Netflix just dropped a trailer for its seven-part docuseries The Keepers, which premieres on May 19. In this powerful footage that is sure to grab the same audience from Making a Murderer, the series is about the unsolved murder 40 to 45 years ago of a compassionate nun named Sister Cathy in Baltimore and the possible reasons for her death and the (probable) cover-up.

Through interviews with dozens of friends, relatives, journalists, government officials and Baltimore citizens determined to uncover the truth, director Ryan White (Serena, The Case Against 8) pieces together a story that goes beyond the death of a beloved Catholic schoolteacher to encompass clergy abuse, repressed memories and government and religious institutions that he says “at best, dropped the ball over the last 45 years – and, at worst, covered it up.”

The Keepers was produced by Film 45 and Tripod Media for Netflix. Along with White and Jessica Hargrave, Josh Braun, Ben Cotner, Jason Spingarn-Koff and Lisa Nishimura are executive producers.

Write-up taken from Deadline.

I haven't seen Making a Murderer yet, so I'll have to get around to that one first, but I'm so in for this one too.

Bumping this to say that it's out on Netflix today and is up now. Haven't had chance to watch yet but will hopefully check it out soon.

Just finished the second episode and it's evoking the same strong emotions that Making a Murderer did.

It's probably one of many untold stories around the same subject during that time period.

Came to post because I just needed a mental break.

I'm only on episode 3
and this tale is truly fucking gnarled and devastating. I'm fearful of what the many remaining episodes may bring... as if all the horrid shit Jean divulged in the previous episode wasn't awful enough, the story of Maskell bringing Terry Harris and her friend to be raped by two police officers is crushing. At this point I'm convinced that Maskell has to be one of the most evil and fucked up people who have ever lived.

Holy hell...

Ok so finished it, the story and the people in it is a lot better than the documentary itself unfortunately. Same problem I had with the director's previous work, The Case Against 8.

It's overly manipulative (especially with how it sets up the following episode at the end of current one), and it gets more speculative at times than is warranted (which granted is partially an inherent problem with a cold case with little evidence).

Still it's a good show and definitely worth a watch. If nothing else it seems to have pissed off the archdiocese of Baltimore (their twitter feed sure is something) which can only be a good thing.

Yeah, I don't know if I'll be watching this whole thing. Episode 1 had some nice setup (loved the two ladies heading up the investigation) but it kinda meandered off around the halfway mark. By the end of the hour I was just tired more than anything. It has me skeptical about there being 6 more hours worth of material that isn't just blind theorizing. Cause right now I already have the sense that this isn't a very focused doc

Didn't realize this was a Netflix series. They had a story on the Baltimore NPR station about exhuming a body to test it for DNA in this case. Not sure if the results complete invalidated this series or not.

Second episode is much better, though it becomes more of a personal story. A very sad story though. Makes you so angry.

They exhumed the body of the main priest Maskell
and they had DNA from cigarettes from the scene that *didn't* match his, but the series doesn't directly implicate him in her killing anyway, putting forward two other suspects - one of which they interview and is one shady bat-shit crazy loon.

Was a really good series, albeit one as biased as Making a Murderer.

I'm on the third episode it's a really well done series so far. Disgusting, but really intriguing and well done.

If I hadn't seen this thread I would have never found this. I looked through the documentary row, the new release row, the trending row, the recommended for you row.. I eventually gave up and searched manually for it, but it's kind of frustrating.

Really looking forward to watching this.

I'm on the last episode now and its crazy to say this, but Making a Murderer feels light in comparison. This slipped so far into my subconscious, after watching it I dreamed sister Cathy showed me what really happened to her. The anger I feel for those involved, the cover-up, that this can happen, the disgust. I had moments where I felt I shouldn't have watched it, but I'm glad I did.

Woah, are you serious?? I haven't started watching this series yet, but Making a Murderer had my blood pressure through the roof. I may have to pace myself with this one.

Maskell is a huge piece of shit.

quite the understatement. the last episode had me fuming, tremendously done series. i hope the release of this puts pressure on the state of Maryland to look into the case of Sister Cathy and pressure on the FBI in regards to the Malecki case. making a murderer did a good job of making the public come out and rail against the bullshit surrounding Brendan Dassey's court appearance

Finished down it today. Infuriating seeing the cover up and deception by the Church and seeing Maskell moved from school to school.

I did want to applaud the absolute strength and resolve of the victims, particularly Jean after all the shit they put her through.

Finished this today. A really great well made documentary series that is worth watching. Infuriating and sad with moments that are really engaging.

Yeah... I had absolutely no idea about the backstory of this case but after the second episode you realize what you're in for. Its not good. Its bad! Don't watch this!

That is some sick stuff that happened at that school. Wow. Maskell is truly evil priest. I mean like can't the Catholic Church apologize or something? They just keep denying this stuff.

You know, horror movies never scare me. But this show truly scared me. That's probably why I don't normally watch these true crime documentary series because they are just sad and scary. And the cover-up... damn.

Just started watching this last night, got through the second episode and had to stop there. I felt an incredible sense of disdain and nausea hearing about how Father Maskell abused these young women. What a powerful show.

Finished it tonight. Fascinating all the way through.

If there is an award for "Best Opening Credits," this show should be a lock. I watched that sequence riveted all seven times.

Overwhelmed with new members, Facebook group in 'The Keepers' shuts down

A Baltimore-based Facebook group featured in the Netflix docu-series “The Keepers” has temporarily been shut down in reaction to a flood of new members.

“The Keepers,” a seven-part series that revisits the 1969 disappearance and murder of Sister Catherine Cesnik, a teacher at Archbishop Keough High School in Baltimore, became available on the streaming service Friday.

On Sunday, Gemma Hoskins, co-founder of the public Facebook group Justice for Catherine Cesnik and Joyce Malecki, posted a note on its page: “Dear friends, due to a major traffic jam, this page is closed.”

A week prior to the series release, the group had just under 1,000 members.

“Since Friday, over 20k people have joined our cause on our [Facebook] page, Justice for Catherine Cesnik and Joyce Malecki.
It was necessary to close the page temporarily due to a traffic jam and a technical glitch,” Hoskins wrote in an email to The Baltimore Sun Wednesday. “Netflix and [Facebook] are working to resolve the issues.”
