Try Planetside 2 if you want to try something new (MMO FPS)

So Planetside 2 is a F2P FPS MMO.

The main attraction is huge armies clashing with each other, trying to take territory. This game is NOT about your K/D, or Team deathmatch, or going lone wolf taking down an entire base by yourself. Such things are very very difficult to do, if not impossible.

You can fight by foot, in armor, or in aircraft. Anyways, it's F2P, and I don't find the F2P mechanics that bad. Every soldier on the battlefield is worthwhile, even the ones with no gear. Didn't want to put F2P in the title because I know some people get instantly turned off.

The game is out for PC (lone client or Steam), and PS4. I can not comment on the PS4 version at all. I included a video if you want a general sense on how the game plays. Anyways, try it out if you are looking for something new. The game is quite old, so I don't think you need a beast machine to run it. I have about 500 hours clocked in.

I remember this being really fun when it came out but I hear the playerbase is greatly diminished which sucks since the big draw was the big constant war going on

Honestly, if you're worried about playerbase and whether you can find battles, don't.

In the morning and early afternoon, I'll admit, it can be pretty dead. But afternoon/evening, there is PLENTY of fights to be had.

yeah, try something new like this game that came out 5 years ago ;p

Hah. New as in a FPS MMO. Not sure how many there have ever been.

I'll download it once Gears 4 is done.

I tried playing this once on PC and once when it came out for PS4. The lack of a proper tutorial was a huge turn off for me. I was incredibly lost. I couldn't find anyone to batlle with and the map was huge. I was just walking aimlessly for hours. Then I found one guy who killed me in seconds. Never played it again.

This is a game that you NEED to join a community. Find a large outfit and spawn on them to play.

Otherwise, you won't have any fun solo.

I really enjoyed my time with this on the PS4. But there came a point where I feel like the player base took a hit and it was either very onesided or very little players.

I played the first one quite a bit and would put it in my top 20 games.

I honestly couldn't tell you why but the second one never grabbed me.

I really liked the concept but the execution didn't do much for me. The shooting mechanics weren't all that great and the battles, despite being large numerically speaking, felt pretty hollow and a bit boring if I'm being honest.

Plus the F2P stuff felt pretty bad - I was constantly being bombarded with advertisements for weapons and gear.

I don't know, I just had a wildly different experience with it.

Game went to shit after 2014, they just didn't have a clue what they wanted to do with it besides nickel and dimming all the players as much as possible. The idea behind the game is solid and with a fair amount of changes to the formula it would be amazing but they just didn't progress in the right direction.

It's a pretty damn good example of great concept but bad execution.

I didn't think PS2 was still going these days

I had some fun with the game when it came out, never got too into it, PC wasn't up to the task of running it very well.

When it got good it got REALLY good, the large-scale fights felt pretty cool, not something any other game has touched.

The gameplay itself sadly never satisfied me.

Shooting felt not good
Progression was weird
You couldn't really try out much stuff without paying.

The large fights barely happened (for me)

Sums up my first experience with this game pretty well.

Used to play when it first came out, up until about the time Hossin came out. You'll get the most out of it by joining an outfit, there's nothing really quite like it out there (Except maybe ArmA).

I played it recently and it seems they've tacked on a load of systems. Looks pretty complicated, the progression system definitely needs to be streamlined and it's very difficult to get anything without having to pay.

The massive battles are still there though (even if the playbase has diminished) and I imagine getting on discord and doing coordinated strikes with an Outfit would still be a fantastic experience.

So Planetside 2 is a F2P FPS MMO.

Great video that demonstrates a typical session highlight (if you're just slogging it along with a bunch of randoms). The battles, when they get going, really are something else.

No thanks. Logging in at prime time only to see a mere handful of people thinly spread across too-many continents just doesn't do it for me in 2017.

The game had promise, but the players didn't stick around, and this particular game suffers when there are low population counts.

I did, gunplay wasn't very good and the game didn't do a good job of introducing the mechanics at all, plus on ps4 it seemed like the community was disorganized (partially because it took so long to come out). Tried it on PC and couldn't run it well enough.

