saw this when it came out in the uk. damned solid film, although i think the pacing comes to a complete standstill around the time chris
gets captured and we get an unecessarily long exposition dump through the tv that seems to last forever
. i kinda wish a lot of this information had been communicated a bit more naturally into the story as the building tension in the first act is superb, only for the film to come to a standstill before the finale.

still didn't stop the film from having a pretty heavy impact tho. looking forward to what peele does next.

What kind of film is this?
horror/thriller/comedy

The tea cup getting tapped is what put Chris to sleep earlier. He stuffed his ears with cotton, and pretended to fall asleep the next time it happened. He was supposed to be out when they rolled him in for the surgery, but he used that window to get untied.

The "grandfather" - whoever the actual person was - shot himself because he'd been in the sunken place for who knows how long, and knew he only had that one momentary window of control before he went back. He didn't want to go back. Imagine how well Chris would be doing after say, five years in the sunken place, then gets a tiny window of control over the body. He wanted to end the nightmare.

Thanks man. Now it makes sense.

I looked the director up hoping to find more movies from him but sadly this seems to be his first. I love movies like this where the tension really builds up, where the twist is cool and you don't exactly see it coming. Any other similar movies? I've seen tons of horror/thrillers but i always want more. :)

This director (Jordan Peele) has never done anything like this before. His bread and butter was acting (not directing) in goofy comedy.

His goofy comedy is awesome though. So if you're interested check out Keanu (comedy about Jordan Peele's character losing his cat), and his comedy sketches from Key And Peele and from Mad TV.

From Adam Wingard i highly recommend these two. both have a similar atmosphere as Get Out.

You're Next
The Guest

Neon Demon from Refn is great too but much slower and artsy.

Oh nice!

You're Next is one i've already seen but haven't watched The Guest yet. Not that i recall. Watched Neon Demon too. Enjoyed it but at the end of the day Get Out is more up my alley.

I like your tastes.

Get Out, You're Next, and The Guest are both 10/10 movies for me.

Oh one more thing on that...

The thing is, if the grandfather had only known that Missy was dead, he wouldn't have needed to kill himself, because he can't sink into that place anymore. Or is it like..whenever a tea cup is tapped like that they will fall asleep again and into that place? Including Chris?

The one and only thing that you could kinda consider a bit...out there is...

The man wanting Chris' eyes, as if such a thing can even truly work like that. Some of these things....the sick stuff the family was concerning themselves with could slightly be called sci-fi. Just not enough to put that in the genre.

It's not the grandfather that killed himself, it was the original person that the grandfather stole the body from. The film never confirms if the original person regaining control after seeing flashing lights only momentarily has control over themselves (plus, the victim of the grandfather's body swap likely had no idea if it was short/long term) so that person committed suicide before the grandfather could regain control of his body. He might have regained consciousness for only a few moments or it could have been longer term...but without knowing for sure he likely didn't want to take any chances.

It is a bit science-fiction, yeah.

I can't remember if I said this when the thread started but this movie just reminds me when I saw this for the first time at the theatre. Some old fuck came in with a MAGA hat. Lol. Old fart

Yeah it's a pretty messed up situation, quite damn dark too. A very very good first effort of that director too. I will definitely out his comedies too but i mostly hope he will do something similar again.

By the way, the cinema also showed a trailer of another promising horror/thriller called It comes at Night. It actually looked quite interesting for sure. I love how we lately get quite a bit of worthwhile horror movies.

not exactly the same thing, but when i went to see this there was some guy sat in front of us on his phone for the entire film. like, first of all, who the fuck spends £9 on a movie ticket if you're not gonna give it a chance and browse facebook for 2 hours, and secondly that behaviour would be more understandable if the film was boring/shit... but it was get out. the first act is brilliant.

But isn't that kind of stuff forbidden? It sure is at the cinema here. Before the movie itself they always show a clip of how you cannot use your phone unless there's an emergency. But yeah, that kind of behavior is stupid as hell.

