You can finish all currently available story quests, but due to its sandbox design, endgame means different things to everyone. It's not the kind of game you finish just like that. But there is absolutely things to do besides PVP. I don't do it myself either.
You could definitely set a goal for yourself, but eh, not really.

Like if your goal is the make the best, fastest ship (which isn't like in other MMOs where you just do it easily), then you can 'beat it'. If you goal is the make a top tier horse with the perfect skills, then yeah, you can 'beat it'.

But it's a constantly evolving world.

Ah ok thank you. I was wondering if it had like a main story quest that culminated in something like a boss fight or final dungeon and then the end credits. Like Guild Wars 2.

Well, 5E is dirt cheap so I'm gonna check it out :) My only fear is it will run like shit on my ancient i5-3470 :)

I'm running the game on my:

i7 930 @3.36Ghz
12GB Ram
GTX 660Ti 2GB.

Windowmode
1600x900
Texture: medium
Gfx Quality: Very High
All settings active but snow effect.

and i get ~ 30fps at best (lower in cities), If I'd turn off "High-End Mode" I'd get way higher fps but IMHO it would make the game look way worse.

How would this run on a 2500k+280x? Also is this game casual friendly??

Fine. I have a 770 and 2500k and it ran well enough. Not perfect, but more than playable.

And it depends what you want to do. If you play it like a traditional MMO, where you have to be the best at combat (PVP), then it's horribly unfriendly.

If you just want to mess with the systems and carve out your own character and niche in the world, it's more than casual friendly.

It's a fun game if you play it casually and just want to explore, play around with the different life skills (fishing, trading, hunting, horse training, etc.), and learn some satisfying combat. I wouldn't recommend it if you want to be competitive - it's an endless grind with a weapon/armor upgrade system designed by sadists.

Thanks! Might consider it.

How is the economy? Is it possible to become something like a merchant/trader by buying stuff for cheap in some places and then for higher in others?

50GB? Goddamn do I need a bigger hard drive...

These discounts are steep. Is the Explorer's Pack worth it?

Yep. The economy of the game is probably my favorite part.

Like, an example. You can transport goods from one town to another and make a profit. You start with a donkey. Slow, limited, but eh, it does the job. Then you can either buy a carriage and horses from the player-run marketplace or build one and tame your own horses. Then you can transport more goods quicker. Then you can upgrade your carriage to transport MORE goods by either building it or buying one with your profits. Then you can upgrade your wheels to go faster or expand the inventory space. Again, by buying or building the items required.

You can see how if you want to be a trader you can become a badass trader who does nothing but trade all day err day. But you might be a BETTER trader if you dabble in the city building system so that you can build your own workshops to make better and better carriage components. And then you might want to invest in things to CUSTOMIZE your carriage so you stand out. There are other traders you see on a daily basis and can tell who they are by their carriage, paint, and accessories.

I dunno, I love the economy of this game.

Can you be a legit trader during the day but then do shady stuff on the side to undercut/sabotage/assassinate other traders? Does the game support that level of role-play?

I do not know if they changed these systems as I haven't played in a little while, but I do know that yes, you can attack and destroy carriages, and yes, you can trade illegal goods (although I'm unaware of the consequences of illegal trading, I just know it's there).

But in terms of directly sabotaging other traders, the only thing I can think of that isn't just straight up killing them or destroying their carriage is flooding the market so that they can't take advantage of that route, but there's nothing stopping them from changing routes.

Tzanks, thats good to hear.

First Mmo since.... Ff14 two years ago. And I guess they are pretty different.

I play this entirely with the Steam Controller (and steam controller API), and it works very well. If you use a controller (normal) you can still do the activators to have so many buttons that it doesn't matter if you're using a steam controller.

Edit: Oh my gosh, the explorer's package for the steam version is so much better than the one I got near their year anniversary deal... :( Feels bad man.

2x Value Packs (30 Days):
Value Pack gives the following benefits when used until expired: Inventory expansion +16 slots, Storage expansion

+16 slots, Combat/Skill/Life/Horse EXP +10%, Distant Node Investment, Max Weight Limit +100LT, 30% bonus to the Marketplaces sales collection amount, unlimited use of Merv's Palette, unlimited use of Beauty Salon.

10x Elion's Blessing:
Use Elion's Blessing upon death to revive immediately with 100% HP & MP.

1x Tier 5 Horse:
Using this Horse Emblem after purchasing this package will unlock a Tier 5 horse. Using horses to travel throughout the world of Black Desert Online will help greatly in moving from place to place more quickly.

1x Pet of Choice:
Pick a pet of your choice and start your journey together. Pets will auto-loot the drops from monsters and each pet has a unique talent that will help you through your journey.

2x Character Slot Expansion Coupons:
Use the Character Slot Expansion Coupon to add 2 additional character slots which increases your maximum number of characters you can have in your account.

1x Inventory Slot +16 Expansion Coupon:
Use the Inventory Slot Coupon to increase your maximum inventory slots by an additional 16 slots.

