The Metal Thread |OT2| All Riffs, No Gifs

So what is the best metal so far this year?

I'm torn between Mastodon, Power Trip and Darkest Hour.
Top 5 for me so far:
Ayreon, warbringer, kreator, pain of salvation and Pain of Salvation.

Here's the official video link. Geez, I used to be HUGE Iced Earth fan back in my teen years, but I really just can't stand their newer (post-Horror Show) stuff. The lyrics are just as childish as ever, but I've grown out of them. I actually cringed at Dystopia's references to other pop-culture properties.
Same for me. It feels like they're a cover band who reallllly wants to write the same songs as 'Wicked-era' I.E. . I'd rather the band break up as the side projects are better served for creating something quality at this point. Demons and Wizards for John while Stu goes back to Into Eternity. John is wasting Stu at this point.

Ok, I take back my bitching about the raving for the new Ayreon album :p

I listened a bit over two more times yesterday and I'm digging it. It'll still be hard as hell for it to land in my top 10 this year, but it's good stuff. Definitely the best since THE.
Yup, I don't know why but it didn't click at first, but for sure it has now. The singles are easily the weak points though.

Demoncy (GA) - Faustian Dawn (Nuclear War Now! 2016)
Demoncy (GA) - Within the Sylvan Realms of Frost (Nuclear War Now! 2017)
Bestial Raids (POL) - Prime Evil Damnation (Nuclear War Now! 2014)
Bestial Raids (POL) - Master Satan's Witchery (Nuclear War Now! 2016)
Torgeist (FRA) - Devoted to Satan (Drakkar 2008)
Torgeist (FRA) - Time of Sabbath (Drakkar 2008)

Demoncy, mandatory Beherit-inspired USBM. Bestial Raids, one of the strongest bestial black metal bands in the world. Torgeist, a disgusting product of LLN.

For all the prog metal fans in the house, Ragnar Zolberg is gone from Pain of Salvation, which really sucks because his writing definitely made The Passing Light of Day so amazing. There's a lot of shit he outright wrote or had the demo of from earlier in life. It's also pretty obvious Daniel wasn't giving him that credit.

Also I'm fairly certain he used to post on Neogaf, particularly here in the metal thread I remember a post about going on the cruise with them back when he joined.

Pain of Salvation's statement:

After a few years of working together with Ragnar, I feel that we have come to a point where it is necessary to part ways. It feels very sad, because we are losing a great vocalist and stage personality in Ragnar. It felt great writing the new album together with him, and I am very thankful for that time. We all are. But with time it has become clear that his true place is not in this band. Musically, it has worked very well, but there are so many other variables that need to click in order to make a band strong and stable.

We are not going into a period of uncertainty, but one of deliberate change and strength. We have a great record label and a great management/booking company that have both told us that they understand our decision, and that they back us up and support us fully through this. All scheduled shows will happen as planned. How? Well, we are happy to announce that, starting today, Johan Hallgren will be returning to the band as a full member again, and we will go full throttle ahead through this. We are very happy about seeing him back onboard, and we are sure you will accept him back with open arms, as will we.

One thing that we are looking forward to a lot is the regained possibility to meet up and rehearse more often, which is one of the main reasons why I started playing music in the first place: to have that small and devoted tribe, standing in a sweaty rehearsing room, sharing a stupid dream. And then making it come true.

So, a new chapter in the life of Pain of Salvation, and yet not. We hurt, we heal, we rise. And we keep delivering, that is a promise. We hope for your love and support through this. We want to thank Ragnar for the good years together with us, and wish him all the luck with his future endeavours. And again, we warmly welcome Johan Hallgren back to our family!

Peace,
Daniel & Pain of Salvation

What the band members and Johan himself has to say about his return to the band:

Johan Hallgren:
“Already when I quit the band, I felt that I really wanted to come back. This feels fun as hell, and I will go into this with full force – hook, line and sinker. I have promised myself to supersede everyone’s expectations of my return. This is something I know well, and I am damn good at it. And more than that, I have really missed them all – it’s a wonderful gang!”

Daniel D2 Karlsson:
“I am very happy to see Johan back – I actually feel quite exalted. Johan is a wonderful human being with a warm heart, and he’s got a fantastic charisma as a musician. I am convinced our fans will welcome him with a warm embrace.”

Léo Margarit:
“It’s great that Johan is back – a good friend. I am certain the fans will be very happy, he was a beloved band member, and many were sad to see him go. It will be very fun to play with him again!”

Ragnar's statement:
I quit Pain of Salvation in 2013 after having been in the band for 1 year only. It was nothing like what I had expected and I had come to understand why some members before me had also left. At that time Roger stepped in and did the acoustic tour in which he did a very good job!

