[EDIT: Double post - apologies]

I think with the threat level as high as it is, the security forces are bound to jump on more things than usual.

This is a full team of 7 plain clothed, armed Police in unmarked cars with a further 4 police vans and 10 regular police officers. This is not a regular arrest, it has to be someone they are aware of. There is no way a town like mine has these kind of resources to just take someone down as a precaution from someone dialling it in. A certain level of intel has to be involved.

Gaf Wiganers, assemble! (I was born there but now live down south)

No way! :D

Went to Highfield C of E Primary school for a couple of years back in the 90s before moving down south. Born in Billinge Hospital, which I understand is now a cinema complex?

edit: realise this is totally off-topic, apologies for all non-Wiganers out there reading this

DUDE! I am a Billinge hospital baby as well. I went to St James' and St Peters' in Orrell.

The hospital is now a housing estate.

Anyway ... SHIT IS GOING DOWN OUTSIDE MY HOUSE !! - I am sure it will turn out to be nothing.

BBC said:
A Muslim community worker, who did not want to be identified, has told the BBC that two people, who knew Abedi at college, made separate calls to a hotline to warn the police about his extremist views.

He said they had been worried that Abedi was "supporting terrorism" and had expressed the view that "being a suicide bomber was ok".

The friends had argued with him, telling him he was wrong but had become so concerned they contacted the police, the community worker said.

A suspect has been arrested in Wigan in connection with the Manchester suicide bomb attack, Greater Manchester police say.

I appreciate the police and security forces stepping up police/army presence around sporting events and concerts etc, but what really worries me, with the summer rapidly approaching, is all the music festivals etc. They are so densely populated, it is scary to think what impact a coordinated attack on one might have. I haven't been to one in cheers - what has the police presence been like in recent times?

Wasthe suicide bomber actually at the show or was it in the foyer area ? Either way he must have had a ticket right ?

When i saw machine head last year (different venue) they patted everyone down and had everyone go through metal detectors. Does manchester arena not have a similar process?

Yep, we see this time and time again.

"lessons will be learned"

no the foyer area is just a big door connected to the trainstation that anyone can get to then there's the big main doors that lead into the area that you need a ticket for.

Last time I went in the arena I don't remember metal detectors being there.

according to people security is more concerned about checking for water bottles anyway.

And yet people will still claim that the Muslims of Manchester didn't do enough here.

When we heard he was known to the police, I wondered if that news came from people who went to his mosque or others from his Muslim community.

These stories tend to get buried though.

Typical. He was handed to police and they did nothing.

What can they do?

They check these people out. If they don't find evidence of anything, they will monitor them, but they can't monitor them indefinitely.

It's because the part of the arena where this happened is conjoined with Victoria Train Station so you can't segregate it for those with tickets. The area is a thoroughfare to the main road as well, with a McDonalds that anyone can access.

Yeah it's just not practical at all in many places. Even if you could put in some sort of checkpoint you are just moving the problem further back.

Reuters:

Suspect's dad has been arrested in Tripoli. The younger son, who was arrested earlier in Tripoli, was thought by authorities there to be planning an attack. Here's a pic of him, you know, holding an LMG.

Same thing happened with the Boston Marathon bombers. Russia even warned us.

All that data they collect is only useful for post-incident investigations.

Problem is alot of people dont see it that way n the alt right etc use that notion n people start swinging to believing those groups.

I dont have an answer but there has to be a middle ground somewhere that sometimes the intel is enough to move on target but that target does damage

To clarify, it was thought that the brother would be planning an attack in Tripoli. With the father being arrested too, this family sounds kinda fucked up. Wonder if they were radicalised before or after returning to Libya.

Excellent example thank you. That could be the follow up to the DaVinci Code, the Morrissey Code. He says it without saying it outright.

But to answer your question, I'm sure that there are a huge amount of muslims who are scared to death to say anything too. Their faith has been very clear about what happens if you say the wrong thing. Sort of like a really hardcore version of what you're doing.

What are you saying? Theres muslim enforcers roaming the streets giving all the stare to stay quite or they'll get them? People are being muzzeled so the community can carry out crime and terror? Regardless of your warped ideas this isn't a reply to my post, your ignoring the fact that your attempt to position all Muslims as implicit falls apart when it's Muslims that have suffered tremendously as well. I don't want to disrespect or take attention away from the victims so will save this for another thread.

This is just bizzare. And his Dad's been arrested too? What is going on with that family

At least we know now that the parents had something to do with the radicalization of these kids. Not shocking, but quite sad.

Where in what he wrote are you seeing that? People will not say this is a muslim problem, as in they do not associate this with the faith. Sort of like saying pedophile priests aren't a catholic problem
As I said in my post, Sadiq Khan, who Morrissey called out by name, has asked the Muslim community to help in rooting out extremists.

I could engage with you more but you're literally ignoring the real world. People are saying the terrorist is a Muslim, people always do, you're just ignoring them and shouting about how nobody thinks its Muslims. So... I don't really think it's worth it.

The only thing I'd say is that authorities in Libya are quicker to jump to conclusions or force confessions than our forces would be so take that with a pinch of salt.

Although, you know the image of him holding an LMG in a car park isn't a great look.

True enough. Especially since the country is still split down the middle, so the government in Tripoli may be trying to act quickly as a means of currying favour for future support.

Also, you wouldn't want to be in a Libyan prison, torture is common so yeah im a little sceptical of the authorities claims.

These leaks show the lack of respect America has for the UK. So much for our specials relationship.

Yeah the US security services need to plug this leak asap. US media should also be ashamed of themselves. So much for being an ally. No shame whatsoever chasing views at the potential expense of more lives lost down the line.
