to "get me" on something and now I don't even know what we're talking about.

I am trying to say what is it with people thinking BoTW invented everything open world and it's wrong and FFXV having sta refresh on sprint/run is another proof of it.

Ive been playing GTA since the third one and just this year i realized you could run faster ny tapping repeatedly 😅, felt pretty dumb.

But i dont mind it, i think is kinda fun actually maybe because i havent been doing it for like15 years.
