In an interview once Henry Rollins said something like, "I saw Chris in this tiny little club just peeling the paint of the walls with that voice of his." That description of his vocal power really stuck with me.

Sometimes, someone represents a moment in time, in your life, and their passing reminds you of so many great things, sad things, they represent a snap shot of that moment in your life, it brings a lot of emotion with it.
Well said.

The more I read and think about this, the more I get genuinely sad. Especially if the headlines about the suicide is true. Fuck.

When you factor in that Vedder is standing there because Andrew Wood was the first casualty, it makes the thing a whole lot bleaker. I can't think of another scene with this high of a mortality rate.

And it was my favorite music in my early teens... still is.

No wonder Im a depressed suicidal drug addict.

Sure, one can recover... but when something like this happens you realize there is relapse around every corner.

When you least expect it.

I remember that quote too and it is such a perfect description of his amazing voice.

Yeah.....definitely a case like Robin Williams betting.

It's a battle you really need a lot in life to help get you through it. Fame and money might help for a time but it's always there with you, like your shadow.

While Robbin battled depression, the catalyst for his suicide was his battle with parkinsons.

It's such a bummer. As a kid I was able to see my parents music heroes (page/plant, the stones, Paul McCartney) live. My children aren't going to have that luxury. Of my favorite bands only Pearl Jam remains for my children to see.

Thanks man.

Its kinda like when you lose a pet, I lost my dog last year, and you just start thinking about this 10 year long journey you had, and he/she was always there throughout it all. It make things like Chris's death sting. I just remember the summers, listening to Soundgarden in high school with my friends on the the weekends, after school. Girls you had crushes on. Finding out who Mudhoney was. Sucks man. I bought flannels just to tie them around my waist with my jeans on, Makes me smile thinking about it.

So much emotion, It just makes you feel.

My wife told me the news as I came back to bed at 3 am after going to the bathroom. I just stood there slumped with my arms at my side for 15 minutes.

My last dream before waking this morning was crossing paths with Kim Thayil and just hugging and sobbing

I've been crying all day, especially after finding out it was suicide after spending much of 2016 dealing with some severe depression.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=K47iOp6JDqk- Rowing got me through chunks of it, and is so hard to listen to now

Badmotorfinger and Superunknown molded me. I finally got to see them on the King Animal tour in 2013. 3rd row. http://www.setlist.fm/setlist/sound...nitzer-concert-hall-portland-or-73dbda49.html

This is going to take a long time to get over

This fucking blows chunks. A terrible loss for the music industry.

I was introduced to Soundgarden through the 3D Road Rash videogame. Been a Chris Cornell fan since. His Audioslave stuff is very different in comparison, but still worthy of his name. Like A Stone really reminds me of Soundgarden stuff in the best way.

I still hear the sound of a bike chain shattering glass whenever I hit up Rusty Cage. One in a million marriage of audio and visual cue.

The song "Seasons" is an instant rush of nostalgia and remembering a more innocent and youthful time. If you were there, this will bring up some memories for you. It certainly does for me.

His cameo in Singles was pretty cute too:

Sigh. My youth is just getting wiped out.

Reminded me that I saved the Singles OST on Spotify (dammed if I know where I put the CD I bought years ago!). Seasons really shows the strength of his voice.

Was bummed hearing about his death. Suicide makes me feel much worse. But I always do with suicide. To think that someone could be in that bad a state and, worse still for me, alone.

Temple of the Dog - Times of Trouble

"I saw you swinging
Swinging your mother's sword
I know you're playing but
Sometimes the rules get hard
But if somebody left you out on a ledge
If somebody pushed you over the edge
If somebody loved you and left you for dead
You got to hold on to your time till you break
Through these times of trouble"

:( :(

RIP Chris. The voice of my generation :(

Yeah, the grunge scene was pretty nuts when it came down to deaths.

I was an Assistant Cameraman on a short film that a friend of mine wrote and directed two years ago that used a fictional grunge star to parody that whole death angle and how people reacted to the news of a celebrity dying.

It was a great short and got some play at various film festivals, but god does it feel weird to think back on that movie right now with the news of Cornell's death.

Not much to add here that hasn't already been said...

Dude was a vocal legend for my generation. Superunknown and Badmotorfinger got constant play in my teen years.

RIP

Man, suicide is such a trash way to escape.

It's hard for me to feel for these types of deaths because I just can't comprehend it.

Don't know why I'm replying because you're obviously a drive-by shitposter.

But, imagine someone dying from a degenerative heart disease. This is exactly the same. A disease killed him, a real, terrible, actual disease.

Rest In Peace Chris. One of maybe three vocalists that I would say are the greatest in rock.

I got grudge sucked!
It seems every surprise on OT is a bad surprise. RIP Chris Cornell, I liked Soundgarden quite a bit

Sigh. My youth is just getting wiped out.

