Judge Dredd Mega-City One TV Show in development

DREDD is one of the best action movies of this decade. So refreshing to see an unstoppable force just rampage through the bad guys one scene after another.

It's kind of like John Wick actually, a very "pure" kind of action movie that knows what it's about and just cuts the fat

Probably won't bother with this. The recent Dredd film was boring as hell. Pretty for sure and I liked the sidekick sidestory but the action left a lot to be desired. Maybe it was because it came out so close to the first Raid but it lacked a certain... kineticism? It felt very static.

I'm expecting a production similar to The Man in the High Castle. Better though, since Dredd will attract more eyeballs than an obscure Philip K Dick story.

Man in the High Castle is the most watched show from Amazon's stable. And it's obvious it's pretty expensive.
Dredd would probably be a lot cheaper to make.

Ugh, has there been a TV show in the last 5 or so years that doesn't get bogged down in family melodrama? I have absolutely no hope for this.

I hope it aims high and goes for some social commentary/satire like Verhoeven along with the copious amounts of violence

Its more than just an action hero and the movies seem to forget about that.

And please if it has to be on a TV channel then FX, HBO or Starz only

As a longtime 2000 AD reader I absolutely loved Dredd and Urban killed it in the role. This is great news but I really hope they can get Urban back. It would diminish my interest otherwise.

Thought this sounded interesting

From todays interview with Kingsley owner of Rebellion he had this to say

While Judge Dredd will get top billing, the series is due to explore a broader canvas, Kingsley adds, bringing the city and its sprawling cast of characters to life. “We want to capture the atmosphere of Dredd, we want all the crazy fashions and the kneepads. We’re not going for comedy but there will be moments of light and dark, just like in the comics.”

In the longer term, Rebellion has ambitions to develop screen adaptations of other 2000AD stories, as well as video game properties including Sniper Elite and titles from their science fiction imprints Abaddon and Solaris.

So given a hypothetical unlimited budget tomorrow, who else would Kingsley get on the starting blocks for a 2000AD-based TV series? “Good question, and one that we’ve discussed at length. It’s a classic pub conversation!” he says. “So … well, Rogue Trooper, obviously, and Strontium Dog, and definitely Absalom”.

Has Karl Urban said anything yet? I feel like if he got vocal about a petition campaign or whatever to be Dredd then that means he hasn't been contacted yet. If he's silent, that means he's in and has to stay quiet until the official announcement

The producers were on the Thrillcast (podcast) - https://soundcloud.com/2000-ad/judge-dredd-mega-city-one talking about developments.

Yep was gonna post about this some points i quickly scribbled earlier to share, i may have missed points, or wrote some down wrong/misinterpreted so feel free to correct me. Only from thw first 20 mins so far.

They want Karl Urban But - yes theres been a lot of interest, many conversations with him about this, but he's also a full time actor with a busy schedule, they are gonna have some long & complicated conversations with him , and see where they go from there, basically too early to say yet, IF they can use him, and he is available to them then that would be absolutely brilliant but theres always a possibility he can be a bit busy, his schedule for other movies wont let him, basically they don't know at this stage but they wanna work with the best people they can find.

-Want to bring in old Characters and new never seen before for the show
- This is not Dredd 2
- They have put together some ideas so far for season one, so much in fact that they may have to split that into 2 seasons
- Tone is Gritty Realistic Street Tones and like 2012 Dredd, but will mash some ideas from Stallone movie (Don't panic) sort of the unrealistic, the larger than life insanity from that film (they spoke about only bits of the Stallone Movie that they liked, design of the city, the Angel Gang and the Abc Robot, though they don't know why it showed up in Megacity One) get the best of both of those two, mush it together to get really good long form telly, there was Good in the Stallone, but lots of Bad and it's the bad that they want to get rid of.
- They are Fans too as well (as owning it) and they are also listening to fans, and they are watching us online.

Listen to the podcast, there has been talks with him many of them, there are many more talks to be had, long and complicated ones, but it all depends on his film schedule, as he is a busy actor and things can go wrong etc, so they want the right people for the job. basically its too early to say.

Loving this! While '12 Dredd is clearly the superior movie, I do enjoy the '95 film despite its flaws. There definitely was some good in there and it does feel pretty close to the early 70s Dredd stories. Glad to see they're not ignoring it.

Thanks for the summary.

JUDGE DREDD: MEGA-CITY ONE Could See DREDD Actor Karl Urban Reprise The Role Of The Ruthless Lawman

While speaking on The 2000 AD Thrill-Cast, Mega-City One producer Brian Jenkins suggested that there have been discussions about bringing Karl Urban back on board to reprise the role, but that his schedule may not allow it.

“We have had many conversations prior to this, about all sorts of things. He’s also very busy, a full-time professional actor. So we’re going to have some long and complicated conversations I would imagine, and we’ll see where we go. It’s too early to tell yet, but if we can use him and he’s available to us, then I think that would be absolutely brilliant. There’s always a possibility he will be busy, or that his schedule for other movies won’t allow — basically, we don’t know at this stage.”

I think this might happen.

I appreciate that the film bombed commercially so can understand from one perspective but I honestly don't know why Netflix haven't jumped at the opportunity for a Dredd series.

It has a dedicated fanbase and the film was a critical success and has gained a huge amount of respect since release.

I would have thought it would fit in really well with their lineup and be a benefit to the platform.

They probably just think the Punisher and Dredd are basically the same thing, so why bother.

I honestly think Judge Dredd could do for the TV adaptation of these properties what Dredd, Deadpool, and Logan have done for them on the cinema end. Make it bloody violent, and gritty in contrast to the MCU shows.

I wonder if since Rebellion owns the rights they'll do a new Dredd game as well.

Well its odd because with their games they have decided with their gaming license they have said will allow other companies the chance to borrow the rights to make a game if they so wish (makes me wonder if they have been contacted previously)

Whereas they have decided the opposite with this T.V series now, they want full controll themselves

But my guess is yes, especially if the series is sucessful.
