The greatest anime ever. Follows the story of a man going through a mini-midlife crisis who decides to follow his childhood dream of becoming an astronaut who goes to Mars. The story is wonderfully told and full of characters with real personality. None of that falling down and grabbing boobs shit.

I love One Punch Man but episode 2 has that mosquito villain moaning and talking about how she wants to suck you as her nipples poke conspicuously through her suit.

Here's a great anime with no fanservice at all, except a few shots for the ladies: Sakamoto Desu ga. I've shown it to three people, two of which don't watch anime, and they all loved it. The core of the show is usually a dramatic or not-so-dramatic problem building up and up until Sakamoto finally does something silly and unexpected to resolve it that would normally look really dumb, but comes off as hilarious and cool. It's a very fun watch both for the comedy and to see the rest of the cast interact with and learn from Sakamoto, who is himself a lovable character. No need for 4 episodes to judge whether you'll like it or not--give it 10 minutes and you'll love it.

Planetes - a HARD scifi about debris collectors in space, taking place in the near future where travel has advanced far enough to allow a colony on the moon. Goes deep into the politics of space travel as a privilege for rich nations. Quiet and thought-provoking, it has a pretty powerful ending that feels well-earned. It also has a pretty great dub.

I'm pretty sure Gate has a good amount of fanservice...

Lot of good suggestions in here already though, like Hunter X Hunter and Ippo:

Why? Zero is literally the prequel to Stay Night.

The original stay night anime is terribad and Unlimited Blade Works is not nearly as good as Zero. TBH if you don't want to read the original visual novel then Fate/ Zero is the best the IP has to offer, and I say that as a pretty big Fate fan.

Also my vote goes to Ping Pong. It's an amazing show with an even more amazing OST.

I know the vita crowd keeps going about life and home town. But is plot now a code word for ass or something? Because these Yamato recommendations, they are on point.

lmao, so true

Having watched Yamato recently: top-tier space-opera, but goddamn do the producers love asses.

This is one of the few shows I enjoy watching once every few years. Really dig it.

I think the problem is that there is soooooo much good tv out there right now it's hard to tell what anime is worth making time for. A lot of stuff turns me off with "fan service" when I have to work on it. Stuff that is smart surely exists, but I also haven't caught up with Better Call Saul or Fargo.

Haikyuu is one of the best anime that has been released in the last 10-15 years. Superb characters, soundtrack and story. I love everything about it.

I've really fallen in love with My Hero Academia as well.

Totally backing up the Legend of the Galactic Heroes posts.

Ginga Nagareboshi Gin (1986)

It's an anime about a bunch of wild dogs fighting bears, it takes about five episodes to kick off but I've loved ever since I was a kid. If you don't mind dated animation, it's a fun adventure. It's kinda violent though.

Avoid the sequel, Ginga Densetsu Weed. At least, as far as the anime is concerned. It's so trashy it made the 80s show look like it had better animation. :p

Both of these are dope. Kaiji is such a good watch if you enjoy psychological/outsmarting people at games anime. Monster is purely psychological.

Black Lagoon, a show about a Japanese salaryman that ends up working for a mercenary company in fictional crime infested town in Thailand. Very violent and certain arcs can get quite disturbing. It is one of the few shows that has an excellent english dub.

Most anime has great english dubbing. It's really annoying to see people still act like we are in the 90ies era of bad dubs.

That said i watched black lagoon a few years ago and it was indeed excellent.

A lot of the best ones have already been mentioned, so I'll just throw in Parasyte.

Edit: also little witch academia. It's a pretty nice change of pace from all of the action-y killing stuff I normally watch, and with some freakin' dope animation.

Yep can totally agree Black Lagoon is awesome. Anime dubs nowadays have greatly improved, I still prefer the japanese, but their good enough for me to go back to check out the differences in the performances.

That said, if you want a show with tiddy and plot, I recommend Miss Kobayashi's Dragon Maid, that was great watch.

Also just because I'm in the middle of watching it, I'll recommend ShiroBako, a show about life in the Anime Industry.

Mentioning Gate of all things in OP makes this thread seem like a joke but a lot of great suggestions here.
Gate sounds like what happens when you cross a nationalist military thing with Fantasy. I'm morbidly curious to watch a little but expect it to be off putting.

It's really bad. I couldn't stand the incredibly obnoxious propaganda about how great and noble/selfless the Japanese people are, especially their defense force, while the rest of the world are horrible, greedy people in our reality and in the fantasy land.

Yo, 91 Days is fucking Godlike. This is the type of mafia story that we never knew we needed.

There's also journeyman type of anime like Mushishi as mentioned earlier and Kino's Journey. I guess you could throw in Wolf's Rain as well. The destination does not matter.

MY MAN.

Space Brothers is so good. The story, the characters, the music, it's all so memorable. It also has one of my favorite OPs of all time. And man... the show is legitimately inspiring. It makes you want to try harder.

I frequently (mostly jokingly) say 'I hate anime' when talking to my friends, but Space Brothers is fantastic.

No Dragon Ball? IT HAS THE BEST PLOT! :O

Not 100% sex jokes free, but for the most part people spend their time either making dumb decisions or punching people who make bad decisions. So yeah, that.
