Trails in the Sky the 3rd |OT| Time's the Charm

Finished. Game was really enjoyable, I honestly didn't think I would enjoy it this much for what was essentially a huge dungeon crawler with the random unconnected bits of storytelling the doors provided. The main plot itself worked pretty well, with Kevin and Ries both being interesting in their own right. Now its back to waiting for the Crossbell games.

Also, can't get Overdosing Heavenly Bliss out of my head.

A question about Chapter 7:

Is it possible to leave Gehenna, or are you locked into following the main quest? I have a few doors left I haven't done, should I reload an old save or carry on?

You'll get a chance to go back and do some doors after Gehenna. The real point of no return will be obvious when you get to it.

Ending was magnificent, Falcom continues to impress, though that may be a poor choice of words given this game is a decade old.

The farewells at the end were pretty melancholy overall, but Renne's departure was just gut-wrenching, especially Estelle's admonition to her at the end. It's kind of the opposite of FC's sequel hook. Whereas in that game you want to play SC just because of how rage-inducing Joshua's actions were, here you want to continue the story so you can see if Estelle, Joshua can add Renne to their family like they say.

Speaking of sequel hooks, Zero and Ao when?

Died on the last match in Nightmare Arena, any tips? Is the reward worth it for completing it?
I hear something about powering Anelace's weapon I think. Would I need to bring her for this?

I guess final question, but where's the last Sun Door?

The reward for the door itself is kinda a weird Quartz and some Mira.
Soul, which slowly converts EP to CP...it's not great unless I was using it wrong. Only use I could find for it is that it was Earth based so it can replace a Defense quartz if you don't want to take the attack down stats from one of those.

You only get Anelace's upgraded weapon if she partakes in the battle, afaik. It's her best weapon in the game.

I have the worst luck in the fishing minigame. What's the best combo to catch bait fish? Because I get so many rainbow trouts and rock eaters.

Zero and Ao
have a great resolution to Renee story Arc
too. Western gamers deserve to play those games.

Yup.
Unfortunately, it makes it VERY HARD to justify bringing them over when essentially you need to have played Trails in the Sky to get what's going on with her and Estelle/Johsua's story arc.

What I did to beat the minigame:

Always use the second from the top rod until catching a bait fish, I think it's Piscis Heart and eventually Bamboo Rod? And then use River Bug or Dumplings.

When you cast: tap the button rapidly, then slow down steadily until you're tapping every second or so, and keep slowing down by tiny fractions and you'll get an instant hit within 20 seconds. I never missed a single cast doing this.

You'll get a few (5 or so?) bait fish each round, which you can then switch to the top level rod and use, then back down to catch more bait fish. I smoked each fisher this way. I beat the last guy by 1000 points!

I haven't had any problems with the timing, but I was having terrible luck with what I actually caught and the ones that get away. Took me a lot of tries to beat the first one because of that, I was catching almost nothing but bad fish I couldn't use, and then the few times I could use the big rod they would get away. So I was getting 140-180 points and the other guy was catching a single fish worth more than that on the last round.

Second fisher was a little easier, won on the second try since I figured out what bait combinations to use (and more importantly which to avoid). Almost thought I was going to lose because my last two fish got away, and despite a big lead she started catching up quickly.

Just got to the last guy. We'll see how that goes.

Edit: First try, he barely caught anything. That's a little weird, felt like a big reverse difficulty curve. First guy took so many tries.

If you have no qualms about cheating in mini games and you find the timing of fishing hard, use Cheat Engine to reduce the speed. At 0.7x or 0.8x speed it's a piece of cake.

Glorious Forecastle 1F, down a couple of screens from the elevator that leads to 2F.

Thanks. Found the last Sun Door, I'll challenge Nightmare Arena again another day.

Just going to finish up the game first though since I want to get it done by tonight. I finished the last two Star Doors. I love the world building all the Star Doors have done, and that last one was quite something. Quite the tease for future titles.

Was that Epstein foundation graphic already in English in the Japanese version? Seems like it. Most of it is too blurry to read though.

