The tea cup getting tapped is what put Chris to sleep earlier. He stuffed his ears with cotton, and pretended to fall asleep the next time it happened. He was supposed to be out when they rolled him in for the surgery, but he used that window to get untied.
The "grandfather" - whoever the actual person was - shot himself because he'd been in the sunken place for who knows how long, and knew he only had that one momentary window of control before he went back. He didn't want to go back. Imagine how well Chris would be doing after say, five years in the sunken place, then gets a tiny window of control over the body. He wanted to end the nightmare.
90% thriller, 10% dark comedy.

Thanks man. Now it makes sense.
I looked the director up hoping to find more movies from him but sadly this seems to be his first. I love movies like this where the tension really builds up, where the twist is cool and you don't exactly see it coming. Any other similar movies? I've seen tons of horror/thrillers but i always want more.

From Adam Wingard i highly recommend these two. both have a similar atmosphere as Get Out.
You're Next
The Guest
Neon Demon from Refn is great too but much slower and artsy.

Oh one more thing on that...
The thing is, if the grandfather had only known that Missy was dead, he wouldn't have needed to kill himself, because he can't sink into that place anymore. Or is it like..whenever a tea cup is tapped like that they will fall asleep again and into that place? Including Chris?
The one and only thing that you could kinda consider a bit...out there is...
The man wanting Chris' eyes, as if such a thing can even truly work like that. Some of these things....the sick stuff the family was concerning themselves with could slightly be called sci-fi. Just not enough to put that in the genre.
It's not the grandfather that killed himself, it was the original person that the grandfather stole the body from. The film never confirms if the original person regaining control after seeing flashing lights only momentarily has control over themselves (plus, the victim of the grandfather's body swap likely had no idea if it was short/long term) so that person committed suicide before the grandfather could regain control of his body. He might have regained consciousness for only a few moments or it could have been longer term...but without knowing for sure he likely didn't want to take any chances.
It is a bit science-fiction, yeah.
I can't remember if I said this when the thread started but this movie just reminds me when I saw this for the first time at the theatre. Some old fuck came in with a MAGA hat. Lol. Old fart
I like your tastes.
Get Out, You're Next, and The Guest are both 10/10 movies for me.
Yeah it's a pretty messed up situation, quite damn dark too. A very very good first effort of that director too. I will definitely out his comedies too but i mostly hope he will do something similar again.
By the way, the cinema also showed a trailer of another promising horror/thriller called It comes at Night. It actually looked quite interesting for sure. I love how we lately get quite a bit of worthwhile horror movies.
LMAO. That's some funny shit.
He knew exactly what he was doing man. Smh.
not exactly the same thing, but when i went to see this there was some guy sat in front of us on his phone for the entire film. like, first of all, who the fuck spends £9 on a movie ticket if you're not gonna give it a chance and browse facebook for 2 hours, and secondly that behaviour would be more understandable if the film was boring/shit... but it was get out. the first act is brilliant. He knew exactly what he was doing man. It's not quite the same as the others here (which are all incredible) but I think Green Room has a similar intensity thing going on.
yeah it is but people still do it anyway. the most annoying thing is if you're sat behind it (which me and my girlfriend were) the glaring screen can be super distracting, and people who are inconsiderate enough to do this kind of thing usually don't bother turning their screen brightness down either. and i'm still kinda shocked that someone could be so bored to mindlessly scroll through their phone in a screening of get out. like maybe during the second act but for the entire thing? the first act especially is tense as fuck. the only reasons i can think of is that the guy had either already seen it (but then why spend money on it again if you're not gonna watch) or got upset at the racial slant. But isn't that kind of stuff forbidden? It sure is at the cinema here. Before the movie itself they always show a clip of how you cannot use your phone unless there's an emergency. But yeah, that kind of behavior is stupid as hell.
Really neat film... but theyleft Logan behind and chris left all kinds of dna at the crime scene lol

I mean we don't know what happens next right? For all we know they go to the cops, and Chris has blood all over him so the cops will believe some shit happened.
Cops investigate, they find surgery equipment, photos of missing blacks, they find Logan and he's acting all weird, etc.
But the movie chose not to show this or other possible "endings" because ultimately it would ruin the pace, etc.
Yes it is. But you're in luck. He's now working on his second film and plans to do four more. Comcast just signed him a about a week ago..upped his budget from $4 mil to $25.

Awesome. And do we know if those movies are going to be in the same genre? You say I'm in luck so I assume they are.

That is an affirmative. Wants to stick to these original stories dealing with social issues. Definitely looking forward to it..
Very much agree. The reasoning for wantingSaw it last night and it was a hell of a fun ride. Reminded me a lot of Hitchcock.
Some slight issues.I'm not sure I really buy the explanation for why they only wanted to use black people as replacement bodies. Because "it was in style?" That wasn't sufficiently explained to achieve credibility for me. The blind guy himself said he didn't care for skin color, he only cared about his eyes. It would only make sense if they all belonged to a cult that worshiped being black or something.

Very much agree. The reasoning for wantingwas very unexplained and seemed like a missed opportunity to take the social commentary further.black bodies
I guess there might be some "everybody want to be black but no one wants to be black" style commentary there but I thought it was too muddied to be successful.
One thing I didn't understand or pick up on,but why were they doing brain surgery on that white guy towards the end of the film?
That surgery was so that they could transplant his brain into Chris' body like they did with the grandpa and grandma and more.
Weird... I thought for some reasonthey were just lobotomizing the auctioned off slaves to make them more perceptible to hypnosis or keep them under control. I wonder why it was that they temporarily reverted back to their former personalities after being flashed by a camera then, or why they remain as a "passenger" inside the body? Are they only transplanting part of the brain? Or were they only performing brain transplants on a few of them?
Also kinda hard to believethat some racist order in the middle of nowhere happened to have mastered successful brain transplants with a surgery team of one, no less
It's about to open in Mexico soon and I think I wanna see this film but I fucking hate horror movies that rely on cheap jumpscares instead of good suspense.
Does this movie have jumpscares? And if it does does it rely on them too much?
The dude basically explained the whole procedure.
I enjoyed it but the twist was very obvious to me
As soon as the maid and gardener were shown I was like "they are making them slaves/mind controlling them and the daughter is up to no good"
