WipEout for 100%
Just look at and feel it!
Also, there're zone and eliminator modes!
And the music, sooo good!

This....really isn't very close to the sense of speed for F-Zero.

The sense of speed in F-Zero isn't really dangerous. Its like me going 200mph in NFS, a stark difference if I went 200 mph around a track in GT.

Wipeout isn't a simulator but it takes into account inertia. You can't twitch you're way around a track at high speeds, you need to take a racing line and there's even a suspension like mechanic. Just take a look at how wide the tracks are generally in F Zero compared to Wipeout and you'll understand why so so few can play at the highest speeds despite such speeds not being close F-Zero.

To put it simply, its harder to go fast in Wipeout.

What a boring gif of Wipeout in the op. Looks like the first wipeout vs a modern Fzero. Wipeout HD should have at least provided a sea of easy to find gifs for it. I remember so many for it's OT, especially zone gifs.

Sorry about that, i was on mobile while doing this thread, since i never had the intention to favour F-zero by showing off that sweet gif. In my eyes the contest is much closer than on first sight since both games are stellar.

Can someone provide us with some zone wipeout gifs in order to include them in the OP?

WipEout.

But I didn't play F-Zero GX a lot, so what do I know.

I don't get the "floaty controls" criticism, this is what makes WipEout unique and so fing good imho.

More people will say Wipeout because it's on Sony platforms. The truth is F-Zero are ace games, Wipeout is ok to have some fun.

F-Zero GX is the greatest racing game of all time.

Yep.

That game alone elevates F-Zero for me over Wipeout. I really, REALLY want to love Wipeout but no matter how many times I try, I just can't get into it the way I can F-Zero. I just need GX in HD and with Online play. I'm still so mad GX didn't sell well and effectively buried the franchise. :\ I envy Wipeout fans as they get games on every Playstation platform.

F-Zero

The SNES-version might be one of the oldest games I still like to get back to even after all these years.
I never could get into WipeOut because of the controls. They always felt "wobbly".

The only way the world is going to get a better futuristic racer than F-Zero GX is if a new F-Zero is made and even then it's unlikely to surpass GX.

I think it's a difficult one to choose. Personally the three wipEout games on the PS1 are the best anti-gravity racing games made.

However wipEout probably would not have existed without F-Zero being there first on the SNES. The F-Zero series is more pure racing focused, while wipEout also engages with combat, thus make some of the races a little random it makes the races more thrilling.

F-Zero's latest main installment GX completely trashes wipEout Fusion's shitshow though. The wipEout franchise has returned fairly strong though with the PSP games, and HD/Fury following them. But it never goes back to how good the first three games were, the modern design, the music, the tight controls and extremely good anti-gravity feeling and the way you slide into corners. Just amazing.

Should be an HD port with online play....

F-Zero deserves a better owner than Nintendo.

A couple of days ago I got a PS4 (basically just for Final Fantasy...), but I ended up also buying the PS2 Classic Star Ocean 3. It looks incredible, because the emulator outputs in HD.

I'm really hoping that's what Nintendo do with the GCN virtual console. Then you'd have F-Zero GX in HD (and I'd have some Paper Mario!).

Is the Wipeout gif used in the OP indicative of how it generally looks? Cause holy shit that's a sweet ass aesthetic. If it really looks so stylized most of time, then Wipeout hands down, no contest.

Also, why is FastRMX not a part of this battle??

Wipeout is amazing but above phantom speeds, the game sort of shakes itself apart, car handling and weight going out the window. It's just not very fun. At it's highest speeds when you're bashing off walls in order to eek out boosts and are skating the thin edge between max speed in destruction, then and only then does F-Zero surpass Wipeout.

It's amusing to see people criticizing the game based on how it punishes their lack of skill.

Maybe they need to add a Blue Shell so they can still win.

Well WipeOut has a franchise that's actually somewhat alive and releasing games.

On the otherhand, none of those games come close to GX.

Also, why is FastRMX not a part of this battle??

As a racer, it's extremely shallow. For an indie downloadable title made by a small handful of people, it's a great achievement. But it can't stand up to either game.

F Zero ended with an amazing game at least.. Wipeout ended with a crappy Vita get that killed the studio.

Thanks Sony.

seems the contrary to me, FZero because it is nintendo and nintendo know how to make gameplay an others don't (despite being sega the ones behind GX)

I never played GX but the snes game and X were pretty shit honestly. I've loved every wipeout game

i disagree, regarding snes game. I never liked the n64 one.
Snes game was really technic and unrivaled at the time because it used mode 7 very cleverly, something unseen for racers, that were for the most part hang-on lilke clones.