It's not quite the same as the others here (which are all incredible) but I think Green Room has a similar intensity thing going on.

Green Room was great!

yeah it is but people still do it anyway. the most annoying thing is if you're sat behind it (which me and my girlfriend were) the glaring screen can be super distracting, and people who are inconsiderate enough to do this kind of thing usually don't bother turning their screen brightness down either. and i'm still kinda shocked that someone could be so bored to mindlessly scroll through their phone in a screening of get out. like maybe during the second act but for the entire thing? the first act especially is tense as fuck. the only reasons i can think of is that the guy had either already seen it (but then why spend money on it again if you're not gonna watch) or got upset at the racial slant.

Really neat film... but they
left Logan behind and chris left all kinds of dna at the crime scene lol

I mean we don't know what happens next right? For all we know they go to the cops, and Chris has blood all over him so the cops will believe some shit happened.

Cops investigate, they find surgery equipment, photos of missing blacks, they find Logan and he's acting all weird, etc.

But the movie chose not to show this or other possible "endings" because ultimately it would ruin the pace, etc.

Yes it is. But you're in luck. He's now working on his second film and plans to do four more. Comcast just signed him a about a week ago..upped his budget from $4 mil to $25.

On Reddit I read there will be an alternate ending in the Blu Ray release I believe. I didn't like what I read. I'm glad they went with this one. This is what the poster said :

The alternate ending is on iTunes if you buy the movie. Chris kills Rose instead of letting her die on her own. Instead of Rodney arriving on scene, it's the cops. The next scene is at jail with Rodney talking to Chris and asking him to remember names to help with his case. Chris says something to the effect of "I stopped them and that's good enough for me." He hangs up the phone he was using to talk to Rodney and walks away.

Awesome. And do we know if those movies are going to be in the same genre? You say I'm in luck so I assume they are. :)

Yeah I can definitely see that being very annoying. Some people really just couldn't give a flying shit sadly. Would have been good if someone from the cinema had been there and gave him a warning.

Cross posting from spoiler thread as it doesn't seem very active, will obviously mark spoilers.

Just watched this. I enjoyed it but was disappointed to find I didn't love it. My girlfriend and I figured
some kind of body snatching thing was going on pretty early and as the movie went on (and now after reading the spoiler thread) it seems we probably weren't supposed to? Not trying to be all 'yo saw it coming a mile off', it just legit seemed pretty clear. This made the actual reveal a bit overdone, it was like yeah... we know.

I also struggled with the tone a little bit, and I think this is at least partially on me. Cause I know it was Peele who wrote and directed it I couldn't help but think of a sketch where the premise is:
"what if Black people were body snatched by White people".

"Snitching? What is snitching? Oh, you must mean tattletale!" *laughter track*

This meant that some of the scenes that were clearly meant to be disturbing or unsettling lacked impact.

I loved the friend, and how Chris did not muck around when he got free. The acting and writing are all top-notch, and the movie looks great too.

Yeah, Green Room certainly kicks things up a notch a few times after the tame opening ~20 minutes.

So I saw The Guest yesterday and sadly didn't like it as much as I thought after reading some impressions here.

I don't find it anywhere near as good as Get Out for starters but also...

The parts where the military police is shooting at David and they just can't seem to get him. In fact David manages to kill them all except for the leader and the way he kills them is a bit too actioney for me, not Rambo but neither incredibly far away from it.

Later on he manages to kill the leader of the military police and he even survives the fatal stabbing, yeah I doubt that. Really didn't like that ending at all. I wasn't expecting to like the dude though, he definitely stood up for that family more than once and it was rather fucked up how easily he just killed the parents and that waitress like it was nothing. None of it mattered then and he was just heartless?

Ok, he's protecting his ID and that program but come on.

Enjoyable though.

That is an affirmative. Wants to stick to these original stories dealing with social issues. Definitely looking forward to it..

