I stole a Gameboy Color 17 years ago, and I still feel guilty about it

I was shopping at Marshall's with my mom at the time, and I ventured off to the toy section of the store. This particular toy section was minuscule in size. It consisted of a few rows of shelves in the back corner of the store that spanned across around 4 meters each. I was 9 at the time, and these toys did not interest me at all, but anything was better than shopping for clothes..

That's when I saw it: a purple Gameboy Color. It was just lying on the shelf in front of the yo-yo's and fake nose/mustache. It wasn't in any packaging, it was just sitting on the shelf with a cartridge loaded in the back; the game was Super Mario Land.

I looked around and no body was in the vicinity; there were no kids or adults anywhere in sight. I peeked down a few aisles wondering if anyone was looking for a lost Gameboy, but no body was in sight.

I took the Gameboy.

I took it, put it in my pocket, and ran to my mom like I was running to home base. I was safe. I was ready to shop for clothes.
And I had a new Gameboy Color.

I'm a terrible person. There's a special place in hell for a Gameboy thief.

Do you still have the GBC? What did your mom say when all the sudden you had this GBC that she obviously did not sanction?

I would go and put it back if I were you. Its the only way to prevent threads like this in the future.

Stole a lot of shit from Wal-Mart as a kid. No guilt whatsoever. Still got the Plug-n-Play Genesis in a closet somewhere!

I remember someone left a GBA SP outside on top of a generator and I took it. I didn't really even realize that I had basically stolen it until years later.

I stole once an Game Boy game and gave it to a friend for birthday. I was eight years old. Kids do some stupid things, thats normal.

So that's what happened to my GBC...... my mom was so mad at me for losing it that she refused to replace it.

I had my GBC stolen roughly 16-17 years ago. Only it was green, had a copy of Pokémon Gold in it, and was stolen from me at school.

I want that shit back dammit.

Nah, you were a kid. Also, a terrible person wouldn't feel remorse.

I agree with this. The fact that this still haunts you about to this day shows that you learned a lesson you won't forget. Now if you kept doing it you would be a terrible person.

It's okay, OP. A "friend" of mine stole my copy of Mr. Nutz back in high school and to this day I still want to kick his ass.

Wait, that means what you did is not okay, then. Sorry to break it to you like that.

There are really much worse crimes that stealing a video game system that's just lying around once as a teenager. It's not like it started your life as a criminal or something.

That reminds me of the time 17 years ago when I put my Gameboy down for a minute at Marshalls and somebody stole it. I've still never finished Super Mario Land.

I can't *believe* these lazy developers keep making file sizes so damn large. Btw, how does technology work?
I had my GameBoy Pocket inside the center console in my mom's Camaro when I was eight years old or so. She left the windows up but the T-Tops off in a Southern California K-Mart parking lot (in Oceanside) while we went to shop. We came back to the car, and I go to grab my GB ... and it was gone.

It sounds ridiculous, but I cried pretty much all day. I was upset for weeks. It was mid-summer if I remember correctly, and I didn't get a replacement until that following Christmas.

It sucks. It's awful and brought me a lot of emotional pain. But it was NOT the end of the world. I survived. And I do a much better job of keeping an eye on my much more expensive stuff, now.

You were a kid. You now feel remorse... and evil person would not. Don't do it again. Maybe donate the GB and game to charity?

In middle school a kid stole my copy of Mario & Luigi: Partners in Time so the next day I broke into his locker and stole his DS and a case of games he had. And his Dr. Pepper. And his blackberry phone.

I turned the phone and DS into the lost and found the next day since I felt guilty. Didn't feel guilty enough to give back the games or Dr. Pepper, tho.

My brother stole a copy of Fire Red from a kid he hated and gave it as a gift to me when I was sick. This isn't entirely related but it reminded me of that.

My Gameboy Color was actually stolen 17 years ago. This is an unrelated event as I live in a different country, but I hope that the thief that got mine feels guilty as well.

Pokemon Red
in a
dentist waiting room

I stole Ducktales comic books from 7-11 a few times when I was 6. I was scum.

I used to cut out the characters and put them inside a cardboard, make believe TV like a diorama though and have pretend episodes of Ducktales. That was sweet.

Yo, my Gameboy Advance was stolen as a kid and I just have to say I don't blame you, but also fuck you. But no, I guess that led me to being able to justify asking for the way better SP.

Didn't your mum ask where the gameboy came from?

Yeah, what's up with that? Your mother seemingly not realizing or not being interested in the sudden appearance of a new GBC is what surprises me about this story. I'd have been too much of a coward to take the GBC with me, but if I did my mother sure as heck would have made sure that I returned it immediately.
