Far Cry 5 keyart revealed

Did anyone here play Battlefield Hardline? Since some are interested in the portrayal of the far right in games, that game actually does it. One of the villain groups is basically a bunch of tea party-esque separatists. Complete with racism.
Also, the leaders daughter is in a relationship with one of the leads of the game and he's black.
I remember it pissing off quite a few people as one of the missions that takes place with the group was the first demo shown online.

The problem with that game is that it also casually normalizes militarized police and brutality and came out at a very bad time for that. It's pretty tone deaf.

Don't see an issue with whatever game they want to make. They have the right to their views in making or saying whatever they want, even if it hurts some people's feelings.

Just as the the other side has the right to say what they want, even if it hurts the liferal's feelings. The door swings both ways.

I am pretty excited about the idea they have as it hasn't been done that often and it brings a fresh feeling to a video game. That's right it is just a video game.

I wonder if this'll be another game where the antagonist is actually the least shitty faction like FC4.

If that is the tone you got from it Hardlines campaign, me and you played a different game.

Yep. The Division conveyed a far-right ideology too. If you're going to analyze a game's portrayal of the far-right, don't just read the script : game design is key in video games and it conveys ideology too.

The more I hear about this, the more intrigued I am especially after recently beating the ok, but flawed Far Cry Primal.

And I must say: they did a bang-up job with the character design of the dude in the center. Every time I see that image I just want to punch him so much. They really got the Richard Spencer look down perfectly with him.

Plot twist, you play as the cult leader

Totally. Violence and conquering territories are part and parcel of open-world games, so any open-world game is inevitably going to convey an imperialist worldview, even if you're fighting racists or cults or dictators or what-have-you. A game like that will always be imperialist in nature unless they do away with those mechanics and systems.

You climb a tower, the map is revealed and icons are added. All things for the player to conquer and express dominance over. It's a land grab.

I know this was going to be controversial but I wonder if these same people who want to boycott this game watches shows like The leftovers or anything media based that has middle America religious cults killing people? Shit, horror movies has had this tiny for years? And I'm almost certain that a white guys is probably the main character. I mean, we play games constantly killing other groups of people in their country but this is too far for some and apart of some liberal fascism? Are they serious? 💀💀💀

First FC doesn't even fit the franchise anymore. Start with 2 if you want to see the rough, proto-Far Cry. It's incredibly interesting to see them testing out things out in what was a big budget title. 3 is the first time they settle into what the series is now.
Thanks, I'll probably do just that

I think Ubisoft might have a winner on their hands, if this lives up to the potential.

I mean, this is just a thread on KEY ART. Imagine when we get gameplay.

Hopefully it will be a thread where people are pretty into what was shown, and a lot of thought was put into new gameplay systems, etc.

In reality it will probably be a lot of disappointed people with "towers lul" drivebys

I don't know how I feel about this. Suspension of disbelief and all but the setting is just so bizarre. Do they just cut all communication to the rest of the country and no one realizes what's happening? Pretty much every game in the series has taken place in secluded islands or small portions of third-world countries while this is friggin' America lmao. Ianno, just hard to swallow that the rest of the country is none the wiser, especially considering it's the USA.

I'll still buy and play it because the theme sounds great and I love the series. Hopefully the story is good.

I also want to ask how long a game like this would be in production? Like I'm assuming this started before Trump announced he would be running for president since I feel like it takes 3 years or so to make the average AAA game but of course with Ubisoft which has thousands of studios and multiple employees I can't be too sure.

Not that this game is directly related to Trump but I feel like fall 2015 was when the rumblings of where we are now began, when the campaign trail kicked off.

Why stop there? Players also dominate the options in a pause menu and command consoles to do their will.

If Telltale was making it.

They did hire some TellTale writers recently come to think of it.

Sounds more like a CRPG to me.

I agree this happening on US soil seems weird, because like you said if this is a "secret cult" them getting away with what was shown in the teasers and this art is pretty unlikely unless the rest of the US is intentionally casting a blind eye to whats going on, or this is satirical lala land USA like GTA.

I dunno if its going to be ingrained in reality or fantasy with underlying truths, the Trump Adminstration is now part of Assassins Creed canon so who knows what they will do to explain why this is occuring in Far Cry.

Honestly, while I understand the desire here for a minority protag, I really hope this game uses Generic Straight White Male Protagonist #4956-32B. I think the former would just help feed into the alt-right's narrative that this is some "us vs. them" fight between """"""""Real America"""""""" and the evil minorities, while the latter would really sell the idea that these crazy right-wing fucks are a danger regardless of who you are.

I would like to say the game was probably starting development in 2014 (so maybe 3 years) when FC4 finished, with a team breaking of to do this, while another broke of to do primal ala how AC used to be developed before Unity shit the bed.

But it's definitly not "one year" like some would believe.

I think Trump being elected was just a coincidence, because them mobilizing all this within the span of a few months seems unlikely.

a first person shooter where you are fighting religious/nationalist zealots? Bioshock Infinite took 5 years but they made everything from scratch.

they are setting this in one of the most rural states in the US, they can probably use all the trees/foliage/woodlands/dirt roads/shanty towns assets and textures straight from their older games. if it plays and looks identical to FC3/4 but with Americana branding instead of the fake exotic virtual colonialism they peddled in previously, it probably wouldn't take long for a company used to pumping these out.

Love 3 & 4, actually 2 as well come to think of it.
Feel like ubi have been killing it lately and they really have it down to an artform making various atmospheres come to life like they do. Can't wait to see what they do with this setting, and what other QOL improvements and gameplay loop stuff ends up changing this time around.

There are more people at the table since this art is aping the "Last Supper". But boxart constraints probably cut them out.

Yeah as mentioned before I have a feeling that the long haired bearded man on the right is going to be this Far Cry's redneck friend as he appears to be where judas would be sitting.

Where do I sign up to tear down the DON'T TREAD ON ME flags?

One time I went to this music venue where they had one of those flags hanging right next to one that was a US flag with the stars replaced with corporate logos and said "United Corporations of America" and I was like "they have to not know what at least one of those means right" unless they were joking which they probably weren't.
