The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild |OT3| Your Free Time is Badly Damaged

My daughter started playing from the start and a few auto saves later, my file is gone. All my progress, gone. How is that possible? A save file with a star next to it should never be able to be deleted. I am so sad.

Wow tough break.

It's crazy you can't have multiple save files in this game. I know you can make a new profile but it seems so dumb. All zeldas have three save files damn it!

An NPC in Rabia Plains mentioned something about a person at the top of the "North Tower" north of the Rutala River, but I've no idea what he's talking about. Any ideas?

Here's my log:
About 80 hours
All four Divine Beasts conquered
About 60% of the memories (going for them all now)
90 shrines

I don't even know what to do after this game. I want to get all 120 shrines and all of the memories and SOME armor upgrades but not all.

I don't really play games like this. I never really put much time in a single file. I have played games for hundreds of hours (MK, Smash, Mario Galaxy, Bloodborne) but these are either multiple files or just multiplayer.

I suspect I'll finish around 110-120 hours. That's just crazy for me.

Love this game. I need to let it sit to see where it stands for my favorites ever.

I feel it was supposed to be the first stop in some way, especially with the ability you eventually get. Like you were supposed to run towards the castle, see how crazy it looks, then run towards the flying thing in the sky. The road to get there is laid out nicely and it leads into harsher conditions very gently. Going from there to Eldin is really fun too.
I agree. The flying beast is also the most obvious, which draws your attention. You see it unobscured, from practically everywhere.

Rito village was the easiest area to get to for me. Not sure what makes it more difficult than any other. There are no difficult temperature or weather conditions and the area is relatively sparse of monsters.

I think we all agree is the easiest. Its just that is the area farthest away from the plateau/kakariko/hateno quest so its likely that it wont be the first one to be visited.

90 hours
66 shrines
And of course all the beasts conquered.

I was seriously considering doing all 120 shrines but the location of a couple of them pissed me off, so I just decided to finish the game. I didn't want it to end but I did need to move on.

So as someone who has never finished the original Zelda, I would love for Nintendo to release the first game with BotW's engine.

Right that's what I'm saying.

What paths did you guys take to get there? I'm just huffing it straight through the middle, but it's difficult because there are quite a few higher-level mobs and a bunch of guardians along the way I needed to carefully avoid.

I just went to Kakariko and Hateno first, upgraded my Shikah slate a bit, and then started heading toward the Rito area.

I did Zora first after 45 hours or so, didn't do my second beast until 140 hours (Rito)... Still have two more to go.

Part of the reason I've been delaying the beasts is because I really hate that the red beam it shoots at the castle is visible at all times when exploring the world. One beam was bad enough, having 4 is going to ruin my beautiful Hyrule skyline :p

Do yourself a favor and take those fights, it's how the game gives you weapons that withstand the area. Remember, technically, everything is the same level as you.

So what's the going rate or average play time for this game? I'm approaching 200 hours which is insane for me. I don't think I'm that different from the average GAF member but this is way high for me. The Switch makes it so easy to log hours on the game.

Other than fighting fames, I have never but this much into a game on my first play through.

Also I just had a Revenant moment before running into a "Zebra Lynnel". This game just keeps giving.

So I FINALLY love this game.

The aimless exploring for the sake of it wasn't clicking with me. I was hoping the guide I bought would help keep the pacing up, and it sort of did and it didn't.

For the main quests, side quests, where to go etc. there's literally no point in using the guide.

What I did do though is take the korok seeds map, and every time I got to a new area, placed a marker where each one was. I didn't know what each korok would be, or exactly where it was, but it gave me a reasonably good idea.

It gave me a reason to explore the map more, and the rest if the game fell in to place! It's still not a game I'm dying to get home and play, but I can happily play it for a few hours at a time, and it's not a struggle any more. In fact I love it :)

After the frenzy of MK relaunch online play has sort of calmed down, I've taken up from where I left this game again.

Still early on, but I've cleared my first Divine Beast
Vah Naboris up in Zora's domain, which was really fun,
but a bit short. I enjoyed figuring out how to manipulate the gears with the trunk etc, and how to reach all the chests.

The dungeons, main quests and side quests really feel like a minor part of the game, I spend so much time trekking, looking for cool stuff, fighting random enemy camps, locating shrines and towers haha.

Really enjoying my time with it, it feels like a game that should absolutely not be rushed.

Do you guys know if it's possible to climb down the great plateau when the game begins? This doesn't serve any purpose but I was just curious to know if it's possible to explore areas you're not supposed to have access to at the beginning of the game.