Is there much of a population left on PC?

Absolutely. On primetime, yes.

If you try and play at 12pm on a weekday, you won't find much.

I hopped on right now, and there is currently 2 100+ player battles going on, about 3 midsize 50+ player battles, and a bunch of smaller skirmishes.

Tried it. The grind is real and trying to kill someone is "aim for the head or die trying". Only "affordable" gun (if you're f2p) that i managed to play decent with is the second(?) sniper that uses mid range scopes

Battles look cool but the iron sights seem mega op. You can hit guys like a mile away in the video with iron sights alone

It's time for a Planetside 3.
As someone with 2,000 hours in this game, yes. It needs to die. The game isn't getting the support it needs and is limping along as pop dwindles slowly. Most new players just get stomped by the veterans who still stick around and they sign off and never play again. Highly doubtful DBG will invest in making another game like this though.

Planetside 2 is fun.

Planetside 2 is also the literal definition of pay-to-win.

I have to disagree, at least to a great extent.

Most of the starting equipment is more than capable of getting the job done, and the most important powers/abilities like revive speed, shield cooldown, etc. are locked behind Certs, which must be earned through playing the game and can't be bought outright.

Now I will say this: There's a serious grind if you want to unlock most new weapons without paying, and some of them are damned-near required to excel in specific scenarios. By default each faction's MBT (main battle tank) comes equipped with HEAT shells, for example, which aren't the best at combating other vehicles or infantry. They're a jack of all trades and a master of none. What this means is that if you come up against an enemy MBT equipped with AP shells, you're going to be at a disadvantage if he's at least equally skilled. You also won't be as effective versus infantry as a tank with HE shells. You can, however, absolutely still be successful if you play intelligently. Additionally, you'll still have some advantages over AP and HE tanks. Your shells will have more splash damage than APs (which have virtually none), and they'll also damage vehicles far more than HEs (which hit like wimps).

I think the above example applies to infantry and aircraft as well. There are few scenarios in which a particular weapon is outright worse than another in every single scenario. As a result, I don't think it's accurate to call the game "Pay to Win." Unless you want to endure a grind, though, I would call it "Pay to Adapt," else you'll be forced to use a single loadout geared towards one playstyle. You won't be able to run-and-gun as an Infiltrator with an SMG, for example, or rain down rockets with an ESF (Reaver/Scythe/Mosquito), or turn your Lightning into a dedicated anti-air vehicle via the Skyguard turret. These things require either a lot of time and patience, or some cash. If that bothers you, I can totally understand it. But again, the game is not necessarily "Pay to Win" because you don't pay to win outright, you just pay to excel in different situations.

...happened to me too, and I didn't want to invest more time I guess.

Sorry for the old thread bump.

But I downloaded this game and gave it a try on someone's recommendation.

My initial impressions were not very good, but after a few days of trying it, I find it extremely rewarding and interesting. The biggest problem I found in the beginning was, what do I do? It was sort of overwhelming. I was just walking everywhere with no clue how to get into a battle, and when I did the on foot action seems sorta average.

Vehicles is where it's at for me. I found the scale of the battles massive. I decided to start riding around in a tank with someone as a gunner in a platoon that knew what they were doing, soon we started fighting other platoons, huge tank battles, and aircraft. It went from underwhelming to pretty much the most unique shooter I've played this generation, and apparently, it's pretty old.

I've never played anything like this. It did crash on me a few times, but for some reason, I keep going back. I recommend giving it a few hours and use the map for redeployment to more active zones.

This game was mind blowing when it came out, to come over a ridge in a tank and look down on a massive battle going on over a base was just something else. Mobilizing troops in the galaxy transports, with mosquitos and other transports flying escort. Bombarding defending forces from a distance with tanks. Building to building infantry battles. I remember finding it very difficult to hit anything as infantry, and the mechanics of the game overall were fairly complex and took some time to learn. Great game though, ahead of its time if you ask me.

My favorite memory from this game is when my brother flew a transport to the side of a mountain with me and a full squad. Ah the rage in the chat....good times.
