ARMS Global Testpunch Thread: Let's see if this has LEGS

So volley ball and 3 way fights suck. 2 v 2 is weird and probably doesn't need the stupid leg chain.

1 v 1 seems alright though. Add more characters and arms and I can see it being great.

Still don't understand why so many punches go straight pass an opponent who is standing still, or land very close. Makes me wish I had a reticle to choose where they land. Too often my opponent wouldn't block dodge or jump, yet my punch would just land in front of them or just barely touch and not register.
I could never figure out what made punches go too far or not far enough.

Back to the labs tomorrow

The arms only have a certain reach, with each one differing. It was more apparent in the staircase level.

How do you do Min Min's kick move? I saw other players kicking my punches out of the air and I think I saw something about it in the tutorial but I can't remember what it was.

It was cool, then it frustrated me to the point that it was uncool. Then it was cool again, and right after that I began to prioritize dashes and jumps. At this point I just wish I could play it again. I'd pay 40 but not 60.

Damn guys, I'm already feeling the itch.

I wasn't even planning on it, but I might wake up early to catch the 5 am testpuch.

Helix is everything I wanted him to be as a character and so help me god I'm gonna learn to main him. I'm gonna main him like I mained the fuck outta Voldo in Soul Caliber.

Oh my god... 25 new pages, this thread exploded after the testpunch, eh?

Can someone please summarize what gaf thinks about this game?

From what I skimmed, most people had to get acclimated to the motion controls, then had a blast.

Speaking in general though. You're bound to find varying takes if you browse through the posts.

I find it surprising that some people held the joycons the wrong way...they have litterally shown and talked about the thumbs up control in every video, and they even have a visual card before playing <_<

Skimmed but couldn't find anything: how are the non-motion controls? Equally playable on controller or no?

I saw just one post burried somewhere that said the developers underplayed how supposedly well traditional controls function for the game. It was just one post though. It seems like most people were quick to embrace motion controls for the game. Kinda surprising given how much stigma motion controls typically get.

Didn't even realize you could see matches in progress in the lobby till I watched that. Awesome.
...you can? How?

I preferred the traditional controls. You can do all the same stuff, and you have greater control over the outcome. The motion controls work well enough, and you can certainly be capable with them, but I don't see why anyone would prefer them other than sheer kitsch. Motion controls mistook my trying to move for a punch numerous times, but the game never had a problem knowing which button I pressed.

I was ready to embrace motion controls. Then I actually played the game and found put how much worse they are than the button controls. I'm not touching the motion controls again. Far too often would the game not register what I actually wanted. It was so clunky. Not moving the way I want. Not grabbing when I wanted. Grabbing when I didn't want to. Hated it. Analog stick and buttons are so much more reliable for this game.

Did you hold the joy cons correctly?

If you held them like this:

...you did it wrong. I didn't have a problem with anything you described.

I felt the exact same as him. And yes, I was holding them right, lol.

For peeps that like motion controls, great. That's why there are options.

but I have no idea why anyone would prefer motion controls long term.

I was genuinely asking, it wasn't a sarcastic remark or anything.

I just think motion controls are fun and I'm not that concerned about how good I am at the game.

That said I think traditional controls will be more popular here than in Splatoon. Splatoon is mostly traditional in the first place, with motion only for small adjustments. ARMS is asking way more and that means more ways to fuck up.

Awesome experience last night. Loved the Testpunch. 1v1 is the most comfortable mode for fighting but the 2v2 and the free for all were a blast. Chaotic madness.

Played with Springman, Min Min, Ninjara and Ribbon Girl. Ninjara's dodge and feint are fast but Min Min stole my heart. ❤️

Side note: Online works flawlessly. So smooth! I'm genuinely happy I'm saying this on a Nintendo game. Warming-up while waiting for the next match & watching real-time updates of other battles in the lobby is brilliant. Any Gaffer in my lobby early this morning (EU)?

They advertised it as the best way to play, which is why people are trying it :p

But yea there is no reason to use them if you want to be competitive, even if they worked perfectly you still have to intentionally be slow to move/guard.

how's the control on a regular pad ?

Pretty alright, but should still give button mapping. A/B really need to be swapped with x/y, the buttons are too far away from the right stick for multiplayer modes.

If Nintendo allows button re-mapping for the Pro Controller at the full game's launch or via an update, I'll definitely give standard controls a shot. Otherwise, I'm sticking with the joy cons.