1x Horse Flute (Permanent)
Horse Flutes are used to call your horse to your location. When used, your horse will immediately respond by moving to your location. Horse Flute works when your horse is within 500m distance from your location.

5x Housing Decoration Coupons:
Each coupon can be used to redeem a housing decoration item. Pick the decoration item to your liking and style your house the way you want. Decoration items also give your house Interior Points to compete with other players. Having a high ranked Interior Point house allows you to use Investment Banking. Additionally, some decoration items also give various buffs to enhance gameplay.

1x Silver Embroidered Life Clothes Exchange Coupon:
This clothing armor has special characteristics that enhance the experience of life-skill gameplay in various ways.

The pack I got was

The only thing I expect to use of the remaining items are the Value Packages. :\ The horse that came in the General Items was rank 3.

Game is fun for what it cost, but I never stay invested in it for too long because :

- leveling is all about killing trash
- close to no gear progression ( visually )

What's a good class for exclusively-solo play?

I tend to prefer either the quickest or tankiest melee classes, and shy away from magic-based classes... but combat in this game seems to be really fast-paced, even for magic users. Any recommendations?

This is a chart displaying the kill to death ratio of every class (minus Striker). Higher is better. Should help you come to a conclusion.

The samurai would be good for speed. This game is a ARPG game, think of it like third person Diablo 3. Mobility is key for fast farming, then you need AOE. Tamer has good mobility and AOE (pet class), but single target isn't good from what I remember. The Samurai classes have good single target and AOE depending on which gender version you pick. Musa (male) better for aoe, Maewha (female) has better single target.

Musa solo farming https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UCDok3QFhlc

Tamer good vid (elusive, pet grabs aggro) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_y4-7RK3NLg
The downside of Tamer is that she's apparently not as good endgame outside of solo farming because of single target use.

I think I'll try a tamer. They look like a fun class to play. I really liked playing a Hunter in WoW a few years ago, and this looks even better. I won't worry about end-game, since I probably won't ever get there. I don't tend to stick around with MMOs for that long. But if I ever do, I'll see how I cross that bridge then.

By the way, how is the gamepad support for this game? It seems I'd really enjoy playing the combat part of the game with a pad, and the rest of the UI with a mouse and keyboard.

That tamer video looks pretty cool, I might try out a tamer once the game is downloaded and installed.

I remember seeing this last year, and I meant to pick it up... and forgot. I'm currently downloading it since the price is low enough to take a risk on.

You guys are selling me on this. Is there lore and stuff to learn and read about towns and talking with NPCs? Also how big are towns and cities?

There is so much lore, you can drown in it. Every piece of lore in the game has an associated Knowledge unlock which you can keep track of. Topography, Ecology, History, Geography, Relationships, Bestiary, etc.

For funsies, you get Energy when you complete knowledge groups, so you are heavily rewarded for going out and learning. You also gain access to secret shops and vendors and exclusive new lore, knowledge and access that you can only get via knowledge and amity.

Can you be a legit trader during the day but then do shady stuff on the side to undercut/sabotage/assassinate other traders? Does the game support that level of role-play?

I do high level trading, and you can absolutely screw over other players, in secret or in the open. You can attack traders going between cities and towns. You can undercut people in the markeplace. You can buyout stock at vendors and beat other traders to limit trade outlets in each city. That's just at a mechanical level. You can roleplay the ever loving shit out of the whole thing to any depth you want. There's a big community and for that kinda thing.

Hell, you can attack trade boats and plunder other player's trade goods and fishing stock too because why not.

I only play the game with gamepad (steam controller API, though I use a steam controller every thing I do can be used with a regular DS4 or Xbox controller).

I'll try it with my Steam Controller. Thanks for the suggestion!

On the other hand... The game makes me choose a unique family name. But then it doesn't let me choose whatever first name I want!? That is a broken-ass system. If "Smith" is my unique family name, why can't I be "John Smith" if there's not going to be any other John Smith out there?

Even worse... why doesn't this game use account-level ID instead of per-character ID? Blizzard does it with Diablo 3 and it works just fine. Ugh.

Now I have to think of another name I like that isn't taken...

Edit: After tinkering with this game for little under two hours, I decided to refund it. It's just no for me. The combat is OK, but the game itself is an attack on the senses. More especifically, on my eyesight. Everything is so fucking crowded. The menus, the UI, the attack effects, the enemies. Everything is a visual nightmare! I don't see myself playing this game for more than a couple of hours. I'll stick with singleplayer RPGs.

i play ffxiv. only mmo i liked and ever finished. will i like this gaf?

This game is like, totally the opposite of what FFXIV is, as an MMO.

FFXIV is a story driven instance focused game. Black Desert is an open seamless sandbox game, that is more about role playing that following the barebones story.

Ah man, this combat looks and feels so damn slick. Shame that the UI is a mess though. Who thought that having the hp/mp bar below your name was a good idea? In the heat of combat I still can't see the enemy's hp bar as it's position is so close to the player's bars. Luckily I can turn it off.

wait this game has a dark knight class and it looks totally badass...I played the beta and the game really intrigued me...guess I should give it another go now.