I know that feel. I'm 43, Soundgarden was just getting nationwide exposure with Bamotorfinger when I was in high school. Its just an odd feeling when someone who contributed to the soundtrack of your life just up and leaves. It like a part of yourself dies too.

Wow, was really sad to hear this. And Scott Weiland just last year or so too, all these talented '90s rockers passing too soon. :(

My two favorite Cornell vocals will probably always be Burden in my Hand and his singing on Hunger Strike by Temple of the Dog.

Wow, how does Iggy Pop still live and guys like this keep on dying.

It's amazing to me.

I hate grunge and Nirvana/Kurt Cobain in general with about fifteen leagues of venomous passion, but this dude was okay. I actually could tolerate Soundgarden. Black Hole sun ain't a bad tune with a crazy music video to boot.

This was a total shock to me. Like many others in this thread, Chris Cornell is my favorite singer. Such a powerful and unique voice. No other singer I've heard (I listen to a lot of metal so I've heard a lot of wailers) sounds like him. And yet, when he's singing softly, it is a real goddamn pleasure to listen to. As a result, Euphoria Morning is a real underrated classic that more people should listen to.
To anyone who only listened to Soundgarden from Badmotorfinger on, I highly encourage you to check out their older stuff. Louder Than Love especially. It's a few steps removed from Badmotorfinger so it's quite a bit heavier than Superunknown and Down on the Upside. But goddammit Chris kills it in that album. Also, his best live stuff seems to be from Badmotorfinger era on back where he was basically in his prime. There was one video of Beyond the Wheel posted in here from way back in the day that blew my mind. But I can't seem to find it :(
Anyway, Rip. That dude will always have a huge place in my heart. So sad it came down to this and he could not get any help. Side note. Does Bishoptl still post here? He always stuck in my mind as a huge Chris Cornell fan and I imagine he must be devastated..

saw he passed away early this morning before I went to sleep... such terrible news, I have been listening to "Sunshower" on and off today and I always felt that this is one of his best solo career songs. I haven't seen anyone talk about that song surprisingly...

What time is it?

If you or love ones haven't experienced that type of depression, suicide is really hard thing to wrap your head around. It's probably even more confounding to see one of that stature and success take his own life. I'm not trying to excuse the ignorance but it's pretty common.

Also love what he does in Soundgarden's cover of Smokestack Lightning:

A natural baritone should not be able to hit the notes he does in the last part of that song.

Sad to hear though, I saw him live just last year and he was great, and I think his last solo album was some of his best work.

I don't know if it will make any sense, but this past weekend I was thinking about childhood and growing up, and where I used to remember a lot of specific moments, people and events, the past and my memories of it have almost all consolidated into the image of a sunset. There's a certain sadness that sunset brings as a kid, because it feels like everything is shortly to come to an end when you have to go home and leave your friends and whatever you're doing behind for the night.

With lots of the people I grew up admiring dying off these days, their memories and things I associated with them are turning from bright, vivid, happy memories to reminders of how much is lost with each day. It's harder and harder to find the joy in things when they're increasingly associated with loss. Getting older sucks.

Really bummed about this, singing audioslave and soundgarden songs as a teen is how i taught myself to sing (or at least carry a tune a bit better.) Been listening to cornells voice since i was a kid via my dad, and i was actually really looking forward to more soundgarden after their reunion album. Super sad i never got to see him live in concert. Feeling a strong urge to go see vedder and homme live before theyre spirited away and i miss another chance.

Rip chris, what an amazing voice.

Excellent.

Good sir, that's a damn good portrait. Excellent stuff.

That drawing up there is a phenomenal piece.

That's really great drawing man.

Great work, thanks for sharing

Great work, DirtyLarry.

Amazing. Also "He had the voice of an angel yet the lyrics of someone battline demons" line couldn't be more spot on.

This is beautiful. Thank you for sharing.

Echoing above me. I want this on my wall, too.

That's fucking brilliant. I wish I could have it to hang on my wall.
Wow. Thank you all. I have shared a few portraits here before and never got barely a peep. So it is appreciated.

To those who said they would hang it on their wall, I am eventually going to get some prints made of my shit but I am also lazy. I have gotten my stuff printed out on several canvas sites and it comes out pretty damn good. I have been doing art for many years so I always do my stuff as if it was a painting as that is what I originally did. So seriously if you did want to, just send me a DM, I can size it up to whatever size you need and send you it as a PNG file and you can get it printed wherever you want.

It's slowly dawning on me. What a goddamn legend; he has impacted my life positively, that's for sure. I'm going to celebrate his life rather than mourn it. I've heard all his songs/albums except for the last soundgarden album. I don't know what I was waiting for, but I think I will listen to that tonight.