When I finally got the glider thing from the old guy, out of curiosity I tried not using the glider and simply climbed down and I was able to but I was thinking the game probably doesn't allow you to do that at the very beginning. Am I right?

I cleared my first divine beast after about 40 hours of play (
the Zora one
). It was alright but I don't know. I love the game and I can see myself sinking 200 hours into it but it doesn't feel like the Zelda I'm used to. I'm so glad this game exists don't get me wrong but at the same time it feels like I'll have to look elsewhere in the future if I want to experience something like Ocarina of Time or Majora's Mask and I'm kinda bummed about it.
Anyway, no idea where I'll go next, I'm exploring Akkala at the moment since I needed to go there to see the scientist. I'd like to see that korok dude again because I'm a weapon hoarder and I want more slots, but I have no idea where to start.

Nah, I tried to climb down a bit to reach a korok seed at the beginning and after like 5 meters it just shows you falling down to your death even though your stamina meter is still half full.

Considering this is the very first time they've done a Zelda like this, it's not out of the question to think the next time around they'll attempt to mesh in more of the traditional parts of Zelda than they did in this game.

There's an autokill forcefield.

Yeah I don't think I've played any other game this much (150 hours so far, and I don't get to play every day, haven't played in a few days)... I may have put this many hours into MGS2 on PS2 (multiple playthroughs) or Final Fanatasy VIII on PS1... But it's telling that I have to go back that far to find a game that took a hold over me like this. And I'm still far from done.

My friend has put 230 hours into Zelda and counting, and this is the first game he played since the PS2 days I think! Imagine quitting gaming for over 10 years and then a game comes along and sucks you in for 200+ hours.

Breath of the Wild is a beast.

Really hope they patch blood moons, 30 or so hours in and all 6 have ended the second the cutscene ends.

If you close the game and/or restart the Switch it will fix the bug. It happens when you haven't closed the game in a long time.

No it's possible, many people have tried. The best they could do was use Stasis on a metal door and ride it to a lake near the plateu, but you can't explore much before the game plays the "Link falls to his death" sound and Game Over. It's on YouTube.

Why does the
Master Sword
seem so
underwhelming? I've finished up all the beasts and start to seek out this thing. I find the Lost Woods, get the required number of hearts, and pull out this sword that's only 30 attack, and worse, can become disabled after overuse?

I was hoping to finally not have to worry about weapon breakage and something more representative of the "ultimate weapon" but eh. Seems more like a story items than anything.

I'm aware of the projectile attack at full health but haven't used it that extensively yet.

Almost ready to finish the game off. Done 40 shrines, all 4 Divine Beasts, all 12 memories and the
master sword
.

Mainly just roaming around for now, fighting Lynels and Guardians for fun and finishing off some quests. Fought my first silver Lynel at the top of a snowy Gurudo mountain today too. Genuinely a challenging fight.
I feel like the Lynels could be put into the next Dark Souls' game and fit right in with the rest of the bosses without changing anything about them except the art style.

Tarrey Town was by far the best of the bunch, but gathering 150 wood total really dragged it down. Just seemed like needless padding for an already lengthy quest.

It's much, much stronger
inside the beasts and Hyrule Castle
(as well as against
Guardians
).

Anyone know if there are clothes that help against the coldest cold on the mountains! I have the Rito made sweater but it doesnt seem to be enough.

I think (or at least I don't know nay other way) you need two pieces of cold-resistant gear then, either that or one piece + cold protection potion.

After beating the game last month, I started up again with a self-imposed challenge:

  • Limiting my weapons to simply 1-handed swords. Among those, can't use rods, boko clubs, lizal boomerangs, and skeleton arms, partly for "not being swords", but moreso because monster weapons are too readily available. This has lead to barely beating some big enemies with only one badly damaged sword remaining.
  • Though swords are my primary weapon, I decided it'd be fair to have 1 (and only 1) of an extra "weapon" type, between spears, 2-handers, shields, bows, or "magic" (runes, chuchu jellies, rods, korok leaf). I went with bows. The rule is that I can only carry one bow at a time, and only use regular arrows. Also, no multishot bows. Exceptions for quests like
the korok wood trial and any sand seal surfing quests
    .
  • Can only wear one piece of armor in each slot for the entire game (and nude until you get said piece). Of these, the Ancient armor set, Diamond Circlet, and Champion's Tunic aren't allowed cuz they provide too much protection. I'm rolling with Ruby Circlet, Climbing Shirt, and Stealth Pants. Exceptions for quest required stuff (
    Zora Armor, Gerudo set
). Limiting myself to 1 Great Fairy per dungeon completed.
  • No Sheikah Slate stuff, including the map, telescope, rune use outside of shrines (except when required by quests), sensor, and pro-style GUI. I can't even check the in-game clock or temperature. This has made me have to pay attention to where I am, where I'm going, and when night is falling. Also means I can't trivialize nighttime enemies or ore deposits with remote bombs. I also have to resist the urge to grab those random metal chests in ponds.
  • No Hestu, though I might change that to something like "1 upgrade per dungeon completed". So far, the inventory cap on weapons hasn't been an issue.
  • No teleporting. This sounds worse than it is, since I know where I'm going, and I can use a horse. Oh, and I figure that since I'm not fast traveling, neither should my horse, so no matter where it is, I have to track it down if I want to use it (or find a wild one). Anyway, the main reason for this is to keep myself from warping between various locations to stock up on free swords.
  • No cooking food, only elixirs. Can eat cooked foods acquired from saving people/quests. Everything else has to be eaten raw or frozen/burned. This has made me think a bit harder about capturing bugs and things, instead of just accumulating a million mushrooms.
  • No raiding Hyrule Castle for goodies til after all 4 dungeons are completed
  • No carrying fairies, but can use them to heal on the spot.
  • Champion powers
    turned off
  • Can collect
    Master Sword/Hylian Shield
    , but can't use them
  • No Robbie-made gear, not even ancient arrows you find
So far, it's been a blast to play it again and the challenge hasn't waned like it had in my first playthrough when I took advantage of everything. I find myself wanting to explore every corner yet again, since I'm often starved for suitable weapons.

If I buy the Snowquill clothing from Rito Village, can I go to cold regions without making a cold resistant elixir?

Edit: whoop! Right above me...

Help me pls

I had to take a big break from this after putting around 35h in at launch week and now I have time to play it again I feel directionless. I want to experience everything, but at the same time I feel like I'm not making a lot of progress.

Does anyone have any tips for getting back into it? Should I just do some of the main quest til I get a grip again? How do you guys ensure you're not missing anything in the open world?

I would ignore the main quest for now. Just look for shrines for a while, which is fun and rewarding for its own sake, and you'll surely get distracted by a hundred other things along the way and you'll get your groove back in no time.

Just beat Medoh... And damn I'm amazed, yes it was short but this might be one of the best songs in the game, the violin is just soooo mellow... That and Revali's tsundere atitude made me feel for the guy, I really wish there was a way for us to revive them, their stories feel so sad. Dying and waiting 100 years in hope to fulfill their purpose... True heroes :´(

I am approx 90 hours in with 78 shrines, 180 seeds and still 5 areas unexplored.

This game is huge.

I dont really care about seeds but I do look for them. My goal is to explore all the areas I havent yet and hopefully get to 120 shrines without a guide.

Has there been any explanation why Zelda has stayed young during the 100 years?

No it was not explained in game but the same thing happened with Skyward Sword Zelda. Trapped herself in stasis or something to hold off the big bad and survive how many years it would take the hero to get there.

Edit:

People generally do not physically age when they are dead.

Zelda is actually the one person involved in the calamity that didnt die or age.

The visual of her freezing herself in crystal helped make that immediately obvious there, while here, mostly leaving the method by which she used to seal herself and Ganon ambiguous - as well as the speck of light being able to be interpreted as a representation of her communicating from afar until she actually materialises from it - mean it's pretty easy to not get that it was more of a stasis thing.

Aside from how it actually did work ingame, I do still think having her be aged or dead in the present would have been the better choice dramatically.

Always found Talus fights to be tedious, but I think I just found a very quick to dispatch of them:
Rivali's Gale > Mighty Lynel Bow x3 Bomb Arrows to their weak spot
= massive damage.

I love that the multiple arrow bows only consume one arrow from your inventory.

Is there anything that lets you swim in cold water without getting hurt? I thought the full Rito armor set would do it but nope.

Anyone else mixing/matching armor sets (Fashion Souls)?

I have a 4 star Guardian chest and leggings but no helm because I don't like how it looks. I am aware that I am missing out on the full set bonuses by mixing.

I wish the Kilton pieces were upgradable as well.

I had a couple of combinations that I didn't mind, but the one I ended up using most was the Goron leg armour with the Zora torso piece and ruby circlet, dyed black/dark grey. It turned out surprisingly well.