I've missed a single cast out of the dozens with only single clicking.
I think I've read it a couple times in this thread that people have problems with the timing. Which I find kind of interesting considering I personally feel it's really intuitive.

There might be some input lag with controllers that affects it. I found it nearly impossible with my wireless PS4 controller even though my reaction time felt spot on. But using the method I posted above meant I got a hit before the icon even appeared.

Never mind, finished Nightmare Arena. A lot easier since I prepared this time around. I'm ready for the end now.

I'm nearing the end of Chapter 6, but I have yet to return to the arena door for anything past normal. Are the harder levels of the arena required for unlocking all the doors or just achievements/weapons?

Just achievement and weapons. Seems to be this way for all the sun doors.

Finished the game. It's one of the few games that managed to make me feel really emotional. It really makes good use of the build-ups from FC-SC and enhances them. Kudos to Falcom for making an entire solid narrative for this and thank you to XSEED for pushing for its English release. The localization effort is wonderful.

Also, I compiled "Trails in the Chest" (with some minor formatting). I wish we could get a continuation somehow, haha.

Finished the game as well. Trails in the Sky has been quite a ride, but it's finally over. It definitely went out with a bang. I love this game to bits.

For the final dungeon,
reading all those empty treasure chest messages was quite something. Made the entire end even more emotional. So many messages of encouragement and expressing thanks, it was wonderful.

Wow, Schera Moon's door is a huge lore dump.
Question regarding a npc:
I don´t remember the blind journo from previous games. Did he appear in SC or FC?
Because he is suspicious as fuck

He is
also aboard the Lusitania at the very beginning of the game. Apparently he'll show up more in Crossbell, but he is also mentioned in Cold Steel.

I've got the final doors in sight before I engage the final boss. Sun Doors 3-5 and Star Doors 14 and 15.

This fishing game is excruciating. Is there any worthwhile reward for doing it? I've lost 3 times now and it's taken 15 minutes.

The reward is just OK. However I encourage you to check earlier posts in the thread where people posted some tips.

One thing the fishing game changed from SC is that you have to mash during the rod wiggle now. I don't believe that's explained.

Do you? I beat the fishing minigame never doing that. Just pressing the button once at the ! worked fine.

There were a couple of times where the fish escaped after doing that, but it was so infrequent that I think it's just RNG/the game hating you.

Thanks, it took me a few goes to realise I should be mashing at those bits. I'll leave that door I think, even with tips I don't think I have the patience.

From what I could tell on my end it was pretty consistent, at least. Don't mash, fish always escapes, mash, and it's captured. First situation happened to me 3 times before I caught on. Of course I could have been the victim of the world's most incredibly misleading RNG, but I guess it never hurts to mash.

From my experience, mashing is only required in round 3 by big fish. At least round 3 was the first time one fish escaped and after that I tried mashing the next times and it worked out fine going forward.

So, Moon Door 2: We
Crusader Kings 2
now? Because I swear this exact scenario happened for me in a campaign of
Crusader Kings 2
, well, several actually. Just uh, from the opposite point of view.

Also, franchise-wide question: Are the Jaegers top-to-bottom controlled by Uroboros?
Because honestly, trying to get Liberl's economic-elite to hire Jaegers and inevitably get thrown in the Big House for it seems like something Weissman would do for some preliminary destabilization of Liberl.

Not an actual series expert, but I think the ones in FC/SC are just remnants of Jester, the corps that were hired to attack Erebonia to distract Cassius; there's a few other corps named and while they can be hired by or hired with Ouroborous members they don't appear to be directly controlled as a whole.

No. Well, ~no~.

There is no single "Jaeger" group. It's just that they use the word "jaeger" instead of mercenary. Now, it is very much possible that Ouroboros has planted Enforcers or other personnel in all major jaeger corps, like they did with Loewe, but you can't really "own" all the jaegers.

Chapter 5, just got the last characters.
Now, the important decision that is haunting me
Ries, Estelle, Joshua, Renne or
Ries, Estelle, Tita, Renne
I feel both those party setups are going to have some great dialog, but I can't deciiiiiide.
Why do you have to have so many awesome characters but so little party space, game. Whyyyyyy.