About one year later I was asked to do one more gig, prognation at sea, I agreed. When I showed up for rehearsals Daniel had been hospitalised and asked me to fill in his shoes for the show, after he got better he asked me to join the band again and write the next album with him. I love to make albums so I decided to stick around a little longer.

Recently, with our album In the Passing Light of Day the band has been doing considerably better. An album which Daniel and I wrote together during a 2 year time period and I also lent some of my previous compositions to it. With a lot of dedication, sacrifices and help from various people we managed to go from almost being dropped from the record label to selling a descent amount of albums and playing to sold out shows. Something that I am very proud of and obviously very grateful for the love shown to us by the kind people attending our shows.

I have had a great time with my friends Gustaf Hielm, Daniel Karlsson and Léo Margarit. I am going to miss hanging out with them as much, they are the biggest reason I managed to stay all this time. <3

As it turned out, everybody worked on the album as a team, but as soon as our album was finished last year, the band leader started acting in a very similar manner as what we have been seeing of the band Ghost recently. It was clear that this was not “our" album anymore, but his. I got payed a small amount of 1000 euros for my work for those 2 years, that did not even cover my travel expenses.

Although PoS have now been doing quite good business wise, being in this band has been bad business from the beginning and has cost way more than what I’ve had in return, both mentally and economically. Minimum wage is not to be expected when you play to sold out shows and full venues at our standards. Neither is pessimism and criticism after almost every gig.

I have spoken my mind about all of this while still doing what I could to keep a professional relation towards everything, after all it is also my music that we have been playing and I have wanted everything to go as smoothly as possible despite the unjust treatment I have faced.

Instead of making amends, offering better salary or even giving credit where it’s due I was instead asked by Daniel to leave the band yesterday.

I am happy for everything I have learned in the recent years and the people I have gotten to know through this adventure and I am also very happy to be moving on. One thing that I have learned and think should be kept in mind is: Never take credit for others peoples work, that’s just not nice and extremely disrespectful.
Thank you!

Decided to listen to a few recommendations on Spotify today to find something new. Came across The Dear Hunter.

Just starting listening to their latest album, but it's pretty great so far. My favorite band is BTBAM and this band is such a perfect complement. Very much on the quirky BTBAM side, but a much lighter take overall. My only wish is that they'd incorporate some sweet jazzy licks, but oh well, can't have it all.

edit: Gloria is such and incredible song. The sheer musicianship in the middle is nuts. Definitely going to have to listen to the whole discography now.

Been really addicted to these two lately:

Tetrafusion is kind of BTBAM without the growling vocals and with a bit more djent influence. Stream here.

This album is kind of post-metal like Pelican or a lighter ISIS but with some interesting sort of Pink Floyd influences there. Stream here.

I can't believe it took Spotify to notify me Pallbearer are touring Australia in July.

I am so fucking excited to get crushed by them I can't describe.

The new Hideous Divinity album is killer. A must listen if you're into Nile, Hour of Penance, or early Fleshgod Apocalypse. Check it out!

Loving Night Demon's punchy bass tone. The vocals and general vibe are making me think of High Spirits.

So, whens a good time to hit up the merch table? Gunna get to the venue early so i can be front row but i want to grab a shirt and maybe a tour poster.

I usually go as soon as I get there, never bothered with a poster but just put the shirt on over the one you have on and you don't have to worry about carrying it.

Who are you seeing?

Recommend me some catchy/groovy recent metal releases. Need to update my gym playlist. I'll listen to anything that isn't metalcore or deathcore.

How much stuff are you taking? Just keep your wits about you like you would anywhere and I'm sure you'll be fine, if you feel uncomfortable just move elsewhere, remember that 99.9% of the people are there for the same reason as you.

We occasionally get gigs targeted by pickpockets but the security are usually pretty decent, I'm off to see Maiden next week and I'll have my phone and wallet and that's it, I'm only taking my wallet because it's paperless and I need my credit card and drivers licence otherwise I'd just take my debit card.

As somebody who discovered post-rock not even a year ago and hasn't been to any concerts in the genre at all there are a metric ton of bands in that list that I'd love to see...

Caught an EODM pick
Mastodon was phenomenal, absolutely perfect. Stayed at the front the whole time, concert had the friendliest people ever. Screamedy head off, shook hands with the basist of Russian Circles. Such a great time.
Every act was on point.
Brent even came out to play with EODM.
Nabbed two shirts, a real and fake
But man, i had such an awesome time, it still feels surreal.

You got the itch, no stopping the train now, unless you can suplex like Sabin

Im already ready to go back and do it all over again.
Edit: my only gripe is that both the venue amd fake shirt seller gave me xl rather than l and theyre both way too big.

Next time just take a second to check the shirt size before you hand over the cash, there's always time no matter how manic it feels.

Glad you had a great time, how many gigs is that for you now?
