Microsoft Studios rebranded to 'MS Studios Global Publishing' ?

That's cool, and especially so on the Crackdown front. Do we know if he's planning on creating any new IPs? Seems like a waste not to give him a studio of his own to at least incubate some ideas.

He's an employee of Microsoft Studios.

Basically he's a super high level employee that is broadly involved with every first party project at some level, either supervising writing or helping out with individual writing for devs without good writing chops.

Complete global publication

He is not a game designer, I don't think it would be a good idea to have him lead a new game let alone studio. He works as a writer for Global publishing which means he works on multiple games they are publishing at one time basically consulting.

Basically the dude from Marvel and DC. Feige and Geoff? I don't know their names.

Well I've always been a fan of his writing. I should check out ReCore. Hope he does something more substantial down the line though, something of his own.

Neither is Amy Henning and a bunch of other talents in the industry. Staten was instrumental to shaping Halo into what it was in its prime as a franchise. I would honestly love to see what else he could come up with. Microsoft could really do with an exclusive RPG franchise akin to Mass Effect, I think he'd be the perfect choice given his history. Or if he wanted to do something more in line with fantasy or grounded in reality - anything. I'd just like for Microsoft to actually exploit the talented people they have to create new IPs internally.

Something like that. Ken Lobb, Casey Hudson and Joe Staten are such examples within MS Studios.

MS Studios in general has more intimate creative supervisors with their externally published games, probably to ensure that all their games have the same level of creative baseline and that no game secretly has some offensive writing content that may be missed out by the publisher.

Not gears, halo, forza or any current MS first party studio game, but they may just be updating the site currently.

Interesting. Also worrying.

Bit of a mouth full that Microsoft always falls into with naming.

Microsoft Interactive Entertainment - MIA

Hahaha.

After fable, scalebound, D4 and various other cancelations I'd be very very nervous to work with a publisher this seemingly fickle and loyal to their 3 core ip, halo gears forza

Not really, this is basically a rebranding exercise to distinctly separate out two parts of MS Studios.

Microsoft Studios = first party studios (343, Coalition, T10, Rare)
MS Global Publishing = first-party games by external studios ( ReCore, etc)

This is basically "second party", basically making a clear distinction what games are made by internal studios and what games aren't.

What, however, annoys me off about the above arrangement is that games under the Halo/Forza/Gears banner like Horizon and Halo Wars are clearly part of their 'franchise studio' banner instead of part of MS Global Publishing.

As Nightengale pointed out, they cover Microsoft's externally developed projects. So no 343, Coalition, Turn 10 or Rare projects.

Anyway, yeah, that logo is horrendous. Someone made a Global Publishing logo and then copy and pasted it onto the bottom of the MS Studios logo.

Well those games are incubated and managed by those studios so it makes total sense to have them under Microsofts studios, think of them as outsourcing studios for projects they wouldn't otherwise be able to develop internally.

That being said, this does also exclude franchise games which they're treating as a a collaboration between the franchise studios and the external devs that make spin-offs like Forza Horizon & Halo Wars, so bleh.

I agree it makes no functional difference in the end, but the OCD in me is annoyed.

Because it was perfect to have a two identity split-off, but now there's technically 3.

MS Studios = internal franchise studios
MS Studios - Ex Dev = franchise games from external developers
MS Studios - Global Publishing = games not part of franchise studios from ex.devs

Ah.

So I suppose they will use the default MS Studios logo for First Party Studio games. It does make me wonder why they haven't used a new website instead of the default MS Studios one.

I get the logo even though it's bad but I like the re-brand. It's a positive move.

Sony's Worldwide Studios has some gravitas these days. This is an opportunity for Microsoft to get to that point. If Spencer is really investing in first-party content this is a bold first step that shows Microsoft can harvest content creators around the world.

I like this ambition.

EDIT: or not (from reading other posts). Damn.

I'm curious if their Japan trip involved getting into whatever Sakaguchi is up to with Silicon Studio (which is prob a console title, based on their recruitment drive).

It could also be a reporting thing. The studio heads of 343i, Coalition, Mojang, and Turn 10 report directly to Spencer. Rare might too, I'm not positive on that one.

The rest of MS studios report to Shanon Loftis at this point.

I wonder what the intent behind this rebrand actually is?

Phil has recently done a tour of the global studios offices within the last few weeks and he has been quoted in the last few months saying

"[We're] very focused on 1P games. I'll be careful about when we announce things but I know strong 1P is critical," adding that having those first-party games ready for Scorpio's launch is also critical.

"It's a journey. Started w/ focus on hardware, longest timelines. We've rebuilt XBL and OS. Bringing same focus to 1P,"

E3 could be pretty interesting.....

I know theyre a mega corporation but I feel sorry for MS at this point, they dont have a clue. I can just imagine Phil Spencer putting out fires everywhere...for every problem he fixes, someone else makes a stupid logo, or antagonises a developer. I have a funny feeling they are in for a bad E3.

Oh and "global publishing"...no gamer gives a shit about publishing, or globalness, we just want the games. It's a Microsoft Game? Call it Microsoft Studios then. Or MSA Microsoft Studios America, or Microsoft Worldwide Studios. We dont need the word publishing..we get it, you publish them. It's as moronic as MGIB Microsoft Games In Boxes.

That's presumably because Turn 10 and 343, respectively, supervise those projects, not Microsoft's external dev team.

I thought she was more story than game design, did I get that wrong?

Yes, she started out as a game designer and then branched into writing.

You seem genuinely antagonised by this, why give a flying duck?

The logo could be a duck farting out fireworks for all I care, just bring great games and a variety of them. It's all I ask of any first party.

MS is NOT doing this for YOU, lol
Did you rage about the Sony Interactive rebrand, too?

Looks like one of those online generated logos I used for my very low budget clients. You can do it better, MS...

LOL.

Anyway...bad logo, but really don't care. Just bring a good E3.

No shit, but did they not offer her enough, or was she too expensive? I missed the whole debacle with her leaving Sony for EA.

My understanding was creative differences. She wrote Uncharted 1-3, but after Druckman did last of us, they saw that as a good reference to re-look into how to write uncharted. That's why there was some actor, and some of the mocap along with AMy's draft got scrapped and bruce and druckman wrote uncharted 4.
