Utawarerumono Mask of Deception - |OT| Underwater Ray Romano

Parakeetman

No one wants a throne you've been sitting on!
For the most part bunch of the info was from the JP release / Gematsu articles so just kept that stuff instead of having to further redo things with all the text from the Atlus website which is basically the same thing.

This series is a personal favorite of mine and most def worth checking out if one is a fan of the Visual Novel genre or just wants something thats narrative heavy with a decent story to go through. But just keep in mind game is mostly reading / listening to all the voice acting with some sections of SRPG action.

As a request to those who would be discussing sections of the game in this thread, please be considerate to others and use well labeled spoiler tags.

Great OP.

Incredibly hyped for this and hope my US Vita copy arrives relatively promptly.

Haven't finished the original's anime yet though. Weird question, I know, but any chance watching it concurrently with starting MoD wouldn't be a completely terrible idea?

Are there spoilers for the first game early on in MoD?

Not really. Characters who appeared in the first game dont show up till later on.

The timeline here while not exactly sure how many years to be exact, it takes place years after the events of the first game though.

Would suggest trying to finish the first anime if schedule permits.

Ta - will continue watching the anime but start the game as soon as it arrives rather than waiting to finish.

I have to admit, I've been wanting to try this series just because of Sting. I'm a huge fan of everything Sting does but lately they've been doing nothing but RPG parts of Aquaplus games. Dungeon Travelers was fantastic and I only have heard good things about Utawarerumono.

Getting this for my Vita as soon as it hits PSN.

Great OP. Interesting game. Never heard of it.

The thread title made me click. So good!

Just keep in mind its going to be far more story than action and such. If you dont mind that hopefully you will enjoy the game. Great cast of characters and the voice acting is top notch.

Waiting for reviews. I really like the look of this, but I need some form of confirmation first that it's actually any good.

For people without access to the original anime, the fighting game Aquapazza (PS3) gives you a nice, quick exposition to the characters of the original Utawarerumono.

Will be interesting to see how reviews go. As it will either be people who are fans of the anime as the original game never was officially released in the West. Or you will be having reviewers who have had zero contact with the series and will be diving into this one totally blind. Which possibly could leave them with questions about the story.

If you like the visual novel genre you should enjoy the game.

Review isn't done yet (neither is my playthrough. nearly though) but is this the OST? https://www.amazon.co.jp/dp/B01AS06GPO/

probably gonna import it. Really enjoying it.

Yeah thats the OST one of them anyways.

I'm the kind of weirdo who wants to get this solely because the album covers caught my eye on Apple Music and look, it's become a localized thing rather than just a random thing in their library! But then things that stuck out like that for me include the Lunar games (ads in magazines, along with EGM listing an epilogue[/] in their secrets/cheat section.)

I'll probably grab when convenient on Vita.

Given that it's more of a visual novel, are the battles that all that hard? Can you grind if you want or no since it sort of sounds like there's a set number of battles unless I misunderstand?

I admit I'm not sure when I'll get to this one, but I'm very glad it's here.

Yeah you can grind if you want. Battles are not that bad. There are difficulty settings also for the battles. You can also have the timing / charge based attacks done automatically though you will not get critical hit bonuses if you use the automatic feature.

The one downside with grinding is that you have to use the fast skip to go through all of the event connected with the stage before actually starting the fight. They fixed this issue in the 2nd game as fans complained about it. Which it was stupid as am sure folks will see if they left it as how it was with the JP version lol

---

For those familiar with the first game, battles in this one are much easier for the most part.

WEW. you just saved me some cash probably. Buying them digitally first because regional pricing is great here. Thanks.

I put about 20 hours into the game so far and I've only done 7 or 8 battles. There are two difficulties being normal and hard. Hard adds some more enemies and that's about it. These have taken about 10-15 minutes tops to do as well. You can breeze through them quite nicely. You can replay any battle you've done in a free battle option as well.

Also slightly ups the enemy levels besides as you mention adds a few extra ones.

Is it not really a good idea to start this game without having played the first game or watched the anime then? Because that was my original intention.

I'm glad the battles are easy then. This is the kind of game where I'm happy to cheese through the actual gameplay stuff and chillax with the story.

Yeah, you should watch the anime of the first game before playing this one.

I'm SO READY to see my girl Karura again. Just finished the first game yesterday.
I used the type moon translation so I'm worried I won't be able to adjust to the official names, haha.

Nice OT!

I didn't read the summary and the part regarding the returning characters since I want to go in blind.

I do wonder if the
child of Hakuoro and Yuzuha
will be in this since he wasn't in the anime IIRC.

With this game and his sequel releasing West the number of games I want to see localized is getting lower and lower. We sure came a long way in only a few years regarding Japanese video games localization.

I'd say there's a really, really good chance. 😏
I'm hoping for a Fumiruir appearance myself, haha.

Great! I rather like grinding at times and it gives me time to try out the other characters as you get more. That thing with the story events does sound annoying. Hopefully they correct it here unless it's just a straight port which is what I'd expect. At least it's fixed in the next one.

RPGSite has a major spoiler CG image attached to their review. It's likely only noticeable if you've played or watched the original Utawarerumono though.

Touka is best girl.
Fight me.
?? who would want to fight you ?
Need help comarade ?

if you think about that , then you should play this game and seek the answer as the anime did make things obvious less obvious for many players especially with the changes to numerous events.

Play this game if you want a proper answer

I was pretty excited for the game until I ran into a spoiler on a Gematsu article. Seems like it pretty much ruins this game. Can't believe he didn't bother to put any kind of spoiler warning up.

More people need to buy this so they will translate the sequel. The story is good! And we can debate who is the best waifu together!

Also, Play-Asia shipped my copy earlier today. Well, I hope it was shipped and it's not just a placeholder tracking code.
