Didn't know where to post this so here will do, not having played any DQ, why are III and V overwhelmingly popular in Japan [in this form of poll]?

You could post it on the community thread, it could use some more movement. :p

They're the most popular because they deserve it and Japan has good taste.
III was when the franchise really exploded in Japan so it's no surprise it's fondly remembered over there, and V is largely agreed to have the best narrative in the series.

This didn't belong in the thread it was posted in, and I thought it was kinda interesting, so here we are in a new thread.

In particular, I like how they have stickers for age group. There's a lot more white stickers on the earlier games than I'd expect. It must be due to the mobile releases.

No lies detected, V is awesome and III was pretty great too.

I wish white stickers weren't white, they're really hard to see.

3 is also full of olds, which is to be expected.

surprised on the low numbers on 9. it actually had a streetpass kind of thing going for it back on the ds. Frankly I liked them all. Wish 10 would have gotten a release here.

I knew Dragon Quest III and V would 've the most popular, just based on the sheer quantity of doujins.
I also knew VII and IX would be less popular (than those, IV, and VIII), based on this metric.

IV, V and X are the only ones I haven't played yet. It's interesting that the general opinion is that V is one of the best games, I played the DS port for ~2 hours or so and dropped it out of boredom when it came out. I will give it a second chance.

I agree that III is simply amazing. My favorite one
... along with VI

Monsters 1 and 2 are my favorite games ever, but III and V are definitely my favorite main titles. Good picks, Japan.

Also, you gotta play DQ, OP. You're seriously missing out on the best game series ever!

3 was revolutionary for its time. It was the first Dragon Quest game where you could design your own party (picking classes, class changing). Once you get the boat it turns into an open world game where you have objectives all around the world that you can complete in any order, with each one having a cool subplot going on behind it. After that there's an interesting twist where
the enemy you thought was the final boss was only an underling of an even more powerful foe, who shows up during what appears to be an endgame celebration. Then you go chasing him down a great big hole and wind up in the game world from the first Dragon Quest game, which makes up the last 25% or so of the game
.

5 is just a really solid JRPG with a charming story that covers decades of in-game time. The game starts with the protagonist as a young child and ends with him married with two children (wife and both children are potential party members). The monster recruitment system was introduced here too and is pretty fun.

I'm the guy who has played a bunch of games in the series, but has never played much of III. I rented it as a kid, but I never got past that first tower (I was bad at RPGs as a child). I really need to fix that.

V is a great game though.

III and V sound about right.

III sort of introduced the Class system to DQ and it's also a pretty good game. Not to mention it vastly improves on its predecessors.
Played the translated SFC version a number of years back, and it was pretty good.

And V...well, it's by and far got the best narrative of any DQ game.
Also, monster collecting! (Among a few other things...)

III holds up extremely well too (the Super Famicom/Mobile version at least)

The NES version holds up ok though it depends on how much you can tolerate its speed. It might also have a higer encounter rate, though that may be just me. It lacks a few classes from the remakes but it's still really solid and I find it easier to go back to than IV NES, probably because I can't stand the latter's AI controlled partners and slower beginning.

I think 4 NES is super easy to go back to, personally. I alternate my replays between the versions and I always enjoy going back to the NES version. Using a code to enable manual control in chapter 5 is an interesting experience, too.
Of course, the NES version of 3 is great too. Both feel quite modern even today.

III would benefit from a remake (especially in the west), I truly believe it's one of the best Dragon Quest games. It's just a bit hard to play on the NES or GBC...

1-3 and 4-6 are considered trilogies, right? How important is it to play them in order?

You should play 1-3 in order. 4-6 it doesn't matter much. There is an interesting connection between 4 and 5 that works better if you do 4 first, but it's not that important.

Wha? A code for manual control? I think I'll look to try this, thanks for the tip!

Only ones I've finished are I and IX and I liked both a ton. But I tried IV and ended up hating it. Seeing the love for V and VIII, I should play them eventually.

I leave the AI on in post 3 games almost 100% of the time. Their ability to change their action to heal if someone drops into critical is more than outweighs them occasionally making a dumb move.

LOL @ IX being popular with little kids. It's the only mainline game I actively dislike (caveat being I haven't played X).

III and IV are my favorites.

It's weird to see someone say they liked one game in the series and "hated" another. It's such a remarkably consistent series, opinions generally don't diverge that much across the games.
9 aside, I guess

I like some a lot more than others. I find the job system in 6-7 real tedious. I think 2 is too cryptic for its own good.
