The Surge [Sci-fi Souls-like, PS4/XBO/PC] Out May 16th

No it doesn't, you automatically hit the part that is highlighted no matter where you swing.
If so that's a little disappointing. But yeah I to have heard from 5 different sources that it isn't the case. Totalbiscuit's video was the last video I saw that mentioned it as well.

The Giant Bomb quick look was the first I'd heard of this game, and it completely sold me on it. I actually really like the visual design of the game, though it's a shame to hear there might not be a huge amount of variety.

I've seen quite a lot of gameplay so dont really want to watch another video but could you sum up their thoughts? I've seen varying reactions to their video with some saying it put them off...

Did GB dig it?

You played the Surge already on Pro?

I've put about 15 hours in on a Pro, and the 60 fps mode is very solid. No input lag or frame pacing.

Prey had such bad input lag I had to stop playing it. The only other game that was so bad I had to stop playing was Rise of the Tomb Raider on the XB1.

I think Prey has worse input lag than even that game.

This is a know bug which occurs when you have *very* high framerates (> 120 FPS) and will be fixed with a patch soon.
In the meanwhile, you can add the following line to your settings.ini:

Code:
max_frame_rate = 120

if it doesn't help, try:

Code:
max_frame_rate = 60

Will do that right now. Thank you for the news and will edit this once I try out the workaround.

Edit: It worked! The particles look great now. I went with a max_frame_rate of 72, just to keep it at half of my refresh rate of 144Hz. Thank you so much for that info. This should hopefully make some enemy attacks a little easier to see coming (fire attacks were especially troublesome for me because of this). This was the first game I really threw at my 1080TI that I had installed literally a couple of hours before starting this game, so I wasn't sure if I had a hardware issue or not. It's honestly a relief to know for sure.

Well, yes, absolutely and that is exactly why (amongst other things) i will play Prey multiple times. But Souls (and Souls-like) games in not about multiple endings (even though they have them), characters and story overall and all of this is nowhere near as important in these games as the gameplay. Hell, i'll even go as far as to say that From understands nothing about storytelling and how to tell an interesting story etc. in their games. Their questlines is fucked up and quest overall is extremely poorly developed, structured etc. to even care about them and story all that much. You can even easily miss a lot of quest in these games and even if you do manage to start some of them, you can't complete them unless you know exactly what to do and that's another reason not to care about them, cuz you can't do most of this stuff without knowing what to do and what is fun about this when you need to read guides to complete quest (not always, but most of the time)? I mean, I guess you could say that it's a charm of these games but to hell with it. I don't like this shit one bit and don't look at Souls (and Souls-like) games as story driven games cuz frankly, they are not.

Sure, the lore in Souls games is very interesting and it's a good thing indeed to have people who dedicate their time to make all this together and make a video explaning all this to you, cuz I and other people simply don't give a fuck and don't care all that much about any of this in terms of trying to gather info about the world and learn something from it by making a full picture. What I'm trying to say here is that Souls games is not story driven games and NG+ is barely justifyes multiple playthroughs in terms of story and endings or at least that's not the main thing to do for some or most people (unless of course they really wan't to complete everything and get all the items etc.). And since we talking about story.... The story in Lords of the Fallen was mediocre at best and nowhere near deep and interesting enough to make you play the game again because of it. If you wan't me to make a comparison.... the story in this game is not better than in Deadfall Adventures for example and let's be frank, would you really expect something amazing from The Surge in terms of story and all that? No offence to developers, but I sure as hell not expecting anything remotely interesting from The Surge in terms of story after Lords of the Fallen and can you honestly blame me for this? Really?

How can you possibly build a tank character in a million different ways in Lords of the Fallen and in The Surge, when there's simply zero systems, mechanics and all that to give you an ability to do so and in comparison to Souls games which do have all these things?

Nah, of course not. Lords of the Fallen is the only game i've played which featured NG+))))))

P.S. I'm waiting reviews just like everybody else, but i don't have high hopes for this game, although it's good to know that it is a much better game in terms of gameplay and combat than Lords of the Fallen.
My point that I was trying to make, is that NG+ in Souls games isn't as good as you make it out to be. Everything you can accomplish through NG+, you can pretty much accomplish just by doing a fresh playthrough with a new character. The only Souls game that actually had a decent NG+ system was Dark Souls 2.