Really nice! I had been looking on IMDB at his Director section and I didn't see it yet. So IMDB probably hasn't updated it yet.

I thought it was decent to good. After all the hype it was a bit disappointing. Maybe it was a bit ruined for me when I found out a particular character was a villian because of their MTV nominee as best villian.

I liked this. Didn't love it, but I did like.

It wasn't really good as a horror movie... but it was great as a social satire of being black in America. I don't think I've really ever seen a popular movie articulate the way in which black people are consistently Othered. The way in which it even skewered white liberals and the way they Other blacks was very biting. Flashbacks to my well meaning, educated, liberal mother asking Asian waitresses "where are you from?" (Answer: Toronto lol). I would not be surprised at all if she's innocently told a black person they're so well spoken ....

The horror premise itself is so silly and non-scary that I think this must have started as a comedy sketch, but Peele was prompted to play it straight as a film.

Saw it last night and it was a hell of a fun ride. Reminded me a lot of Hitchcock.

Some slight issues.
I'm not sure I really buy the explanation for why they only wanted to use black people as replacement bodies. Because "it was in style?" That wasn't sufficiently explained to achieve credibility for me. The blind guy himself said he didn't care for skin color, he only cared about his eyes. It would only make sense if they all belonged to a cult that worshiped being black or something.

Very much agree. The reasoning for wanting
black bodies
was very unexplained and seemed like a missed opportunity to take the social commentary further.

I guess there might be some "everybody want to be black but no one wants to be black" style commentary there but I thought it was too muddied to be successful.

i thought the blind guy
was supposed to embody white people who verbally disagree with racism yet will gladly profit from it (white moderates i guess), hence why he openly distances himself from the others at the party but in the end still uses their racist shit for his own benefit - to get his eyesight back.

and i thought the reason why they wanted
black bodies
was made pretty clear -
they all prescribed to the stereotypical idea that black bodies were physically superior. you had the brother assume that chris would be a great fighter during the dinner scene, the father point out how his father, despite being a supposedly great athlete, was beaten by a black man during the olympics, and a bunch of white people during the party scene presuming that chris was really strong and sexual since he was black.

Great film, I loved the whole thing.
Being hypnotized, and the idea of the being stuck in the sunken place forever was horrifying.

One thing I didn't understand or pick up on,
but why were they doing brain surgery on that white guy towards the end of the film?

That surgery was so that they could transplant his brain into Chris' body like they did with the grandpa and grandma and more.

Weird... I thought for some reason
they were just lobotomizing the auctioned off slaves to make them more perceptible to hypnosis or keep them under control. I wonder why it was that they temporarily reverted back to their former personalities after being flashed by a camera then, or why they remain as a "passenger" inside the body? Are they only transplanting part of the brain? Or were they only performing brain transplants on a few of them?

Also kinda hard to believe
that some racist order in the middle of nowhere happened to have mastered successful brain transplants with a surgery team of one, no less :p

It's about to open in Mexico soon and I think I wanna see this film but I fucking hate horror movies that rely on cheap jumpscares instead of good suspense.

Does this movie have jumpscares? And if it does does it rely on them too much?

Well that was a good movie. I'm glad that i stayed away from all ads and trailers. Only thing that was a bit annoying was the music and couple jump scare things early in the movie.

I enjoyed it but the twist was very obvious to me

As soon as the maid and gardener were shown I was like "they are making them slaves/mind controlling them and the daughter is up to no good"

Honestly I felt like this movie was more of a suspense thriller than it was horror - although it had some horror elements. There are one or two light jumpscares that I can recall, but nothing too obnoxious.

The dude basically explained the whole procedure.

Yeah, I just rewatched that scene I guess I missed a part of what he said there for some reason. I noticed he also called
Chris one of the lucky ones, and that Jeremy's wrangling methods sounds much less pleasant. Wonder what he meant by that.

The first part isn't correct at all though. You got hit with the misdirection, then the actual twist was revealed later.