F-Zero is certainly the winner looking at all the replies.
Yet that doesn't surprise me, somehow whipeout feels like a smaller indie game, while f-zero is the real thing.

Incredibly tough as F-Zero has potentially my favourite soundtrack ever and is a load of fun...but Wipeout is probably the game that was most important to me.

That PS1 era with Wipeout at the forefront was the first time in my life (I was maybe 9 when it first came out?) where gaming felt legitimately 'cool' in the UK - with all the marketing that came with it, the futuristic designs of the ship brands, all the artists involved with the soundtrack etc. So it had a massive impact on me growing up.

Love both but because of that, Wipeout edges it.

Its a mix between minimalism and clutter. The art and OST is what really makes Wipeout stand out from the others in the genre.

yep.

related to this, there's a nice article on Metanet Software blog → http://www.metanetsoftware.com/2016/the-designers-republic-vs-idea-magazine-2002

We bought Wipeout 3 way back in 2001, and it was one of the first games that really opened our eyes to what game graphics could be. Just take a look at the powerhouse intro:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YtUPLP9Hndc

Seeing that intro was a formative experience for us — it was so mindblowing we immediately reset the PS1 to watch it again! We must have watched it 20 times in a row that first day, and hundreds more since. Those logos for the F7200 racing league and each of the teams are simple, bold, and distinct, and most of all, restrained. That's a tough combination to create. And the colours are so good! We created a colour scheme in N++ (see screenshot below) called F7200 as an homage to Wipeout 3 and tDR's wonderful sense of colour.

Each animation in that Wipeout 3 intro is full of personality, identifying differences between each team and bringing life to something you didn't even know could HAVE life. This is branding at its finest, and it really embellished the world of Wipeout, which could otherwise have been ordinary. That's a pretty important thing to think about when you're designing games, especially since it allows you to create some fantastic box art and other related marketing materials as well.

Wipeout easily, the designs, tracks, music are all much better than F-Zero.

I can understand people preferring the gameplay of one over the other since despite both being anti grav arcade racers they dont really play the same.

However neither of them can mess with the real king:

This. It's like people who say Driveclub is better than Forza Horizon.

Wipeout vs. Extreme-G is a much closer fight.

Extreme-G gave F-Zero X a run for its money, so that comment sounds significantly less disparaging than you probably intended to lol.

This is really more of a F-Zero GX vs. Wipeout thread, because lets be honest, it's the only truly awesome game in the franchise.

GX is a fantastic game but Wipeout Pure is one of my most played games ever and one of the very best portable racers ever made. Wipeout has a big feather in its cap for releasing a game in the past decade and with the remaster collection actually still being somewhat relevant.

F-f***ing-Zero

The Wipeout series has always felt soulless/designed by committee to me.

I think that's what so many people (including me) like about it, ironically. It's got that weird sterile, hyper-future, mega-corporation-clean aesthetic. It pairs with the pumping electronic sound track so, so well. That's not me arguing, different people like different stuff, just find it interesting :).

Wipeout's branding looks like it was designed by a group of people in turtle necks in a super moody Soho creative agency in the 1990s with weird facial hair and who do coke with the chemical brothers, F-Zero looks like it was designed by a happy, wide-eyed individual who loves comic books and had a very vivid, colourful vision for the future universe. Similar settings/themes but a totally different tone - and I absolutely love both.

Never liked the way wipeout controls while I love how F-Zero does, also besides GX I prefer the music of F-Zero.
Then theres the charisma of its pilots and the comic book aesthetic which I adore.

As a logo designer I do like the team logos of wipeout and the idea to have vehicles done by different teams just like in real f-1.

WipeOut was designed by a dude who wished he could play Mario Kart to techno music, no joke

WipeOut was designed by a dude who wished he could play Mario Kart to techno music, no joke

The idea for Wipeout began in a pub with artist Jim Bowers discussing his concept animation for a high-speed racer with Burcombe, who had just completed Super Mario Kart on its 150cc mode thanks to a little help from some techno music. The regular game music had put too much pressure on Burcombe, especially during the final lap — when its tempo and volume rises. "I just couldn't handle it," he recalls. "I'd lost six or seven races in a row."

Haha yeah, it's really weird that it came out of that concept. You've still got the fast pace, the weapons and racing combined and yet the art style and tone ended up so far from Mario Kart (or F-Zero, despite having so many gameplay similarities).
