Koji Igarashi Kickstarts Bloodstained: Ritual of the Night (2.5D, backdash, 2018)

I actually enjoyd CotM more than SOTN. I know I'll be labelled as heretic but SOTN comes after AoS and CotM for me :D

Edit:
SOTN looks and sounds really good but it was piss easy for me. You can cheese these games but I didn't cheese SOTN and it was still so damn easy. I actually started doing self-imposed challenges because of that.

I would agree with you, AoS is still tops. CotM is pretty close too. If anything, CotM had one of the best castles in the handheld entries with all the hidden rooms and goodies. Hopefully Bloodstained has a ton of hidden secrets like CotM/SotN cause all the other entries don't really come close in that regard.

I could never get into Circle of the Moon. It just felt stiff, and the art never grabbed me.

Does anyone know if Order of Ecclesia is ever coming to Virtual Console?

Thread to the shitter because of boobs and Ahasverus, again...

I'll stick to read the updates directly from email again, I guess.

The problem people have with the design boils down to tight clothes. Nuns CAN'T use tight clothes, even on stupid japanese games.
You're being deliberately obtuse if you think the issue is the big boobs and tight clothes by themselves (also don't forget the sexy librarian glasses and pose, thehilarious high heels, the whatever is she's wearing being really short, and her stupid lingerie piece hanging on her left leg... may I remind you this is supposed to be a Catholic nun? but I digress!)

CotM shits all over Harmony of Dissonance!

Nope, I can't agree with that.

I've tried to replay CotM more than a couple times, but I just can't get over how stiff everything feels. The Igavanias are simply better-playing games. There are valid complaints when it comes to level-design (and music in HoD's case), but I never find myself fighting with the controls while playing them.

No, it doesn't just boil down to tight clothes. People have criticised various other aspects of the costume, art style and accessories. I also said I thought the pieces didn't hang together well as a theme, as if the pieces, while not particularly poor individually, just don't work that well together. There's no need to disregard all criticism of design as just skimpiness/tight clothing etc.

Very true.

Gotta say I didn't really enjoy Harmony of Dissonance. It's the only one of the igavanias that I didn't like. The music/sound was bad and the main character looked ugly with that blue outline on him (made for practical purposes). I also didn't enjoy the whole two dimensions mechanism.

My god... If I could just have one more true castlevania game with 2017 quality hd sprites... The war of 1999 for example with Julius. I made myself sad again goddammit.

Was curious why this thread was getting bumped so much. So I peak in to see that people have spent the last 5 pages (?) arguing about video game boobs? Like, for real?

You might be less incredulous if you read those 5 pages again, carefully. After doing so, ask yourself whether the actual issue being discussed is "video game boobs", or say, trite fan service and bad character design.

Is there any good indie in the vain of Classicvania games, anyway? That always was more my kind of CV.
In addition to the aforementioned Odallus, there is Slain: Back from Hell, which might be up your alley. It's on Steam and PSN.

Amazing how people keep ignoring this and just go "lol boobs". :\ SMH.

Yeah, I mean, I guess we need a central OT to talk about this, but every time I see this thread, I read, "... Bloodstained ... ... ... (2.5D, backdash, delayed)" and have a little second of panic even though 2018 is already far enough away.

While I might agree with you at some extent, it's not like CV timeline is some sacred bastion of cohesion. There are lots of plot holes, lots of premature Dracula resurrections and lots, LOTS of anachronisms. The clock thing was cute but I'm 100% one of the pre Aria games have robots and stuff.

Guy has an eye for details, which is the biggest praise I can give to him (Didn't Curse of Darkness have like 398613298 craftable weapons?). That and his insistence of giving player additional playable characters for free, which are always welcome.

Can't argue in favor of the motorcyle skeletons though.

Worked well enough in Lords of Shadow. We all know he just did it because he wanted his own origin story. which was decent, except for the part he literally firdged every woman in the game. Which brings the argument to the start: Guy is not very good with women.

It was fantastic. Best SOTN clone imo. IGA literally stole its complementary weapon effects system for all his remaining games.

igarashi wasn't producer of lords of shadow

It was a really around decision in both games.