And the two things I said NG+ in The Surge has are multiple endings, and changes to the experience (such as new enemy encounters and loot).

The lack of build diversity in Lords of the Fallen, and possibly The Surge, doesn't really have anything to do with NG+. The games just aren't designed to have such diversity in building you character.

Bloodborne is the same way, and that was created by Miyazaki himself. So what, Miyazaki doesn't understand his own games?

There are two options:

Default is you push the right stick to pick different body parts, and it locks them.

You can also choose to hold the right stick on the part you want to occent with, so you can make more fluid combos between them.

Does the game have a story? Or is it similar to souls where it's not in the forefront?

Also, what's the reason that it's seeming like a sleeper hit?

You don't contact the part visually, the only differences I've noticed in attack pattern/swing come from aiming high or low. Aiming for the limb serves only to deliver damage to that part to take advantage of vulnerabilities and to decide what part you'll try to remove with a finisher.

Thinking about how it will review, I actually expect this game to have a MC score similar to LotF, if not lower. Which is kinda funny, since supposedly it's quite an improvement upon its predecessor. But I guess critics were less harsh when LotF came out.

If I had to guess: Lords of the Fallen.

Phew, my review is finally done! This year continues to be REALLY GOOD.

I fully recommend it playing it on a Pro [like I did] or PC. 60fps is a must for Souls-like games.

The Surge |OT| Edge of Souls
The Surge |OT| Live, Die, Repeat
The Surge |OT| District Souls
The Surge |OT| Soulysium

I have a feeling it might depend on the reviewer looking at it from a dark souls clone point of view or not

Now what's the next step in your master plan?

I'm pushing for:

The Surge |OT| Limb, SciFi, Repeat

Gotta get those puns in there.

Yes.

Doing a video this week.

Possibly the best implementation of PS4 Pro support to date. A nice change from Prey which has none (despite the Pro logo)

Any impressions about the HDR support? I'm seeking for more reasons to spend a bunch of money on a new TV. 😁

This game is often in dark industrual areas with bright neon lights. I presume the HDR would look awesome there.

HDR came later they tweeted a while ago. So its not in at launch.

High Dynamic Range (HDR) support will be added with a second update a bit after the release.

Seems like an awesome game certainly will try to snatch a copy later this year.

Gameplay looks very interesting and the armour breaking parts and weakspots are nice + new game + havig remixed enemies is quite cool.

Sorry, but multiple endings and changes to the experience are FAR more important aspects of NG+ than being able to build your character in a million different ways...
Disagree on that. I don't care much about slightly varying cut scenes. However, rebuilding the character in many different ways is a huge appeal of Souls games and, well, does change the experience.

That said, this has nothing to do with NG+. I always just make new NG playthroughs when creating fresh builds anyway. NG+ in Souls games are meh except in DS2.

Maybe thats my issue. I only use one type of weapon. I'll need to work on those other weapons.

I used that damn osprey blade or whatever lol. Its massive and upgrading it seemed to do BETTER. But remembering those guys are pretty damned stout regardless.
You can always just favorite it for quick equipping to see if it helps. It of course then requires different timing.

I posted in a different thread and I know you already got the first OT title picked out but I'm throwing this in the ring if there's an OT2.

The Surge |OT| Don't give up exoskeleton!

Can you quick-change between weapons like in Souls, or do you have to go into a menu?

I'm so torn right now, after watching the GB quick look I've gone from "didn't know at all about this game" to "ok now I'm hyped", but this week Injustice 2 is coming out and Prey is on my wishlist as well, so I have no fucking idea what to buy lol

First world problems I guess

Well, if you're on PS4 it seems Prey is hardly recommendable, so that's one less.

And I've reviewed the game.

I was doing extra damage every single time I targeted a weak limb no matter where my weapon was actually hitting.

Can you tell us how long it took you or is that also embargoed?

Anyone playing, can you tell me where to go? I got to the Bio area, got the upgrade to surge high up switches. No clue no where I head to next. I even went back to the second large area and found a tower section open with the new ability but cannot for the love of me figure out what next. The tower just took me in a circle. This game could highly benefit from a metroidvania style map.