It's funny how he's "not good with women" when you've literally praised multiple female characters in games he's worked on. Lament of Innocence is a revenge story which had to set up both Dracula's origin and the Belmont's reason for hunting him down for generations. If you take it out of context (which of course you did) you can make it sound bad, but for the type of story that it is, it's honestly pretty appropriate and I find it difficult to believe this isn't the case considering you literally praised the story for Lords of Shadow in the same paragraph despite it using the same tropes.

Wow, 2018? Bloody hell how long is it gonna take them to put out this game they said its already halfway there?

What did you expect? The initial suggested release date was always optimistic. It'll be less than three years, for Iga's biggest castle yet, and three playable characters. Games take a long time to make. I'm sure you're aware, but it bears repeating.

Does anyone know if there's going to be a male char?

Not sure if they've confirmed anything, but it's been established that there will be multiple playable characters, at least - of the ones already revealed, Zangetsu seems like a fairly probable candidate. I'd be okay with Dominique, Miriam and him as a playable trio.

Thanks this is the information I was looking for!

He's a safe game designer stuck in a rut of providing fans with game after game of what he thinks they want more of, while the quality dilutes with each release. When he deviates from the formula and makes something different, it tends to suck. When he makes exactly what people want him to, it's still not as good as what was made before. His games are boring and carried entirely by the talents of good artists and musicians he works with, and even that looks like it's tapering off.

But his last Igavania was the best one...

When the hell did they ever say there were halfway done?

Spoiler:
They never said that

Eh, it had the best combat and challenge, but the exploration aspect sucked, and the level design was lacking in a lot of areas.

FWIW, I (and many others) felt the gains the in the first two areas offset any losses in the later two areas overall.

Eh, it had the best combat and challenge, but the exploration aspect sucked, and the level design was lacking in a lot of areas.

It had the best plataforming of any Igavania, too.

I mean, it wasn't the landmark SotN was, but is was an incredible game and the first one of many that actually tried to shake the formula a bit. Is a shame that it stopped there.

Please use the correct terminology:

- Metroidvania: Basically SotN style games, although is used as a catch-all concept for both games like Metroid and SotN
- Igavania: Metroidvanias made by Igarashi
- Roguevania: Fusion between Metroid/SotN and Roguelikes
- Soulsvania: Fusion between Souls mechanics/combat and Metroid/SotN
- Retrovania: Metroidvania with 8-bit graphics
- Isovania: Metroidvania with Isometric perspective
- Inavania: Metroidvania made by Inafune
- Shittyvania: Metroid Other M
- Othervania: Games that aren't Metroidvanias
- Shootervania: Doom, Metroid Prime
- Vanialite: Games which has slight Metroidvanias elements

And the one with the worst story too.

What? no it isn't. If anything it has the best one. The dichotomy between Shania and Altus us great and the villagers all has fairly fleshed out personalities and back stories.

How is it worse than PoR where the "story" consists of throwbacks to a Genesis game nobody played?

I'd say Order of Ecclesia is in the top half of Metroidvanias in the series at the least. I still like SotN best and I'd probably put Aria of Sorrow above it, but everything else falls under.

Has information about this game completely stalled out?

I don't recall when the last update was. It does feel like it has been longer than usual, but I think that's only because they've been very consistent previously. Perhaps they're preparing a new demo for E3.

IGA just did a presentation at Bitsummit over the weekend and showed off the design process and character model for one of the alternate characters, Zangetsu.

Expect to see more press this week as journalists arrive back home from Japan.

They've confirmed Bloodstained will be at E3 in some way. They haven't confirmed anything about a demo but there will be something. We know they're almost done with the japanese voice recordings and last night Iga showed the 3D model of character Zengetsu at BitSummit.

This has been literally the longest we've been without an update since the Kickstarter happened and it hasnt even been 2 months since the last update yet so relax people. We're less than a month from E3, I'm sure we'll hear from them by then.

Zangetsu's ingame model looks awesome will certainly play the game as him once atleast, and even in that roquelike castle/dungeon mode but that mode will probably not come at launch with the game.

I'd actually expect they're going to be pretty quiet until E3.

505's meeting room has a pretty large Bloodstained section in it.
